New dramatic footage of Chile Puyehue volcano eruption

The cloud of ash spewing from a volcano in Chile grounded more flights on Tuesday in South America, forcing Peru's president-elect to cross a river by boat and threatening to delay the start of the continent's football championship. The schedule of next month's Copa America could be altered if the ash cloud from Chile's Cordon Caulle volcano keeps grounding flights, Argentine Football Association President Julio Grondona said. Earth Changes - New Ice Age -Chile's Puyehue volcano - Darude

Chile's Puyehue volcano - Volcanic Cycles Begin Ice Ages - Watch Up People ;o) Three million underwater volcanoes . 9 Jul 07 - Researchers have counted 201055 underwater cones, 10 times more than have been found before, and estimate that in total there could be about 3 million submarine volcanoes, 39000 of which rise more than 1000 meters over the sea bed. "The distribution of underwater volcanoes tells us something about what is happening in the centre of the Earth," says John Hillier of the University of Cambridge in the UK. That is because they give information about the flows of hot rock in the mantle beneath. Since the late 1960s, research vessels have been criss-crossing the oceans using sonar instruments to measure the depth of the ocean floor. They have generated 40 million kilometres of linear profiles showing the topography of the ocean bed between 60E° North ---- the latitude of southern Alaska ---- and 60E° South ---- corresponding to the tip of Patagonia. But until now, no one had been able to sift through them all. So, Hillier and a colleague designed a computer programme that was able to analyse the huge amount of data and identify volcano-like shapes in the sonar lines. The programme found 201055 volcanoes over 100m tall. Previously, satellite data had identified 14164 volcanoes over 1500 m high. Hillier then extrapolated the data to estimate how many volcanoes exist beyond the areas the research vessels sounded out. If you've read "Not by Fire but by Ice ...

Chilean Volcano Seen from Space

This GOES-13 satellite imagery shows the Chilean caldera still emitting a steady stream of ash, three weeks after the initial eruption on June 4, 2011. The cold winter wind from the south carries it up the coast out over the Pacific, instead of over the Andes into Argentina. The video runs from June 24 through June 26, 2011. (No audio.)

Chile ash clouds grounds Australia, NZ flights (12 Jun 2011)

Chilean volcanic ash disrupts Australia-NZ flights Posted: 12 June 2011 1718 hrs SYDNEY - Ash from Chile's volcanic eruptions prompted Australian airlines to ground some domestic services and flights to New Zealand Sunday, stranding thousands of people after plumes drifted across the Pacific. Strong winds have carried the ash clouds some 9400 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand since Chile's Puyehue volcano erupted more than a week ago, and they are now entering Australian airspace. National carrier Qantas cancelled all flights to and from the southeastern island of Tasmania and all flights to and from Christchurch, Queenstown and Wellington in neighbouring New Zealand. It later extended the groundings to all flights to and from the southern Australian city of Melbourne and those to and from New Zealand's Auckland from 6.00pm (0800 GMT) Sunday, affecting around 8000 passengers in total. No intercontinental flights were immediately hit as none were scheduled to land in Melbourne on Sunday evening. "We believe that it's absolutely the right thing to ground these services. We will put them back up in the air as soon as possible but it's a safety first approach for our customers," Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth told ABC radio. Qantas said it had taken the precautionary measure until it knew more about the density of the cloud and its possible impact on aircraft. The airline's offshoot Jetstar has also grounded flights for Tasmania and New Zealand, as well as ...

NASA Mission Update: TRMM

For millions of people throughout the world, tropical rain systems are a life-sustaining resource. But these systems can turn violent and dangerous, spawning deadly storms and related natural disasters. Since its launch in 1997, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, or TRMM satellite, has become the worlds most widely used space-based resource for measuring Earths precipitation a key to understanding how weather affects and changes life here on our planet. Dr. Ramesh Kakar: "Understanding the earth's climate and how it responds to change relies on what we know about how atmospheric moisture, clouds, latent heating and large-scale atmospheric and oceanic circulation vary with changing climate conditions. The physical process that links these key climate elements is precipitation." With the first-ever space-borne rain radar and microwave radiometer combination, TRMM produces data used to verify and improve meteorological computer models so important to forecasters and climatologists across the globe. In fact, TRMM has become the reference standard by which rain is measured from space. Dr. Ramesh Kakar: "You may not have TRMM up there, but you may have some other satellite up there when it is raining. Now this satellite is providing calibrated information because its calibration is based upon TRMM." TRMM's data has not only been valuable in predicting the track and intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes, but has been used for forecasting the deadly floods and ...

Scie chimiche su Google Earth - Aereo cisterna sorvola a bassa quota Cossoine (Sassari)

Video of Iceland volcano eruption, giant ash clouds from Grimsvotn

Iceland's imposed a flight ban and closed its main airport after the country's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, erupted. It lies under the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland and has been dormant for 7 years. A large plume of smoke and ash is stretching 20 km into the air. Iceland's Meteorological Office says that the eruption at the Grimsvotn volcano has been accompanied by a series of small earthquakes. Scientists have been expecting a new eruption and have said previously that this volcano's eruption will likely be small and should not lead to the air travel chaos caused in April 2010 by ash from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano.
