
Gomer is not performing well as a Marine and Sgt Carter is letting him know about it, even threatening to send him to a remote duty station if he doesn't shape up. Soon after we learn that the reason for Gomer's worries is news from back home about cousin Goober who has quit his job at the gas station. The next thing we know Goober simply shows up at the base telling Gomer he wants to "try out" the Marines. Gomer then tells him that he shouldn't even be on base and to go get a hotel in town. Instead Goober sneaks back inside the barracks after Gomer has left, then when an officer on duty inspects the barracks, he runs into Goober, who by then has tried on one of Gomer's uniforms, complete with his own brown and white shoes! The officer then asks him for his name, but Goober just says "Pyle". He then tells him to stay put and moves on. Next Sgt Carter gets a report that "Pyle" was written up for being out of uniform, but he doesn't know anything about cousin Goober yet and just thinks it's Gomer. By then Goober has slipped out to the back of the barracks and the officer that was conducting the inspection earlier sees Goober again, still out of uniform, so he decides to take him to the psychiatrist. The doctor, who thinks Goober is a real Marine that's just out of uniform, calls Sgt Carter and tells him that "Pyle" should be discharged and later explains to him that "Pyle" is just exhibiting two personalities. So now Sgt Carter thinks that when Gomer is not performing well <b>...</b>
