SsangYong - the Korean vehicle manufacturer - with the odd sounding name has relaunched in Australia. Better known here for its range of peculiar looking vehicles, including such gems as the Stavic and Chairman, SsangYong has just launched its first new model in three years: enter the Korando. Ready to go almost two years ago, the new compact SUV had to cool its heels until a buyer was found for the Korean company. Mahindra, the huge Indian automotive conglomerate, bought a controlling interest of 70 per cent. The wheels started turning again in January this year. "The new Korando is going to be the brand-defining model for SsangYong in Australia," according to SsangYong general manager, Jeff Barber. He claims it's going to make the brand more relevant to the Australian market. That's a big call, although on paper the new Korando looks the goods. The three-model line-up will be exclusively diesel powered via a state-of-the-art 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, which is Euro 5 emission compliant. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.1-7.3L/100km (combined) depending on the specification. And the Korando will be available with a six-speed automatic - something many of its rivals don't offer. The entry-level S offers prospective SUV buyers a two-wheel drive version (following the current trend) and it's also front-wheel drive. Audi is on a roll. Every new or redesigned model it comes out with is excellent. They're fun to drive, luxurious and elegantly styled, with the best interiors in the business. And I'm happy to report, all of this applies to the brand-new A8, which recently hit the market.

1974 Moto-Ski Grandsport 440. This sled will be completely restored! Too nice an old girl to just ride. One of the smoothest running sleds I've ever owned, and I've had around 30 sleds since I was 6yrs old, so that's saying alot for this sled. The BSE 440 runs so flawlessly that I can't believe it! She rides, and handles beautfully! This had to be the Cadillac of snowmobiles in it's day. The only thing I don't like is the recovered seat. I'm curently looking for the right seat cover which is black with three orange stripes near the back. Sorry, parts of the video did'nt turn out so good. Just hung the camera around my neck with the strap. At least you can hear the BSE running!
Built off the same platform as the Freelander2 the Evoque shares only 10 per cent of its bits and pieces with its more rugged-looking sibling. That means a staggering 90 per cent of it is fresh for the baby Range Rover. Very few cars ever match the in-your-face impact of the concept they're loosely based on. The Range Rover Evoque isn't one of those cars. With the Evoque, the jaw-dropping LRX concept shown at Detroit in 2008 has been turned into production reality. That the designers were able to craft a five-door version that carries exactly the same visual impact but adds family-friendly practicality is impressive indeed. And it creates that practicality by adding about 1.15 inches of extra height in the glasshouse; the roofline slopes just a little less radically, but it's barely perceptible to the eye. And that means you get more headroom and better vision out through the rear window. That said, even the Coupe has more rear seat headroom than either a Range Rover Sport (35mm more -- it's 430mm shorter) or a BMW 3 Series Coupe (40mm more). Impressive indeed given the Evoque is just a smidgen longer than a Volkswagen Golf. Easily one of the best-looking cars to be released in the last five years, the Range Rover Evoque has the rising waistline, the sloping roofline and muscular, hunkered down look of the LRX concept. In the metal it's better looking and less intimidating than the pictures above would suggest; it's a car you would never tire of walking out onto your <b>...</b>

The Suzuki Kisashi has an eye catching design with strong lines drawing from the bonnet up towards the rear of the car. What is refreshing is that the Kizashi reflects contemporary design themes without mimicking any one particular brand. As the first mid-sized car from Suzuki it wanted to get it right and first impressions suggest it has ticked all the boxes. The Japanese car maker aimed high in its quest for refinement and ride quality - benchmarking the Kizashi against the best cars in class - the Mazda6 and Honda Accord Euro. The car maker even singled out luxury brand, Audi, with its A4 sedan. Two models are available - the entry-level XL and the flagship XLS. Both are only available in sedan guise and are powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine that develops 131kW of power and 230Nm of torque. Transmission choices are either a six-speed manual or the increasingly popular Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with gear-shift paddles on the XLS. Claimed fuel consumption is 7.9 litres per 100km - the same for both the manual and CVT.

The future is now, friends. In the space of just a few short months we've sampled both ends of the electric car spectrum, and can now say that a world without oil won't be so dull as you might have once thought it would be. The Tesla Roadster we drove a few months back was a revelation; its performance was staggering -- and the LEAF is just as impressive, if not as quick. What these two cars have in common, though, is that they're the stuff of science fact and not fiction. The Mercedes-Benz's F-Cell car, which was touring Australia recently, is great but you can't buy one and won't be able to for a wee while yet. The Tesla, Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi i-MiEV, on the other hand, are real cars that you can buy and drive now. Well, sort of. The LEAF won't go on-sale here until next year -- pricing is yet to be confirmed but expect it to be up around $60K -- about the same as a top-spec Toyota Prius. Quick spin in the awesome and fully restored Honda S800 by hondablog.nl The S800 is a sports car from Honda. Introduced at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show, the S800 would replace the successful Honda S600 as the company's image car and would compete with the Austin-Healey Sprite, MG Midget, Triumph Spitfire and Fiat 850 Spider. Like the S600, it was available as either a coupe or roadster and continued the advanced technology of its predecessors. The 791 cc straight-4 engine produced 70 hp (52 kW) at 8000 rpm, thus making this Honda's first 100 mph (160 km/h) automobile, but still allowing for 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km). In April 1967 the car was described as the fastest production 1-litre car in the world thanks to its high revving engine and the manufacturer's history of manufacturing powerful relatively low capacity motor-cycle engines. Honda S800 RSC Racecar. Early examples continued to use the chain drive and independent suspension in the rear, but after these cars (752 roadsters and 242 coupés) were produced, Honda switched to a conventional live axle rear end with four radius rods and a Panhard rod. 604 roadsters and 69 coupes were built with this setup before disc brakes replaced the front drums. In February 1968, the S800M (aka S800MK2) was introduced with flush mounted interior door handles, side marker lights outside, dual-circuit brakes, lean burn carburetion under the bonnet (hood) and safety glass. This is my DC2 integra running a jackson racing supercharger on approx 12psi max boost. 10:1 compression B18c-R with stock ITR cams, CP pistons and eagle rods. It has a 275cc meth injection nozzle pre-charger to cool the charger and keep IAT values down. The blue light on top of the steering column indicates when the meth is being used, it's controlled by an S300 Hondata ECU. It was 215hp at the wheels without the meth, havn't had it tuned to make use of the meth yet. Allthough its not a very impressive peak power figure the thing is a hoot to drive, so much pull down low. Vtec now comes in at 3000rpm and it's rare to bother taking it over 6000rpm as it's already making tonnes of torque by then anyway. It sort of feels like a 3.5 vtec V6 out of an accord or something but without the extra weight. It does not feel at all like a turbo car does because the power delivery is so flat.

There's little doubt the HiLux is the success story of the Toyota stable and that's saying something for a brand that has its fingers in so many different segments. The HiLux has for some time now been the undisputed champ of the utility market across work sites, fleet sales and recreational dual-cab 4WD sales. Now though, the competition is starting to hot up for the legendary load hauler... There are new versions of Ranger and BT-50 on the way, Amarok has gained a small foothold since its launch, Holden Colorado, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara will be refreshed soon and budget options from Mahindra, Foton and Great Wall have muddied the waters especially for ute buyers looking for a bargain basement option. HiLux hasn't been a cheaper option for a long time and that hasn't really changed with this refreshed version, but the price of the thing has never seemed to bother buyers. If you plan to torture your ute for years, many buyers simply don't look past a HiLux regardless of price. With this refreshed version, there are no less than 35 models to choose from starting with bargain basement single-cab Workmate platforms right up to the aforementioned full-house dual-cab SR5. Why the pricing tweak? Well, Toyota felt it was missing out on diesel sales in the numerous segments the HiLux competes in and, as such, it has sharpened the pricing across the range. With the 1 Series M Sport, BMW's stuck a fantastic engine in a fantastic little handling package and then tweaked that handling package to be even better. And at around $60k cheaper than an M3, it's a wee ripper. Talk to a BMW engineer and they'll talk your legs off explaining just what's gone into producing the new 1 Series M Sport. But, when you actually break it down, the philosophy is an age-old and simple one. And that is, you take a beefy engine drop it beneath the bonnet of an insanely well-balanced and smallish car and wall-ah you end up with a giant killer. Peugeot did it with the 205 GTi, VW did it with the Golf GTi and so on and so forth... Indeed, the new BMW 1 Series M Sport is so good we'll tell you right now, that if you were thinking about a new M3 you needn't bother. This thing is just as good (in fact, it might actually be better) and it's about $60k cheaper. The only problem is that every single car that BMW could get its hands on (100) has been sold. Even the new batch (another 100 cars) it managed to get have all been sold too; it's an instant classic, you see. Looking at the car it's clear to see the 1M means business. From the M gills, to the quad pipes at the back, and that skin-stretched-tight-over-rippling-muscle body, the 1 Series M Sport is easily the best looking M car for a long time. And we're so glad BMW chose not to build this car off the new-look 1 Series, because it's as ugly as sin.

The Optima is the latest iteration from Kia that was penned under the direction of chief design officer Peter Schreyer. It combines sharp exterior styling with modern (driver focused) interior design and, like the Cerato hatch and Sportage and Sorento SUVs before it, has a unique steering and suspension tune developed in Australia specifically for our roads. The equipment list is extremely generous and too long to detail here, but there is only one option - metallic paint for $450. The new Optima is 45mm longer, 25mm wider, 25mm lower and sits on a 75mm longer wheelbase than the current Magentis. A 148kW/250Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine sees the Optima sprint to 100km/h in nine seconds. While Kia has increased power and torque compared with the Magentis, the Optima has an average fuel consumption figure of 7.9L/100km, down from 8.1L/100km.
Now into its third generation the Mazda6 was the model that bought Mazda back from the doldrums in 2002 and put the Zoom-Zoom back into the brand. Refreshed in 2010 the Mazda6 copped additional kit and a $600 price reduction for the Classic hatch and sedan. The model line-up is comprehensive, with the entry-level Limited kicking off at $27310 [sedan only], then the Classic $31750 (sedan), $32750 (for the hatch), and $35050 (for the wagon). The range-topping Mazda6 in sedan form is the Luxury at $40905, and in hatch it's the Luxury Sports at $41415. There's a diesel in the line-up, currently only available with a manual transmission and it's the most expensive model priced at $42815 for the Sports Luxury hatch. The 2.5-litre in-line four-cylinder develops 125kW, and is matched to either a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic. It's not the most powerful engine in the class and it lacks an extra gear in the auto compared to the newer opposition, but it's an effective package and its flexibility from low rpm and strength through the mid-range makes it a standout. On-road is where the Mazda6 shines and the recent upgrade gave engineers the opportunity to tweak the chassis and the subsequent improvements in steering, handling and ride, make the Mazda6 the standout in the class.

FIRST THOUGHTS: The Ford Ranger has always been a tough performer on both job sites and off-road. With this new, locally designed and developed model, Ford has set the bar high and achieved levels of on-road refinement never before seen from the Ranger. Ford has Amarok and HiLux clearly and squarely in its sights. It's easy to get a little misty eyed and slip on the rose tinted spectacles when you're test driving a bona fide local product. We spend so much seat time in vehicles designed and built overseas, that a true Aussie product is rare. However, let's get that little bit of patriotism out of the way early. There's no need for it with Ranger. Sure the Ranger was developed and refined here, but it's heading to no less than 180 markets -- more than any other Ford product. And, it's going to kick some serious goals in every single one of them judging by our first drive. Straight up, the Ranger looks like a truck, in the US sense of the word. Think Ford F150. There's no doubt that Ford's legendary truck DNA is on display here and I think that's a good thing. I've always appreciated a truck that looks like a truck. They are supposed to be tough as nails and built for the long haul. Kia's recent performance Down Under has sparked everyone's attention. The Rio looks set to continue that trend with sharp pricing and attractive styling. Kia has had something of a charmed run over the past 12 months or so. Not without hard work and planning mind you, but things have been going along brilliantly for the South Korean brand. And that's in no small part due to the European influenced styling and a high quality of standard inclusions in its new models, and tuning for local conditions of the ride and handling. This has combined to bring buyers to the brand that might never have previously considered a Kia. At the local launch we tested the 5-door hatch, but the new Rio range will comprise three models across three grades. There'll also be a 3-door hatch and a 4-door sedan joining the stable later in the year and model grades will be known as 'S', 'Si' and 'SLi'.

Clever Cycles (clevercycles.com ) in Portland, Oregon also sells them. Bakfiets are Dutch bicycles designed for transporting goods and people (usually children). The Czech car maker Skoda has been back in Australia for two years now but you would be forgiven for not knowing that. Despite figures of 1000 plus sales a year you don't see many Skodas on the road. What most people don't know is that Skoda is owned by Volkswagen and that most Skodas are built off the underpinnings of the Golf. Take the Octavia RS. It is, principally, a Volkswagen Golf GTI underneath with a Skoda body on top. The core mechanicals and chassis are shared. The car we are testing is the new version of the RS. It comes with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine that was in the previous generation Golf GTI and is available in either a liftback (hatch) or wagon.
