The society is planning applied research and collaboration projects on aspects of zoo animal nutrition. These include the feeding value of browse (tree and shrub leaf and twig material) which is fed to browsing herbivores. The Near Infra-red Spectrophotometer allows the RZSS nutrition team to accurately evaluate the nutritional value of various animal feeds within minutes, that would take many hours with traditional wet chemistry. For more information about nutrition research at Edinburgh Zoo, please visit: www.rzss.org.uk

Find us on facebook: www.facebook.com Find out more about Walker: www.highlandwildlifepark.org The animal keepers at the RZSS carry out regular training sessions with many of our animals. Caring for large mammals such as polar bears has its challenges, and training, such as in this video, allows for regular health checks to be conducted with minimal fuss or stress for the animal. It also provides a source of valuable enrichment. Walker is currently the only polar bear in a UK Zoo.

04-Dec-2011 Working in conjunction with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) and the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA) in China, FedEx Express will fly two giant pandas non-stop from Chengdu Airport in China to Edinburgh Airport in Scotland on a specially-chartered Boeing 777F known as the "FedEx Panda Express." Tian Tian (甜甜, aka Sweetie), an eight year-old female panda, and Yang Guang (阳光, aka Sunshine), an eight year-old male panda from Chengdu's Bifengxia Panda Base, will travel onboard the specially-decaled Boeing 777F -- the world's largest twin-engine aircraft and the most fuel efficient wide-body in the FedEx fleet. Their arrival will mark the first time in more than 17 years that giant pandas will reside in the United Kingdom. The UK's last giant panda, Ming Ming, left London Zoo to return to China on October 26, 1994. Currently, conservationists estimate that only 1600 pandas remain in the wild. Both Tian Tian and Yang Guang are part of global giant panda conservation programs, designed to increase the panda population. Don't miss out on the exclusive behind the scenes footage of the load in process, aircraft departure and arrival of these two giant pandas! Your viewers can also check out their journey at blog.fedex.com/panda-express.
