Listen as author Dr. David Platt shares the passion behind his new book, Radical: Taking Back your Faith from the American Dream. The radical things Jesus said 2000 years ago still apply to Christians today. Denying ourselves, giving up everything, and loving Him above all others is a radically different way to live. But it is the only way to truly live. We were created for more than a middle class existence. We were meant to count for His glory.

5 Minutes Bible Study - Radical Christianity

RADICAL CHRISTIANITY by Dr. Harold Sala Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24 Our English word radical comes from a Latin word, radicalis or radix which means "root." If you want to pull a weed out of your garden, you go for the root, and if you really are radical, you cut through the trivia and go to the heart of an issue. Radicals, today, are off-beat, eccentric, and revolutionary, but nothing better describes authentic Christianity than the word radical. It all began with an individual who was—yes, radical, quite radical. When Jesus assembled the 12 along with an audience of several thousand individuals, He delivered His manifesto. We call it "The Sermon on the Mount," but actually, it wasn't a sermon. It was a statement, and He began by challenging logic and popular wisdom. He said the poor in spirit are blessed, and that those who mourn will be comforted. The height of His departure from what people accepted was His directive to turn the other check when people abuse and persecute you. Repeatedly He said, "You have heard it said..." but then challenged the status quo with, "But I say unto you..." Yes, that's radical—plenty radical. No wonder radicals are held in contempt in science and education, in business and commerce, and in the boards and clubs wherever you find men and women. But—and this is where the whole argument turns the corner—no one has ever accomplished ...

The Radical Apostle Paul - Marcus Borg

John Dominic Crossan and Marcus J. Borg—two of the world's top-selling Christian scholars and the bestselling authors of The Last Week and The First Christmas—once again shake up the status quo by arguing that the message of the apostle Paul, considered by many to be the second most important figure in Christianity, has been domesticated by the church. Borg and Crossan turn the common perception of Paul on its head, revealing him as a radical follower of Jesus whose core message is still relevant today. Book Description Bestselling authors of The Last Week and The First Christmas, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan join once again to present a new understanding of early Christianity—this time to reveal a radical Paul who has been suppressed by the church. Paul is second only to Jesus as the most important person in the birth of Christianity, and yet he continues to be controversial, even among Christians. How could the letters of Paul be used both to inspire radical grace and to endorse systems of oppression—condoning slavery, subordinating women, condemning homosexual behavior? Borg and Crossan use the best of biblical and historical scholarship to explain the reasons for Paul's mixed reputation and reveal to us what scholars have known for decades: that the later letters of Paul were created by the early church to dilute Paul's egalitarian message and transform him into something more "acceptable." They argue there are actually "Three Pauls" in the New Testament ...

The Historical Paul - John Dominic Crossan

Paul is second only to Jesus as the most important person in the birth of Christianity, and yet he continues to be controversial, even among Christians. How could the letters of Paul be used both to inspire radical grace and to endorse systems of oppression—condoning slavery, subordinating women, condemning homosexual behavior? Borg and Crossan use the best of biblical and historical scholarship to explain the reasons for Paul's mixed reputation and reveal to us what scholars have known for decades: that the later letters of Paul were created by the early church to dilute Paul's egalitarian message and transform him into something more "acceptable." They argue there are actually "Three Pauls" in the New Testament: "The Radical Paul" (of the seven genuine letters), "The Conservative Paul" (of the three disputed epistles), and "The Reactionary Paul" (of the three inauthentic letters). By closely examining this progression of Paul's letters—from the authentic to the inauthentic—the authors show how the apostle was slowly but steadily "deradicalized" to fit Roman social norms in regards to slavery, patriarchy, and patronage. In truth, Paul was an appealing apostle of Jesus whose vision of life "in Christ"—one of his favored phrases—is remarkably faithful to the message of Jesus himself.

TEDxPSU - Sam Richards - A Radical Experiment in Empathy

Sam Richards is a sociologist and award-winning teacher who has been inspiring undergraduate students at Penn State since 1990. Every semester, 725 students register for his Race and Ethnic Relations course, one of the most popular classes at Penn State and the largest of its kind in the country. Through his natural ability of seeing a subject from many angles, Richards encourages students to engage more fully with the world and to think for themselves — something he did not do until his third year in college. Because of his passion for challenging students to open their minds, an interviewer recently referred to him as "an alarm clock for eighteen-year-olds." His career began at the age of 24 when he was hired to teach a cybernetics course — just 15 minutes before the first class meeting. He remembers walking into the room without having had a moment to create a lesson plan and greeting his students, "Welcome to the course. I'm your instructor. And if you have no idea what cybernetics is, you're not alone — because I don't either." This characteristic willingness to be playfully transparent in the classroom, along with a talent for making complex ideas understandable and relevant, is the foundation of his success as a teacher. Richards is also the co-director of the World in Conversation Project at Penn State (www.worldinconversation.org), whose mission is to create a kind of dialogue about social and cultural issues that invites the unexamined, politically incorrect ...

5 Minutes Bible Study - The Case For Christ

THE CASE FOR CHRIST by Dr. Harold Sala If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. John 7:17 Lee Strobel was an unmitigated skeptic. As an investigative reporter and award-winning journalist for the Chicago Tribune, he never took anyone's word for anything. He couldn't. He knew human nature too well. Besides, he knew the law. He held a law degree from no less than Yale University's School of Law. Strobel's skepticism eventually developed into full-blown atheism. He was convinced that Christianity rested on legend which sprang up following the death of Christ and nothing more than that, yet something happened which drove a wedge in his prejudice. Of all things, his wife was converted. Describing his reaction, Lee said, "I rolled my eyes and braced for the worst, feeling like the victim of a bait-and-switch scam. I had married one Leslie—the fun Leslie, the carefree Leslie, the risk-taking Leslie—and now I feared she was going to turn into some sort of sexually repressed prude who would trade our upwardly mobile lifestyle for all-night prayer vigils and volunteer work in grimy soup kitchens." Instead, he was surprised "by the fundamental changes in her character, her integrity, and her personal confidence." He wanted to know if all of this was purely psychological, something which could be explained in strictly human terms, or if there was a valid case for authentic Christianity. Lee decided to ...

5 Minutes Bible Study - The Ninety-Five Thesis

THE NINETY-FIVE THESES by Dr. Harold Sala Know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified. Galatians 2:15-16 Young men are often radical and eager for change, so older professors were not terribly surprised when a young theologian who had been ordained to the ministry of the Church nailed a large piece of paper, handwritten in Latin, to the door of the Cathedral in Wittenberg, Germany on a chilly morning on October 31, 1517. Known as the Ninety-Five Theses, the ideas of those statements were to burn like a fire in Germany, trigger the Reformation, and split the historic Roman Catholic Church. And who was the author? History identifies him as Professor Martin Luther, then just 33 years of age. What was the Ninety-Five Theses all about? Principally Luther was angered over the manner of fund-raising that the church fathers were using to pay for the magnificent St. Peter's Cathedral, the finest church in the world, then under construction in Rome. Raising money for churches has always been controversial, but this was the granddaddy of all controversies. Before the smoke had subsided from the fires of controversy, Christendom was shaken to its very foundation. Luther never thought of himself as anything less than a faithful son of the Church. His intention was only to ...

Radical Discipleship (Mark 9:42-50) John MacArthur

www.gty.org And now I want you to open your Bible to Mark 9, verses 42 to 50, the last section in this ninth chapter...Mark chapter 9 and we'll pick up the account in verse 42. This is a very fascinating portion of Scripture. It has some features in it that are somewhat challenging to the interpreter and therefore highly challenging to me. It has been tampered with through the years, since the original revelation came from God. We know that because the early manuscripts that we have are consistent. Later manuscripts add things or change things. So we have additions in later manuscripts and we have alterations in later manuscripts. And that usually happens because there are scribes who want to increase the potency of a passage and so they add something to it, not something different, but they kind of double up on an emphasis. Or if they feel something is unclear, they might try to clarify it. Well this passage has both of those kinds of additions. There are things here that are so firm, so strong, so threatening, so severe that somewhere along the line people thought they needed to ramp up the message because of its severity. And there are things in this passage that are cryptic and challenging to interpret and so through the years there have been some alterations, maybe by scribes who wanted to clarify a little bit. Not a good thing to do, change the text. But fortunately we have as close to the original as we're going to get and we're going to take the passage at its ...
