Jaisalmer (Rajasthan)

Jaisalmer is located at 26.92° N 70.9° E. It has an average elevation of 229 metres and situated on the border of India and Pakistan in West Rajasthan. The majority of the inhabitants of Jaisalmer are Yadav Bhatti Rajputs, who take their name from an ancestor named Bhatti, renowned as a warrior when the tribe were located in the Punjab. Shortly after this the clan was driven southwards, and found a refuge in the Indian desert, which was henceforth its home. Deoraj, a famous prince of the Bhatti family, is esteemed the real founder of the Jaisalmer dynasty, and with him the title of rawal commenced. In 1156 Rawal Jaisal, the sixth in succession from Deoraj, founded the fort and city of Jaisalmer, and made it his capital as he moved from his former capital at Lodhruva (which is situated about 15 km to the south-east of Jaisalmer). In 1294, the Bhattis so enraged the emperor Ala-ud-din Khilji that his army captured and sacked the fort and city of Jaisalmer, so that for some time it was quite deserted. After this there is nothing to record till the time of Rawal Sahal Singh, whose reign marks an epoch in Bhatti history in that he acknowledged the supremacy of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The Jaisalmer princes had now arrived at the height of their power, but from this time till the accession of Rawal Mulraj in 1762 the fortunes of the state rapidly declined, and most of its outlying provinces were lost. In 1818 Mulraj entered into political relations with the British ...

The fort of Chittorgarh (Rajasthan)

Chittorgarh (also Chittor, Chittaur, or Chittaurgarh) is an ancient city in Rajasthan state of western India. It lies on the Berach River, a tributary of the Banas, and is the administrative headquarters of Chittorgharh District and a former capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar. The Kingdom of Mewar was founded by Bappa Rawal, of the Guhilot (or Gehlot/Guhila) clan of Rajputs, who established himself as ruler of Mewar in 734, with Chittor garh (Chittor fort) as his capital. Chittorgarh was captured in 1303 by Ala ud din Khilji, Sultan of Delhi, but was recaptured in 1326 by Hammir Singh, a scion of the same Gehlot clan. The dynasty (and clan) fathered by him came to be known by the name Sisodia after the village where he was born. By the 16th century, Mewar had become the leading Rajput state. Rana Sangha of Mewar led a combined Rajput forces against the Mughal emperor Babur in 1527, but was defeated at the Battle of Khanua. After the Mughal Emperor Akbar captured Chittorgarh in 1568, the capital was moved west to Udaipur, in the foothills of the Aravalli Range, where Rana Udai Singh II had established a residence in 1559. Udaipur remained the capital of Mewar until it acceded unto the union of India in 1947, and Chittorgarh gradually lost its importance. However, Chittorgarh remains replete with historic associations and hold a special place in the hearts of many Rajputs, as it was a bastion of the clan at a time when every other stronghold had succumbed to invasion ...

JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN - INDIA

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan state. Built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, the city is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets which are laid out into six quarters separated by broad streets 34 m wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), formal gardens, and a small lake (wikipedia).

Pushkar (Rajasthan)

Pushkar (Rajasthan) Pushkar is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. It is situated 14 Km from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams, pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus; it is often called "Tirth Raj" (the king of pilgrimage sites). In recent years it has become a popular destination for foreign tourists. Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principle temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims decend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. One of the primary temples is the 14th century temple dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world[1], so Lord Brahma's temple in Pushkar is quite rare. Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair. The natural environment of Pushkar and the sacred lake has become increasingly degraded in the last few decades. The problems stem mainly from overdevelopment of tourist facilities and the deforestation of the surrounding area [2] Please note that Pushkar, the pilgrim centre, should not be confused with Budha Pushkar (Old Pushkar), a town nearby. Budha Pushkar is famous for it's rose farming. Pushkar is one of the oldest places of India. The date of its actual founding is not known, but legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation. Ramayan mentions Pushkara and says that Vishvamitra performed tapa here. It further says that Apsara Menaka came to Pushkara to bathe in its sacred waters. Visit of Udaipur (Rajasthan)

Udaipur is located at 24.58° N 73.68° E. It has an average elevation of 598 metres. Located at the foothills of the Aravalli Range, Udaipur lies in southern Rajasthan near the Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh borders. [edit] Udaipur was the capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar, ruled by Ranawats of the Sisodia clan. The ancient capital of Mewar was Chittor or Chittorgarh, located on the Banas River northeast of Udaipur. Legend has it that Maharana Udai Singh came upon a hermit while hunting in the foothills of the Aravalli Range. The hermit blessed the king and asked him to build a palace on the spot and it would be well protected. Udai Singh established a residence there. In 1568 the Mughal emperor Akbar captured Chittor, and Udai Singh moved the capital to the site of his residence, which became the city of Udaipur. As the Mughal empire weakened, the Sisodia ranas, and later maharanas, reasserted their independence and recaptured most part of Mewar except the fort of Chittor. Udaipur remained the capital of the state, which became a princely state of British India in 1818. After India's Independence in 1947, the Maharaja of Udaipur acceded to the Government of India, and Mewar was integrated into India's Rajasthan state Udaipur is famous around the world as the City Of Lakes or Venice of The East. The Pichola Lake, Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar and Swaroop Sagar in this city are considered some of the most beautiful lakes in the state. Fateh Sagar contains two small islands, one ...

A song of gypsies in Rajasthan, India

I fortunately met Indian gypsies when I joined Camel Safari in Jaisalmer of Rajasthan, India. They and their song were so beautiful with being blown by the wind of desert of Jaisalmer. They lived in simple hats and they seemed earning money by playing their songs. Actually I had already heard this song in a CD of collection of gypsies songs before I met them, so it was surprising and happy to see they were singing it :)

The Amber fort (Rajasthan)

Amber is a ruined city of Rajasthan state, India. It was the former capital of Jaipur state. Amber was founded by the Meenas and was a flourishing settlement as far back as in 967 AD. Around 1037 AD, it was usurped by the Kachwaha clan of Rajputs, who ruled it until it was deserted (apart from the Bengali Brahmins of the Shila Devi temple and the gate keepers). In 1728, it was supplanted by the modern city of Jaipur, from which it is 5 miles distant. The picturesque situation of Amber at the mouth of a rocky mountain gorge, in which nestles a lovely lake, has attracted the admiration of all travellers, including Victor Jacquemont and Reginald Heber. It is seen to be a remarkable example for its combined Rajput-Mughal architecture. The old palace was begun by Raja Kakil Dev when Amber became his capital in 1036, although much modification was added during the reign of Raja Man SinghI in the 1600s. Among the chief building is the Diwan-i-Khas and the elaborately paited Ganesh Poll built by the Mirza Raja Jai Singh I. "No sooner had Mirza completed the Diwan-i-Khas" it is related "than it came to the ears of the emperor Jahangir that his vassal had surpassed him in magnificence, and that this last great work quite eclipsed all the marvels of the imperial city; the columns of red sandstone having been particularly noticed as sculptured with exquisite taste and elaborate detail. In a fit of jealousy the emperor commanded that this masterpiece should be thrown down, and sent ...

Latcho Drom - Banjaras Indian Rajasthan Gypsy Dance

Director: Tony Gatlif Writer: Tony Gatlif Latcho Drom (rom for "safe journey") describes the travels, singing and dancing of 'Gypsy' groups from Rajahstan (India), Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain. Some scenes are acted, but there is no dialogue or narration--only partial translation of some songs. The film illustrates the variety of conditions in which the 'Gypsy' people live--earthbound nomads in the hot deserts of Asia, ironsmiths and abjectly poor tree-dwellers in the frozen plains of Eastern Europe, and craftspeople and traders in the hills and seasides of north Africa and western Europe. It also illustrates the similarities in travel habits, musical tones (spoons, open drums, and string-based rhythms) and song themes (celebration of travel and perceived rejection by sedentary locals).

Jodhpur (Rajasthan)

Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chief belonging to the Rathore clan. Rao Jodha succeeded in conquering the surrounding territory and thus founded a state which came to be known as Marwar. As Rao Jodha hailed from the nearby town of Mandore, that town initially served as the capital of this state; however, Jodhpur soon took over that role, even during the lifetime of Rao Jodha. The city was located on the strategic road linking Delhi to Gujarat. This enabled it to profit from a flourishing trade in opium, copper, silk, sandals, date palms and coffee. Early in its history, the state became a fief under the mughal empire, owing fealty to them while enjoying some internal autonomy. During this period, the state furnished the mughals with several notable generals such as Maharaja Jaswant Singh. Jodhpur and its people benefited from this exposure to the wider world: new styles of art and architecture made their appearance and opportunities opened up for local tradesmen to make their mark across northern India. Aurangzeb briefly sequesterated the state (c.1679) on the pretext of a minority, but the rightful ruler was restored to the throne after Aurangzeb died in 1707. The mughal empire declined gradually after 1707, but the Jodhpur court was beset by intrigue; rather than benefitting from circumstances, Marwar descended into strife and invited the intervention of the Marathas, who soon supplanted the mughals as overlords of the region. This however did not ...

Rajasthan Folk Music Kesariya Balam

My Friends Bhutte Khan and Bhunger Khan Manganiar and Party sing the perennial Rajasthani Folk favourite Kesariya Balam Padharo Mhare Des. The Manganiyar community have performed their vibrant folk music for centuries in the desert regions of Rajasthan. Their songs form a chronicle of the life of the desert. Accompanied by the Dholak drums, the Manganiyar fiddle called the Kamaycha and the Khadtal - two wooden blocks held between fingers deftly manipulated with hand movements to create a staccato of rhythm - the Manganiyars peform their music on festive occasions, village gatherings, weddings, or for aristocratic patrons. The songs are inspired by desert folklore, mythology, sufi mysticism and borrow from both Hindu and Muslim traditions. Bhutte and Bhunger Khan and party frequently tour outside India.
