Building a Warp-Weighted Loom, Part I

This is a brief introduction to the warp-weighted loom that would have been used throughout medieval Scandinavia. All the cloth for Viking sails would have been woven on this type of loom. In Part II you can see Professor Wayne Harbert of Cornell University and I actually build and operate one of these looms.

Building a Solar Wood Dehydrator

www.knightwithoutarmor.com - Last spring I built this solar wood dehydrator to house the wood for our wood stove. After the epic snows of last winter here in Maryland, I wanted a place to store a lot of wood safely without fear of it getting wet or covered in snow. I decided to create a shed not just to store the wood, but to dry it out as well. I faced the slant of the roof south and covered it with old greenhouse plastic. The front and back were left open all summer for ventilation and only closed this autumn. The shed has been a dream so far this winter and the wood burns exceptionally well.

Tafl, Viking Chess

www.knightwithoutarmor.com - This is a short presentation on Tafl, a medieval Scandinavian board game similar to chess. Though we cannot be certain what the rules were or how the game was played, we have a fair idea of the main objectives: a king and his retainers in the center of the board have to fend off and escape an attack from pieces on the edges of the board.
