415. Aci, Aci, Buka Pintu (P. Ramlee)
This video is a tribute to Tan Sri P. Ramlee (1929-73), famous Malaysian actor, film director and songwriter. He wrote over 360 songs, most of which were used in his movies, though this one was written by Ainol Jamal. This song, "Aci, Aci, Open the Door", is from the 1962 comedy film "Nasib Si Labu Labi" ("The Fate of Labu and Labi", or "What Happened to Labu and Labi"), which was a sequel to the earlier "Labu dan Labi". It was sung by P. Ramlee and Salmah Ismail (1935-1983), better known as Saloma. The song is in the form of a dialogue between an elderly Indian lady, who would be addressed as Aci, and her husband. An old Indian man would be addressed as Nana. The old man asks his wife to open the door and tells her not to be afraid of the ghost bird, the owl, as he has a walking stick to protect them against it. She tells him there is a "jembalang" behind the house - a ghost in the form of a deer or bull. He replies that the ghosts will run away when they see his parang - a big knife used for cutting vegetation - though he seems a bit worried that his weapon is quite a small one. His wife however is reassured and remembers that she can also use her broom as a weapon. Fans of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee are in for a treat. A special documentary, which explores the life of P. Ramlee, with some rare footages, will premiere on History Channel (Astro Channel 555) on Oct 31 at 9pm. Well known filmmaker Shuhaimi Baba talks about her experience in getting the research and interviews for this documentary.

For my Malaysian friends. Tan Sri P. Ramlee (1929-73) was a famous Malaysian actor, film director and songwriter. He wrote over 360 songs, most of which were used in his movies. This song, one of his most popular, is from the 1960 movie, Antara Dua Darjat (The Two Classes). I found it quite difficult to learn this song, as it is not my usual style, but it was a request, so here it is at last. I hope I've got it right. The words mean something like this: The stirring of my soul Bathes my heart with emotion, By the arranged notes Of rhythm and song. If it is only modest, It doesn't matter. Perhaps it could awaken you. Realise this, good man. Never will they vanish, Rhythm and song. Like blossoms, They will linger forever. It's a while since I've put up a P. Ramlee song, so, for my Malaysian friends, and all those who love his music, here is a lullaby requested by abgbakar123. Tan Sri P. Ramlee (1929-73) was a famous Malaysian actor, film director and songwriter. He wrote over 360 songs, most of which were used in his movies. The lyrics of this one were written by Datuk Jamil Sulong This is the title song from the movie, "Anakku Sazali" (1956), in which P. Ramlee plays the role of both the father, Hassan, and his son, Sazali. Hassan, a musician, elopes to Singapore with Ani, knowing that her parents would never approve of the marriage. Hassan becomes very successful as a musician and composer, and is overjoyed at the news of Ani's pregnancy, but his happiness is shortlived, as she dies giving birth to his son, Sazali. Hassan's affection for his son can be heard in this lovely lullaby he sings to him. Unfortunately his overindulgence of his son means Sazali grows up as a rich spoilt brat, eventually becoming one of Singapore's most wanted men. Shot by the police during a burglary he escapes and seeks shelter in his father's home. P. Ramlee won the Best Male Actor Award at the 4th Asian Film Festival in Tokyo, 1957, for his dual role in this film. He wrote over 360 songs, most of which were used in his movies, including this one, which is about a wedding celebration. I first heard this song many years ago on a 78 record, and was intrigued by it, long before I knew anything about Malaysia. I tried to copy down the words from the record, but it was not until the coming of the Internet that I was able to get the actual Malay words. I haven't heard it sung for a long time so I can not guarantee the accuracy of either the pronunciation or the tune. Di sebuah negara yang bernama Entadiman, tinggal seorang hartawan bernama Mashood. Dia sangar sombong, takbur, bakhil dan tidak percaya bahawa kekayaannya itu datang daripada Allah. Dia menyangka kekayaan hanya datang dari manusia yang bijak sepertinya sahaja. Mashood mempunyai tiga orang puteri yang cantik jelita - Suhara, Mastura dan Zahara. Oleh kerana Mastura sering tidak sependapat dengan ayahnya, dia dinikahkan dengan seorang gembala kambing bernama Syawal sedangkan Suhara dan Zahara dinikahkan dengan orang-orang kaya. Pada suatu hari, sedang Syawal mencari kambingnya yang hilang di sebuah gua, dia terjumpa harta yang sangat banyak. Apabila dia hendak mengambil harta tersebut, muncul Jin yang menjaga harta itu lalu memberitahunya yang harta itu adalah kepunyaan Ahmad Albab. Syawal sangat bingung memikirkan siapakah dia Ahmad Albab?
