www.learningdslrvideo.com I took my girls to a skating rink in Boulder yesterday for a birthday party and when we got there, there was a short feature film being shot at the skating rink. I asked one of the crew what the project was and he said it was a short feature called Delirium, he said it was a psychological thriller that takes place mostly in Europe. They were using a RED camera, I don't know anything about that line of cameras but it looked like the Epic. I was amazed how uncomfortable the DP because her neck looked so uncomfortable. I guessing they rented the camera and didn't know how to outfit it properly. The main actor looked a little like Zac Efron, but my wife watched this footage and said it wasn't. Boy she seemed really uncomfortable with the camera. I looked at the monitor feed, and the footage coming off the RED look very nice. The natural light looked good at 4:30pm in the afternoon. I was amazed how fast they kept moving around the rink, it seemed very unscripted, like they were mostly trying to get B-roll. The director would yell out where they should be. "Director Kunz" was on the clapper board, but I could find anything about him online. Must be a small film, not worried about getting model releases for all the people in the video (extras). www.learningdslrvideo.com A while back I did a BTS video of a camera crew using the RED Epic, after that I got an email from James Drake who is co-owner of 5kInsight.com, a local RED camera rental house in Denver, asking if I would like to see one and try it out. I was like, "Sure you bet, that would be fun". So we met up at Denver's Union Station a few days ago and James gave me a tutorial on how to shoot with it which you will see here, after that I got to shoot a video interview with James using his Epic. It's an interesting interview and tutorial because James relates a lot stuff on the RED Epic to shooting with a DSLR since he owns a Canon 5D as well. I think this tutorial is worth watching or at least bookmarking because some of you in the future will need to rent one of these to intermix footage with your DSLR or do an entire shoot with it when you client has the budget for it. Right now I'm in the process of taking the Epic's footage from the interview and learning the workflow so I can publish the interview pretty soon, so keep an eye out for it. I wanted say thanks to Patrick Downey who is James assistant that was nice enough to take my Canon T2i and film this tutorial for me. If you noticed the audio change during the tutorial, this because Patrick had to change cards and the second part of the audio was not done on a Magic Lantern card so you can heard the AGC in action.

www.learningdslrvideo.com In my last video you got to see James Drake of 5kinsight.com give me a tutorial on using the RED Epic, right after that he gave me the camera to shoot with. Since I had questions about renting the Epic, I interviewed James with the Epic. Before I start in the interview. I shot the video at 5k resolution. I downloaded the RED-Cinex program I did some coloring there and then in Premiere I brought in the native R3D files and was surprised they played back really well on my machine. I wanted to draw more attention to James so I added a vignette. I also noticed that some light rays where coming in from the high windows and I wanted to accent them a little so I created some light rays and tracked them with the originals as they crossed the station. So real quick this is what the raw files of the camera looked like and this is what I did to it. Since I don't own any sort of 4k display device I published this video to 1080. To be fair this type of shot is really not where the Epic shines, but I didn't have time to do much more than this. Who rents a RED Epic? This last week has been a whirlwind. As I, like many other Scarlet Owners, waited years for this day to finally come. Last Thursday, Scarlet-X #567 arrived on my doorstep in Reno, NV. All of my accessories minus the side handle had already been ordered and shipped previously so it was only the brain that came. Upon pulling it out my permanent smile continued as the build quality was exceptional just as I had witnessed with the Epic as well as the Scarlet at the Nov. 3d event, but it doesn't quite hit you until you hold your very own copy of the camera. It's also amazing how small the camera is when you hold it in the palm of your hand. Although juggling some editing projects that have kept me busy this last week, we did manage to get in a number of test shoot days around the area. I have put together a simple little video showing off the footage. A disclaimer though: This was my first week with the camera so we were trying out many different settings as well as still learning proper usage of the camera, My darker ND filter also hadn't arrived yet so most of my outdoor clips were not shot at an optimal quality F-Stop. Also Compressed Youtube really doesn't do the footage justice. Also the color correction added minus for the graveyard shots was just a quick pass and play with the source settings within Premiere. Watching it in full quality on my 40" editing monitor is truly a sight to behold though, there is just an insane amount of detail and native dynamic range in the <b>...</b>

As far as the lighting goes, we used an Arri kit. We filmed the smashing of the pumpkins right outside my friends <b>...</b>

Here is the first video I shot with my brand new RED EPIC-X! Shot in 5KFF using Duclos Cine-mod Tokina 11-16mm t2.8 and RED 18-50mm t3.0. I just got my EPIC-X last week. Since I've been working so much I haven't had much time to post or even shoot with it. Finally I got some free time and I took an awesome day-trip with my dad to Montgomery woods to shoot the world's largest redwood trees! This is the second RED video I have edited in Adobe Premiere. (the first being shot on the RED ONE MX) Considering I use After Effects and Photoshop every day, I am 100% done with FCP. Premier took me about 1 hour to adjust to. I love being able to edit raw 5K footage (or even 7D footage) without rendering! If you are having trouble deciding on wether or not to switch from FCP to Premiere, JUST DO IT NOW. Trust me. I waited 5 months to switch when I should have waited 5 seconds. The Epic-X is by far the coolest camera I've ever shot with. The capabilities are endless! Music by my favorite band: Hammock - "Something Other Than Remaining" Hammock is the first band I've bought everything from on iTunes. I highly suggest the same for you guys! What an inspiring music group!
This is a somewhat David and Goliath story. It is safe to say that a GH2 does not belong on a film set but with some care and stable hacking, this little cam does what it does. I was extremely careful conducting these tests. Every shot was focus assisted, all apertures matched and each cam was on its highest setting. No effects were added or taken away.
