Black Holes and Galaxies: Professor Reinhard Genzel at ANU, July 2009
Evidence has been accumulating for several decades that many galaxies harbor central mass concentrations that may be in the form of black holes with masses between a few million to a few billion time the mass of the Sun. In this public lecture, Professor Genzel discusses measurements over the last two decades, employing high resolution infrared and radio imaging and spectroscopy on large ground-based telescopes that prove the existence of such a massive black hole in the centre of our Milky Way, beyond any reasonable doubt. These data also provide key insights into its properties and environment. Future interferometric studies of the Galactic Center black hole promise to be able to test gravity in its strong field limit. Professor Genzel also briefly summarizes the cosmological evolution of massive black holes. This event is brought to you by the Australian Institute of Physics and the Black Hole Society, and took place on Monday 27 July 2009.

Scored for two flutes, two oboes, one bassoon, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, harpsichord and strings Jean-Féry Rebel was the second and most famous of three generations to serve in the French court from 1661 to 1775. His father, Jean Rebel, entered the royal chapel in 1661 singing under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Lully. When Lully noticed the music talents of eight-yearold Jean-Féry, he tutored him in violin and composition. From 1699 to 1733, Rebel held several positions in the court of Louis XIV and at the Opéra. He joined the Opéra in 1699 as violinist, and then assumed additional jobs as harpsichordist (1702-15), batteur de mesure (lit. Der Zauber kam natürlich schon am nächsten Morgen raus, Die Fälschung war wohl doch nicht so geschickt. Der Rektor kam, holte mich schnaubend aus der Klasse raus, So stand ich da, allein, stumm und geknickt. Dann ließ er meine Eltern kommen, lehnte sich zurück, Voll Selbstgerechtigkeit genoß er schon Die Maulschellen für den Betrüger, das mißrat'ne Stück, Diesen Urkundenfälscher, ihren Sohn.
