John Renbourn - The Mist Covered Mountains of Home 1-3 1979

John Renbourn - Medley - The Mist Covered Mountains of Home-The Orphan -Tarboulton 1979 One one the finest acoustic guitar pieces ever heard. Medley taken from: John Renbourn - The Black Balloon 1979 This album is one of John's 'medieval' style albums, with 13th and 16th century pieces mixed with a couple of Renbourn tracks. The songs are all credited as being 'traditional arranged Renbourn' - but at least The Pelican and The Black Balloon are certainly not traditional. The flute is played by Tony Roberts, the tabors by Stuart Gordon. Renbourn-Theessink-Dickinson - Walking The Dog (Part 1)

Song written by Rufus Thomas back in 1963. This version is from the live Concert in Pavia (Italy) 07 September 2005, featuring John Renbourn, Hans Theessink and John Dickinson. Dickinson is playing slide along with Theessink. The performance lasts more than 8 minutes, so I had to cut it in two parts.

Traveller's Prayer - John Renbourn

Praise to the moon, bright queen of the skies, Jewel of the black night, the light of our eyes, Brighter than starlight, whiter than snow, Look down on us in the darkness below. If well you should find us then well let us stay, Be it seven times better when you make your way, Be it seven times better when we greet the dawn, So light up our way and keep us from all harm. Give strength to the weary, give alms to the poor, To the tainted and needy five senses restore, Give song to our voices, give sight to our eyes, To see the sun bow as the new moon shall rise. Cast your eyes downwards to our dwelling place, Three times for favour and three times for grace, Over the dark clouds your face for to see, To banish misfortune and keep Trinity. In the name of our Lady, bright maiden of grace, In the name of the King of the City of Peace, In the name of our Saviour, who hung on the tree, All praise to the moon, for eternity.
John Renbourn - "Bransle Gay" (Cover)

Another fantastic short arrangement by John Renbourn. This is a French dance published by Claude Gervaise during the mid fifteen-hundreds. The piece appears on John Renbourn's "The Lady and the Unicorn" and also as part of a live set on Pentangle's "Sweet Child" album. I also learnt this from John's "Complete Anthology Of Medieval & Renaissance Music For Guitar". Lots of information on John here: www.john-renbourn.com More to follow in the next few days! www.seansiegfried.moonfruit.com

John Renbourn - "The Earle Of Salisbury" (Cover)

An attempt at John Renbourn's arrangement of a stately Pavan, written by English composer William Byrd in the early sixteenth century. It's a very satisfying piece to play on the guitar. I learnt it from a DVD called "Medieval & Renaissance Music", which is from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop (a site with tons of video lessons by John Renbourn and many other great guitarists, for anyone interested): guitarvideos.com Here's me: www.seansiegfried.moonfruit.com Some more early pieces coming soon!

John Renbourn, Clarsach, the Nine Maidens

open-tuned-guitar.blogspot.com I was looking for John Renbourn stuff on Youtube the other day and I noticed that there weren't many versions of his masterpiece "The Nine Maidens". I discovered this as a teenager in the 1980s and it changed my life completely. I had previously been learning fingerstyle guitar after giving up hard rock forever, but this was different to anything I had ever heard before. This is my attempt at the first part of the Nine Maidens. It's not wonderful, but I hope it gives you a taste of Renbourn's work and maybe you'd like to find out more. I got to the point where I couldn't stand listening to the original because it just showed how bad my playing was in comparison. Now I'm older, I've given up taking myself too seriously, and just play to enjoy myself, mistakes and all. The tuning is G minor DGDGBbD. Renbourn also used this tuning on an album called "The Black Balloon", and although it produces wonderful sounds on the guitar, it is rather limited. Sorry about the poor sound quality, I just used a webcam to record it. As my computer is a bit old now, the picture quality isn't very good either, that's why I switched on an artistic filter to hide that 'out of sync' effect that I get!

JUDY (by John Renbourn)

Thr first was Davey Grahm with his "Anjy", a piece composed for his woman. John Renbourn with "Judy", for second, makes the same kind of song. After them, many others... I love John Renbourn's music and this famous tune particularly: for me it's so evocative!... and I hope also for you!... John Renbourn played this tune with his Guild D-55, I can play it only with my Guild GAD-50: I must be pleased...!...
