Kosovo & Serbia: No Bridge Between

Watch more on RT's documentary channel rtd.rt.com The Republic of Kosovo is situated in southeastern Europe. It is a self-declared independent state and has de facto control over most of the territory, while North Kosovo, the largest Kosovo Serb enclave, is under the control of institutions of the Republic of Serbia. The long-term severe ethnic tensions between Kosovo's ethnic Albanian and Serb populations are still the number one issue in the region and who knows when will be settled? Malagurski: Serb Protesters in Kosovo Face Off with Armed NATO Forces

NATO peacekeepers have used tear gas against Serb protesters in northern Kosovo. They dispersed the crowd in order to start dismantling barricades erected in a protest against deployment of customs checkpoints on the border. Some 300 Serbs tried to prevent the Kosovo peacekeeping force (KFOR) from tearing down the barricades in Kosovo's north, but the soldiers were armed with anti-riot equipment to cordon off the barricaded area. At least 100 armed transport vehicles are involved in the operation, which is aimed at removing the 16 barricades on the border. KFOR is also using a number of drones, which are circling over the area of the conflict. NATO action follows a week of tense negotiations with the protesters, which failed to produce a peaceful solution. Northern Kosovo is home to some 40000 Serbs, who constitute a majority in several towns in the area. They do not recognize the Albanian government in Pristina. Many of them complain of persecution by Albanians. Serbian-Canadian documentary filmmaker Boris Malagurski views the protests as a fight for survival by the Serbs of northern Kosovo. "They are living in horrible conditions, basically in a ghetto, so their presence on the barricades is a form of silent protest against what NATO has planned for Kosovo. And Serbs have no intention of giving up. If this was organized by a regime that is supported by the West, they would have been hailed as freedom fighters," Malagurski told RT. 'Impossible to build border between Kosovo & Serbia'

RT spoke to Borislav Stefanovic, Serbia's chief negotiator on how to end what is being called a test of nerves in northern Kosovo. He believes it is impossible to resolve the situation the way Pristina intends to. "There's an attempt to create a border between Serbia and Kosovo. There cannot be a border, especially in an area in which we have a majority of Serbs living. There cannot be a border because it is an administrative line," he said. "The second thing is that once you put customs officers, then you put a flag, then you will put a coat of arms, then you will put so-called 'Kosovo laws,' and then people who live here will be circled by something that looks like the Kosovo state," Stefanovic went on to explain. Serbs cannot accept such a scenario, the diplomat says, and therefore a different solution has to be found. "We hope for an outcome where we will have a regulation of the flow of goods in the north, but that regulation is status neutral, without Kosovan customs, and then we can move on on finding and managing the revenue share and what laws will be implied," Borislav Stefanovic proposed. Trouble flared in July when Kosovan police tried to take over two northern border crossings -- a move which was resisted by local Serbs who blockaded access roads. NATO and EU forces then moved in to try and establish control. Late last month, some barricades were bulldozed, resulting in violence, with peacekeepers using rubber bullets and tear gas against the Serbs. RT on ...

More Violence in Kosovo: NATO Tells Troops to Use Live Ammunition

At least two Kosovan Serbs and two NATO peacekeepers were injured in a fresh wave of violence in northern Kosovo, casting doubts on whether the conflict could be resolved in the near future. The skirmishes occurred near the town of Zubin Potok, where Serbs were protesting NATO's attempts to remove a barricade made of buses and trucks that was blocking a main road in the region. NATO peacekeeping troops responded by firing rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons at the demonstrators. They also used pepper spray and batons against the protesters, while the latter hit the NATO peacekeepers with clubs and pelted them with rocks. NATO has been claiming the two injured peacekeepers were under fire from the Serb demonstrators and is now instructing its soldiers to fire live ammunition if they come under attack. Violence between Kosovan Serbs and NATO troops and Kosovan police flared up this summer after the self-proclaimed Kosovo government sought to set up customs and border posts in the north of the country, where Serbs, although overall a minority, make up a majority. The Serb population responded by burning one of the posts and attacking Kosovan police. NATO troops were then called in, but Serbs began setting up barricades made of mud, soil, rock and concrete barriers to block the main road arteries leading to the border. This led to several skirmishes over the past months involving NATO peacekeepers and Kosovan Serbs. Just last week more than 20 Portuguese and Hungarian ...

Footballs Greatest - Franz Beckenbauer [Bayern Munich & Germany]

Franz Anton Beckenbauer (born 11 September 1945 in Munich) is a German football coach, manager, and former player, nicknamed Der Kaiser ("The Emperor") because of his elegant style, his leadership, his first name "Franz" (reminiscent of the Austrian emperors), and his dominance on the football pitch. He is generally regarded as the greatest German footballer of all time and one of the greatest and most decorated footballers in the history of the game. Beckenbauer was a versatile player who started out as a midfielder but made his name as a defender. He is often credited as having invented the role of the modern sweeper or libero. Twice selected the European Footballer of the Year, he appeared 103 times for West Germany and played in three World Cups. He lifted the World Cup trophy as captain in 1974, and repeated the feat as a manager in 1990. With the club Bayern Munich, he won three consecutive European Cups from 1974 to 1976, and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1967. Beckenbauer is one of two players (along with Carles Puyol) to captain three European Cup winning sides. He went on to become coach and president of the institution. He is also a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was voted second place, behind Johan Cruyff, in the European player of the Century election held by the IFFHS and he was voted third, behind Pelé and Cruyff, in the IFFHS' "World Player of the Century" election. Dramatic video: Serbs attack, set Kosovo border post on fire

NATO-led international peacekeepers, KFOR, strengthen control of the two checkpoints in northern Kosovo following the clash between local Serbs and Kosovo special police. The UN Security Council is to discuss the situation on Thursday. KFOR forces have been deployed to the area to try and ease tensions after a mob of angry Serbs threw petrol bombs and set fire to a customs post on Kosovo's northernmost border with Serbia in Jarinje, a few hours after Kosovo's police withdrew from the area. NATO forces had to fire at a Serb mob in order to bring the situation under control, AP reports. There have been no reports of casualties.

Controlled Instability: Kosovo police face-off at check point

Kosovo has sent its special forces to the Serb-populated north - after a tit-for-tat trade ban caused tension to flare up. Police seized control over one border crossing, while the other two are being blocked by local Serbs. Kosovo's move has been widely-condemned by the UN and the EU, among others - and it's feared it will stoke ethnic anger. Kosovo proclaimed its independence in 2008 when it unilaterally split from Serbia. Some 600-thousand Serbs still live in the region, but refuse to recognize Kosovan sovereignty. Kosovo's independence has been a bone of contention between Serbia and the EU- which is pressing Belgrade to recognize Kosovo before it can become a member. Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija could face a humanitarian disaster.

NATO's KFOR troops shut down the checkpoints of Jarinje and Brnjak earlier this week, preventing supplies from central Serbia from reaching Serbs in the north. The urged the international community to prevent this and open administrative line crossings in the north of Kosovo, and thus enable the delivery of medicines and other supplies and transport of patients to clinical centers in central Serbia. Director of Kosovska Mitrovica Hospital Milan Jakovljević stated at a press conference that in a few days the hospital will run out of oxygen, certain medicines, fuel, food for patients and technical water. At the moment, there are 15 patients in the Kosovska Mitrovica hospital who are in need of oxygen for their further treatment, babies included. The hospital does not have a sufficient amount of pain medication, dialysis sets and medicines for psychiatric and cardiac patients, Jakovljević stressed. There have also been shortages of bread, milk, and dairy products in the town's stores, while supplies of bottled water and fruit and vegetables are running out.

Veri, tensioni vazhdon

After taking two Northern border checkpoints under control, handed over by the Regional Operation Support Units (ROSU), the situation seems to be tense again. A few hours after the news that ROSU forces retrieved from Bernjak, other recent information indicates that these forces not only have returned, but they have even encountered Serbian rage. A police motorcade has been under attack, and some agents were wounded. At least one police agent was sent in Mitrovice and then in Prishtina hospitals after being wounded during an attack that took place along the Zubin Patok-Leposavic road. Local Zubin Patok media claim that gunshots were heard near Varag and Zhupq villages, where KFOR forces exchanged fire with a group of Serbians who blocked the road. Prime Minister Thaçi rejects information about the achievement of an agreement with Serbia. Kosovo public television announces that Thaçi confirmed the decision that Kosovo Special Police will continue to stay at border checkpoints 1 and 31.
