Richard Thompson - Beeswing

I was nineteen when I came to town, they called it the Summer of Love They were burning babies, burning flags. The hawks against the doves I took a job in the steamie down on Cauldrum Street And I fell in love with a laundry girl who was working next to me Oh she was a rare thing, fine as a bee's wing So fine a breath of wind might blow her away She was a lost child, oh she was running wild She said "As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay. And you wouldn't want me any other way" Brown hair zig-zag around her face and a look of half-surprise Like a fox caught in the headlights, there was animal in her eyes She said "Young man, oh can't you see I'm not the factory kind If you don't take me out of here I'll surely lose my mind" Oh she was a rare thing, fine as a bee's wing So fine that I might crush her where she lay She was a lost child, she was running wild She said "As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay. And you wouldn't want me any other way" We busked around the market towns and picked fruit down in Kent And we could tinker lamps and pots and knives wherever we went And I said that we might settle down, get a few acres dug Fire burning in the hearth and babies on the rug She said "Oh man, you foolish man, it surely sounds like hell. You might be lord of half the world, you'll not own me as well" Oh she was a rare thing, fine as a bee's wing So fine a breath of wind might blow her away She was a lost child, oh she was running wild She said "As long as ...
Richard Thompson - Wall of Death

Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time You can waste your time on the other rides This is the nearest to being alive Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death You can go with the crazy people in the Crooked House You can fly away on the Rocket or spin in the Mouse The Tunnel Of Love might amuse you Noah's Ark might confuse you But let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death On the Wall Of Death all the world is far from me On the Wall Of Death it's the nearest to being free Well you're going nowhere when you ride on the carousel And maybe you're strong but what's the good of ringing a bell The switchback will make you crazy. Beware of the bearded lady Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time Oh let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time You can waste your time on the other rides This is the nearest to being alive Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death Let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
Richard Thompson - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike. A girl could feel special on any such like" Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952. And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme" And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man. For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen, I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine. Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22 And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you. And if fate should break my stride Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride" "Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae "For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery. Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside. Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside" When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left He was running out of road, he was running out of breath But he smiled to see her cry He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride" Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl. Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do, Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52" Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys Said "I've got no further use for these. I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome, Swooping down from heaven to carry me home" And he gave ...

From Across A Crowded Room VHS 1985 Richard Thompson: Guitar/Vocals Clive Gregson: Guitar/Vocals Christine Collister: Vocals Raurie McFarlane: Bass Gerry Conway: Drums Lyrics: When the spell is broken When the spell is broken How you ever gonna keep her now You can't cry if you don't know how When the spell is broken When the spell is broken All the joy is gone from her face Welcome back to the human race How long can the flame Of love remain When you curse and fight And never see like Or hear like spoken When the spell is broken (Can't cry if you don't know how) (Can't cry if you don't know how) When the spell is broken (Can't cry if you don't know how) Oh when the spell is broken All your magic and your ways and schemes All your lies come and tear at your dreams When the spell is broken (Can't cry if you don't know how) When the spell is broken Now you're handing her that same old line It's just straws in the wind this time When love has died, There's none starry-eyed No kiss, no tears, No farewell souvenirs Not even a token, when the spell is broken Don't swear your heart From the very start Love letters you wrote Are pushed back down you throat And leave you choking, when the spell is broken (When the spell, When the spell, When the spell is broken) When the spell is broken When the spell is broken (When the spell, When the spell, When the spell is broken) When the spell is broken When the spell is broken

Richard Thompson - Cooksferry Queen

Well there's a house in an alley In the squats and low-rise Of a town with no future But that's where my future lies It's a secret, but no secret It's a rule, but no rule Where you find the darkest avenue There you'll find the brightest jewel Now my name it is Mulvaney And I'm known quite famously People speak my name in whispers What higher praise can there be But I'd trade my fine mohair For tied-dyes and faded jeans If she wanted me some other way She's my Cooksferry Queen She gave me one pill to get bigger She gave me one pill to get small I saw snakes dancing all around her feet And dead men coming throught the wall Well I'm the prince of this parish I've been ruthless and I've been mean But she blew my mind as she opened my eyes She's my Cooksferry Queen Yeaaaaah Well she's got every rare perfection All her looks beyond compare She's got dresses that seem to float in the wind Pre-Raphaelite curls in her hair She could get the lame to walking She could get the blind to see She could make wine out of Thames river water She could make a believer out of me Yes I'd trade it all tomorrow All the wicked things I've been She's my bright jewel of the alley She's my Cooksferry Queen Yes I'd trade it all tomorrow All the wicked things I've been She's my bright jewel of the alley She's my Cooksferry Queen Oooooh

Richard Thompson - Sibella

Oh some girls hold the ace, the deuce, the trey X-ray the deck to see what's coming Mary Antoinette she smiled that way Easy to smile when the luck is running Like a myth you rode in from the west From the go you had my button pressed Did the tea-time of your soul Make you long for wilder days? Did you never let Jack Kerouac Wash over you in waves? Sibella, we don't make sense together But my heart's with you Sibella, I found myself Strange but true, strange but true Some say you can learn a lot from books Thrill right to second-hand living Life is just as deadly as it looks But fiction is more forgiving You took chances well within your means Salon hair and creases in your jeans All those lonely winters long Did you really think it through Did you really ache for me like I really ached for you Sibella, we don't make sense together But my heart's with you Sibella, I found myself Strange but true, strange but true Sibella, we don't make sense together But my heart's with you Sibella, I found myself Strange but true, strange but true Strange but true, strange but true Strange but true
Richard Thompson Blackleg Miner

An English folk song, of unknown authorship. Written somewhere between the late 1800s and early 1900s. The term "blackleg" is older slang meaning "scab". There was a great hostility among the unionized miners towards anyone who chose to cross their striking lines. This song is from Richard Thompson's 1000 Years Of Popular Music. While I have not heard the album in it's entirety, I have seen the show (with my mother) and found it to be extremely educational as well as musically stunning. Mr Thompson takes us through the centuries of various musical cultures.
Richard Thompson - The Money Shuffle (from "Live At Celtic Connections" DVD & Blu-ray)

Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce the release on 30 / 31 January 2012 of the "Live At Celtic Connections" DVD and Blu-ray from Richard Thompson. Undoubtedly one of the finest British guitarists and songwriters of the last 40 years, Thompson's very loyal fanbase has faithfully followed him from his early Fairport Convention days in the late sixties and early seventies and throughout his eclectic solo career, with many new fans joining along the way. The Blu-ray release is Thompson's first ever on that format. The Mirror said, "In the guitar god firmament, Thompson easily takes a place beside Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. He has certainly been the most consistently imaginative English plank spanker of modern times." Filmed in January 2011 at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow as part of the annual Celtic Connections festival, this release captures a superb performance by The Richard Thompson Band. The first half of the show focuses on Thompson's latest "Dream Attic" album with the second half given over to songs reaching back as far as his first solo album "Henry The Human Fly" and up to recent releases such as "Sweet Warrior" and "The Old Kit Bag". Thompson's distinctive voice and unmistakeable guitar style are well to the fore and his band are as good as it gets. This will be a must-have purchase for any Richard Thompson fan. As Bonus Features we also include two tracks filmed at the 2011 Cambridge Folk Festival: "Uninhabited Man" and "Johnny's Far Away ...

Richard Thompson - Dad's Gonna Kill Me

Band: Richard Thompson Song: Dad's Gonna Kill Me Album: Sweet Warrior [2007] From: England Out in the desert there's a soldier lying dead, Vultures picking the eyes out of his head. Another day that coulda been me there instead Nobody loves me here, Nobody loves me here. Dad's gonna kill me. Dad's gonna kill me. You hear the booby trap and you're in pieces With every bullet your risk increases. Old Ali Baba, he's a different species. Nobody loves me here, Nobody loves me here. Dad's gonna kill me. Dad's gonna kill me. I'm dead meat in my humvee frankenstein, I hit the road block, God knows I never hit the mine But that's alright - I got lucky this time. And Dad's gonna kill me. Dad's gonna kill me. I got a wife and kid - Another on the way. I might get home if I can live through today. Before I came out here I never used to pray. Nobody loves me here, Nobody loves me here. Dad's gonna kill me. Well Dad's in a bad mood, Dad's got the blues. It's someone elses mess that I didn't choose. At least we're winning on the fox evening news. Nobody loves me here, Nobody loves me here. Dad's gonna kill me. Dad's gonna kill me. Dawn Patrol went out and didn't come back Hug the wire and pray like I told you, Mac Or they'll shovelling bits of you into a sack. And Dad's gonna kill me. Dad's gonna kill me. And who's that stranger walking in my dreams, Who's that stranger cast a shadow cross my heart? And who's that stranger I dare speak his name, Must be old Death a-walkin', Must be old ...

Richard Thompson - Turning of the Tide

How many boys, one night stands, How many lips, how many hands, have held you Like I'm holding you tonight Too many nights, staying up late, Too much powder and too much paint No you can't hide from the turning of the tide Did they run their fingers up and down your shabby dress Did they find some tender moment there in your caress The boys all say "You look so fine" They don't come back for a second time Oh you can't hide from the turning of the tide Poor little sailor boy, never set eyes on a woman before Did he tell you that he'd love you, darling, for evermore? Pretty little shoes, cheap perfume, Creaking bed in a hotel room Oh you can't hide from the turning of the tide Did they run their fingers up and down your shabby dress Did they find some tender moment there in your caress The boys all say "You look so fine", They don't come back for a second time Oh you can't hide from the turning of the tide
Richard Thompson - Waltzing for Dreamers

Oh play me a blue song and fade down the light I'm sad as a proud man can be sad tonight Just let me dream on, oh just let me sway While the sweet violins and the saxophones play And Miss, you don't know me, but can't we pretend That we care for each other, till the band reach the end One step for aching, and two steps for breaking Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love One step for sighing and two steps for crying Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love Now they say love's for gamblers, oh the pendulum swings I bet hard on love and I lost everything So don't send me home now, put a shot in my arm And we'll drink out old memories and we'll drink in the dawn And Mr Bandleader won't you play one more time For I've good folding money in this pocket of mine Oh, one step for aching, two steps for breaking Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love One step for sighing, and two steps for crying Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love Oh Miss, you don't know me, but can't we pretend That we care for each other, till the band reach the end Oh, one step for aching, two steps for breaking Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love One step for sighing, two steps for crying Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love
Bonnie Raitt & Richard Thompson - Dimming of the Day

This old house is falling down around my ears Im drowning in the river of my tears When all my will is gone you hold me sway I need you at the dimming of the day You pulled me like the moon pulls on the tide You know just where I keep my better side What days have come to keep us far apart A broken promise or a broken heart Now all the bonny birds have wheeled away I need you at the dimming of the day Come the night youre only what I want Come the night you could be my confidant I see you on the street in company Why dont you come and ease your mind with me Im living for the night we steal away I need you at the dimming of the day I need you at the dimming of the day
Richard Thompson Guitar School (1/3)

Rare instructional video for guitar players, hosted by extremely accomplished musician Richard Thompson. Also featured in the video are Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones and Michael Schenker of UFO and Scorpions fame. I found this video very useful when I was starting out myself because of how it teaches you the very basics of guitar anatomy, tuning and open chords as well as interesting techniques for the left and right hand, scales and more. Excuse the quality; the film was rescued from an old VHS tape, so withered in fact that I had to splice it together with tape. Swedish subtitles.

Richard Thompson Calvary Cross live

A legendary, near-mythical song, the creation of which was probably tied in with the religious awakening he experienced during the mid-1970s (albeit not an awakening of the Christian variety). The great man has always been reluctant to discuss it, but - as always - his guitar speaks volumes. Stunning.
