"Gervais Is A Twittering, Wittering Halfwit" Always worth a listen, the "The Week with George Galloway" radio show discusses the relevant news issues of the week. In this clip, George speaks to Francesca Martinez about comedian Ricky Gervais. Gervais recently managed to offend many people when he had tossed out a reference to "mong" on Twitter and, when challenged, defended and aggressively reused it on the basis that the word had evolved from its original meaning and was no longer a term of abuse for disabled people. But anyone who is disabled or who knows someone with a disability knows what that word means because they will have heard it used about them abusively at some stage. Along with "retard" and "spaz", it's a prominent verbal feature of the bullies' toolkit. I'm 36 and I know it. Ricky Gervais is 50, so he will definitely know it & wasn't it Gervais who tried tackling the issue in an episode of Extras in which a boy with Down's syndrome is referred to as a "mongoloid" ? Ms Martinez herself holds strong views on this as she has cerebral palsy. Interesting listen... But to be fair to Gervais, after he was confronted by a Down's syndrome group and a mother of two disabled children, he did relent & apologise. Well, that at least is something.
