SFGMC - USS Metaphor: "The Navy Knows"

In May of 2007, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus premiered "USS Metaphor," their adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore" and a skewering take on the US military's discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Encore presentations took place in February and July of 2008. In this scene, as Honorable Secretary of the Navy and presidential candidate Josephine Porter continues her inspection of the USS Metaphor, she looks for one of the Navy's top men to interview. Ensign Ralph Rackstraw chooses to sing his answer, with the help of the Metaphor crew. 78s - Vernon Dalhart - Oh, Dem Golden Slippers - Original Version

One of the best songs ever recorded by the one and only Vernon Dalhart. I had posted this one before, but the speed was way too fast so I had deleted it. Someone asked for it again, so here is the original version I posted. I also found yet another version on the Victor scroll label that I will get on here tomorrow. I've got a lot of his records now, and I plan to post them all. Enjoy! Here's some info on Mr. Dalhart: Dalhart was born Marion Try Slaughter in Marion County, Jefferson, Texas. He took his stage-name from two towns, Vernon and Dalhart in Texas, between which he punched cattle in the 1890s. (Decades later, Conway Twitty would derive his stage name through the same method.) Dalhart's father, Robert Marion Slaughter was killed in a fight with his brother-in-law, Bob Castleberry, when Vernon was age 10. When Vernon was 12 or 13, the family moved from Jefferson to Dallas, Texas. Vernon, who already could play the jew's harp and harmonica, received vocal training at the Dallas Conservatory of Music. He married Sadie Lee Moore-Livingston in 1901 and had two children, a son and a daughter. Around 1910 the family moved to New York City. He found employment in a piano warehouse and took occasional singing jobs. One of his first roles was in Giacomo Puccini's opera Girl of the Golden West; following this he played the part of Ralph Rackstraw in a production of HMS Pinafore. He also played the part of Lieutenant Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly. Professional career He saw ...
