Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley, OM (6 February 1945 -- 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter and musician. He was the rhythm guitarist and lead singer for the ska, rocksteady and reggae band Bob Marley & The Wailers (1963--1981). Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited with helping spread both Jamaican music and the Rastafari movement to a worldwide audience. "Redemption Song" is the last track on Bob Marley and the Wailers' ninth Island music album, Uprising. At the time he wrote the song, circa 1979, Marley already had been diagnosed with the cancer that later was to take his life. According to Rita Marley, "he was already secretly in a lot of pain and dealt with his own mortality, a feature that is clearly apparent in the album, particularly in this song". February 6th 1945 is the day that has been "unofficially" assigned as Robert Nesta Marley's earthday. The true day of his earthday has never been known. His first issued passport lists his earthday as April 6th 1945, but Ms Cedella Marley Booker (Bob's mother) remembers to the best of her recollection, him being born two months earlier to the day (February - Tribe of Yoseph), but having took many weeks to travel to the nearest registrar to officially record his birth. As yet, no birth certificate has been produced to officially mark the exact date of his earthday... this in itself has led some Rastafarians to believe in the divinity of Bob's birth "Him was de inheritor of Jah's legacy, him cyan't die, cause him nah born, Rasta nuh fear death, because Rasta never live, an' never die"...
