Elite British security teams took to the River Thames as part of a massive security rehearsal to foil terror disaster at the Olympics. Scotland Yard and the Royal Marines are joining forces for a string of "familiarisation exercises" to avoid catastrophe in London this summer. The Metropolitan Police's Marine Policing Unit and army members will provide a rare glimpse of Britain's top secret security plan as they take to the water. The drills "are designed to make sure that everyone has the same level of knowledge about how the river operates and how our tactics work together," police said. Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison, head of the force's security operation for the Games, said: "All of our planning is designed to mitigate against potential risks during the summer of 2012, and this is an example of where we will be using specialist military capability to support us. "This exercise is not in response to any specific threat, but is part of our planning to pre-deploy certain specialist assets to bolster our operation. "This will be a summer like no other in London. The Thames runs through the very heart of our capital and will be a popular place for people who want to be part of the Olympic spirit. This is all part of our planning to ensure this summer's events take place safely and securely." An inquest has returned a verdict of suicide on a Royal Marine found hanged at his home in London in 2009. Dylan Kemp, a 28-year-old member of 42 Commando Royal Marines, was found dead in his flat in Croydon, south London in September 2009. The inquest heard he was one of 90% of troops who did not have a welfare interview within the 12-week guideline. But Coroner Roy Palmer told Croydon Coroner's Court the Royal Marines did all they could do to support him. Mne Kemp wrote in a suicide note that he had "too much anger". He was found dead in his flat two days after being charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Since returning home he was also arrested over an alleged road-rage attack. Patrick Roche, representing Mne Kemp's mother, Mary Kemp, told Croydon Coroner's Court that despite leaving Afghanistan in April 2009, he had not gone through a Post-Operational Stress Management interview before his death. Mr Roche asked Warrant Officer Andrew MacFarlane, the discipline warrant officer for 42 Commando, why Mne Kemp had not been interviewed five months after his return. He replied: "Possibly because no-one knew where he was." Mne Kemp had joined the Armed Forces Careers Office and was based in London. WO MacFarlane said in his evidence that at the time 90% of marines missed the 12-week mark. "We try to interview - to capture - everyone within that 12-week period. The Royal Navy has captured 13 Somali pirates on a boat in the Indian Ocean. Royal Marines were part of a NATO-led combined counter-piracy force which intercepted a suspect dhow operating in shipping lanes off the Somali coast. In a dawn operation, RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Fort Victoria joined the USS Carney to try to establish the identity of the boat. They used a Royal Navy Lynx Mark 8 helicopter with Royal Marine maritime snipers who warned the suspects to stop. When it did not stop, Royal Marines in speedboats boarded the vessel and 13 Somali pirates surrendered. They were found on board with a selection of weapons, the Ministry of Defence said. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: "This operation off the coast of Somalia is a clear demonstration of Britain's ability to tackle piracy that threatens our interests. "The Royal Navy and Royal Marines are playing a crucial role in securing and protecting international sea lanes that are vital to global trade." For the past week, Royal Marines from 40 Commando along with US Marines from the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, have been training at a US Marine Corps facility in the searing heat of the Californian desert. The Taunton-based unit has been honing its fighting skills on Exercise Black Alligator at the live firing rifle and artillery ranges at the US Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Centre, near the town of 29 Palms, California - deep in the Mojave Desert. The facilities at the US base allow 40 Commando to fire all the weapons in their arsenal and offer desert training opportunities not available in the UK.

A Royal Marine Commando on a range firing the new Sharpshooter rifle which will improve the long-range firepower available on the front line. It fires 7.62mm rounds and will enhance accuracy of engagement during longer-range firefights. This weapon will be used by some of the best shots in the Infantry. More than 400 of the semi-automatic Sharpshooter rifles have been bought as a £1.5M Urgent Operational Requirement. It is the first new Infantry combat rifle to be issued to troops for more than 20 years. The Sharpshooter complements the already potent range of weapons used by British forces in Afghanistan.
