I've heard conflicting accounts as to which unit these gentlemen belong, ranging from the Royal Marines to the Artillery, but the story is that they were told to land on a beach where the mud was too thick for them to continue. The object was to see whether they would try to carry on or realise their cause was a lost one and make a tactical withdrawal. Either way, enjoy.
