sumatra rspb

In the past few decades, Sumatra's lowland forests have shrunk dramatically, from 16 million hectares in 1900 to just 500000-600000 hectares today. Harapan Rainforest is a forest under threat, and if we don't act now, this rainforest and its amazing wildlife will be gone in five years. Our ambitious project to restore habitat of this scale and importance is not a task undertaken lightly - but with your help and our expertise it can be saved

Farm Stay Yorkshire Series - RSPB Bempton Cliffs

www.farmstay.co.uk Some call Yorkshire 'God's own county,' and the four remarkable places to stay featured in this video, close to the dramatic 400ft cliffs at the RSPB's Bempton Cliffs reserve, demonstrate why. The series features great places to visit and takes us off the beaten track to find unique overnight stops that will have you deserting anonymous hotel chains for good! This episode focuses on the East Riding. Its famous coastline has long drawn visitors to resorts like Scarborough and Bridlington but there is much more to it than that which is amply illustrated in our selection of farms offering B&B's, holiday cottages and one that also features wooden wigwams. They are all in easy reach of the sights and sounds - if not the smells - of one of the best places to view seabirds in the country. Arne RSPB reserve part 2

This is part two of the Arne RSPB nature reserve videos filmed at Arne, Dorset, UK. This time there is no music track - instead I left the audio as the camera recorded it so you could hear the bird calls, the sounds of trees rustling in the breeze and of course the sounds of the rutting Sika Deer. (and the odd word by yours truly the bloke behing the camera) Anyway, as I have said before this RSPB reserve is well worth visiting as I guarantee you will see something different every visit. Situated on the Isle Of Purbeck this reserve encompasses pretty much every habitat and landscape type that is found in UK (with the obvious exception of mountains, highlands etc) In a short walk you can see beech & oak woodland, coniferous pine woods, coastal shoreline, estuary, marshland, bog, meadows, beach, heathland and farmland which is part of the farm owned by the RSPB. Hope you enjoy watching and listening to this video. (It sounds ok on headphones).

Wildwood's wild horses arrive at RSPB Loch of Strathbeg reserve

An Aberdeenshire nature reserve has drafted in a herd of rare wild horses in a bid to maintain its habitat. Konik horses are being used at the RSPB's Loch of Strathbeg site, between Peterhead and Fraserburgh, to harness the wildlife benefits of their grazing. Koniks cope with harsh climates while foraging. This will save vegetation being artificially stripped away. The breed is descended from the Tarpan horse which roamed Britain in prehistoric times. Dominic Funnell, site manager at RSPB Loch of Strathbeg, said: "Koniks love eating rank tussocky vegetation and we have lots of it at Strathbeg. Koniks are said to be good news for geese, swans, ducks and wading birds "Currently we have to strip it away to ensure our wetlands remain in top condition. "But now, thanks to the grazing habits of these horses, we can ditch the machines and get back to an 'au naturel' approach to habitat management." He added: "It's great news for the geese, swans, ducks and wading birds, like lapwings and curlew, who need wetlands to feed and breed, and it means we will have more time to concentrate on other conservation work. "These horses will be doing an important job for us so, to make sure they're not disturbed, they'll be working on the less public areas of the reserve. "Visitors will be able to see them distantly and be able to hear more about their work in the visitor centre and on the reserve website." 'More for less' Before their arrival, the eight horses were under the care of the ...

RSPB Nature's Voice Podcast April 2011

http:/www.rspb.org.uk/podcasts RSPB Nature's Voice has been published as an audio podcast for more than four years. This is the first time it's been published with pictures! The RSPB's reserve at Arne on the Dorset coast boasts all six of the UK's reptiles. On this podcast meet the season's first baby smooth snake with Rob Farrington and Paul Morton who work there and have many more than six good reasons to join them on the reserve. We hear from members at the volunteers weekend about what they'll be doing to take part in the Stepping Up For Nature campaign.

PUFFINS AT RSPB BEMPTON CLIFFS by Annette Pyrah

It's April 2010 and the birds are back in town. They have flocked to the high cliffs at Flamborough in their thousands. Gannets, puffins, Fulmars, Guillemots, Razor Bills, to name but a few. Busy building their nests, the birds, take grass and mud from the hill side whilst others participate in making babies. Puffins continue to delight and enthrall visitors to Bempton. I only wish there was smell-a-vision. The noise, smells and sights are a wonder to behold. If you love nature and especially seabirds, Bempton is worth a visit. Recommended eatery in Flamborough itself is "The North Star" who serve fantastic meals. In Whitby there's the famous Magpie Cafe, but back to Bempton and there is an Ethical Food catering van outside the Visitor Centre. Also two feeding stations. Plenty of car parking, helpful and friendly wardens and a great bunch of regular visitors and photographers.

RSPB Loch Garten - 2009 Season Finale

This is my own 'finale' sequence - whilst the ospreys have not completely left, it will only be a matter of time. After all the technical issues with the webcam were resolved, it has been more tricky to record footage... however, hopefully this will come some way to a record of recent events. I am entirely in debt to the RSPB for the video footage. As always, if you have not considered a donation, no matter how small, please help the RSPB to continue the good work they do.. www.rspb.org.uk The music for this video is an instrumental track by Joe Satriani, one of the best rock guitarists around at present, playing 'If I could fly' from his 2004 album 'Is there love in space?'. The music was sourced on YouTube and consequently I do not consider it an infringement of copyright to utilise audio that already exists on a freely available site. Furthermore, no infringement of copyright is intended. Please visit www.satriani.com for more details on Joe Satriani and his music..
