Russia: WTO mission accomplished

www.euronews.net The World Trade Organisation makes a tongue in cheek gesture to celebrate Russia getting to the next step in their membership bid. Russia has effectively wrapped up 18 years of talks on joining the 153 member institution after agreeing terms with the EU. Cold war adversary Georgia could have vetoed Moscow's entry but instead accepted a Swiss border proposal, arising from a conflict with Russia in 2008. Chairman of WTO working group for Russian accession Stefan Johannesson declared:

On The Money: Welcome to WTO

How will Russia and the WTO match up? Will the WTO membership benefit big Russian exporters at the expense of Russian small businesses? Will tougher competition motivate Russian companies to raise their standards, or will a wave of foreign goods actually endanger the existence of some local companies? And will Russians notice the WTO's impact on the economy? OtM is joined by Yaroslav Lisovolik, Anatoliy Miliukov and Nick Pool. www.facebook.com

Content: Russia is planning to join the World Trade Organization by the summer time. This accession is needed to strengthen Russia's position in the international market and receive the right to participate in shaping international trade rules. Russian authorities are promising to protect the interests of domestic producers. However, some experts say that joining the organization will lead to a partial loss of the country's sovereignty and a weakening of its economy. [Maxim Kalashnikov, Russian Blogger]: "Joining the WTO is a deep political issue. It will compromise the sovereignty of our country. This is a rejection of freedom in times of acute international crisis, when in need of national revival and re-industrialization." In order to fulfil the basic requirements of the WTO, Russia will be reducing taxes on imported and exported goods, which will lead to an increase of foreign goods in the market. Experts say it could lead to a drop in domestic production and in the country's number of manufactures. WTO = Waiting Time Over

Russia has been officially welcomed to the World Trade Organization, after nearly two decades of talks. The long-anticipated accession will be a boon for some industries, but is likely to hit tough on others, so Russians greet it with mixed feelings. Russia reaches next step for WTO inclusion

www.euronews.net The last obstacle for Russia's candidacy to become a member of the world trade organisation has been overcome. After introducing laws in line with WTO's rules, the other existing 153 members agreed to put the country's inclusion to a vote in December. Georgia has opposed Moscow's joining for the last three years due to a territorial dispute which lead to armed conflict in 2008. Russia plans to join the WTO's voluntary agreement on government procurement and will initiate negotiations for membership within four years of joining the WTO.

'Fingers crossed for Russia to join WTO ASAP'

RT's Sophie Shevardnadze interviews President of Finland Tarja Halonen. Russia joining the World Trade Organization would help boost Europe's economy as a whole, and especially those of its neighbors. Finnish president Tarja Halonen says her country is very interested Russia joining WTO as soon as possible. "We have a lot of trade between Finland and Russia, so we hope that it will be a member of WTO. Then certain issues will go away from our table. It's clearer to work under the same regulations. We are keeping the fingers that everything will happen very soon," she said. "You can guess from my smile that as a president of Finland, I hope in both ways and I'm happy also that Russia started to invest in Finland. We hope also to have some new jobs in Finland. The world is for the globalization, I hope for the globalization. The WTO membership will make the situation much clearer and that's why we are strongly for that." According to Halonen, one of the potential areas of co-operation between Russia and Finland could be energy efficiency. "I think we should speak about renewable energy resources. I have noticed that all over the world those countries with classical energy resources have been interested to work with us to make new ideas how to get renewable energy from sun, wind, sea and whatever you might mention. Then there is something that we know well, so-called clean technology, and we are interested to share our experiences," she said. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com ...

WTO sees trade growth falling

www.euronews.com The growth of trade worldwide is set to slow down for the second year running according to the World Trade Organisation. In the WTO's annual forecast it says the main risks are of a deeper than expected recession in the eurozone, a worsening sovereign debt crisis, higher oil prices, and geopolitical risks. Director General Pascal Lamy told reporters: "We again found ourselves with conflicting economic developments, portending either a continued crisis or slightly better times ahead." World trade growth is predicted to slow to 3.7 percent this year, that is down from last year's five percent growth and way down on 2010's record of 13.8 percent. In 2013 trade growth is expected to pick up to 5.6 percent. The WTO says how this year goes is largely dependent on the seemingly diverging fortunes of the world's top two trading powers - that is Europe and the United States. The trade organisation's economists see a slump in exports of goods from developed countries this year. Exports from developing countries, a grouping that includes Russia, are expected to improve slightly from last year's levels.
