Record-breaking marathoner Ryan Hall sits down with Matt Dixon, an elite triathlon coach and owner of PurplePatch Fitness in the San Francisco area, to talk about what really makes the difference when it comes to improving performance at the elite level. Matt thinks metabolic health is the key to great achievements in endurance sport. Training for your main sport isn't the only aspect of performance training, though - your program must include nutrition, recovery, and functional strength training, stresses Matt, who advises that every athlete have a "North star" for what they want to achieve. Once you have that goal, you can build a training plan. Volume is secondary to specificity in training, Matt says. Similarly, focusing too much on weight rather than nutrition - both what you eat to stay healthy and how you fuel your workouts - is a mistake. Functional strength is also important, as is prioritizing recovery. All four pillars, says Matt, should have equal importance in your training. Do these things, and you'll show up at the starting line both fit and fresh.
