Santeria - Cuba

Nov 2003 More and more Cubans are turning to the popular religion of Santeria for spiritual guidance. In the tiny Cuban town of Regla, a woman is throwing a party for her saint. She watches in delight as her 'saint' writhes to the drums, spitting rum at the guests to cleanse their souls. Santeria was bought to Cuba by African slaves and quickly developed into a home-grown religion. Now 80% of the population are thought to believe in it. Santeria

Santeria (or La Regla Lucumi or Regla de Ocha) is an Afro-Cuban religion that combines the traditional belief systems of the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria and Benin with elements of Catholicism. It arose in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when the slave trade brought many of these people to the shores of Cuba, Brazil, Haiti, Trinidad and Puerto Rico. The slaves were expected to adopt the Catholic religion, which they did, but with a twist: they incorporated the Saints among their traditional deities or Orisha (Oricha). "Santería is based upon the development of personal relationships through divination, sacrifice, initiation, and mediumship between practitioners of the religion and the Orisha deities, who provide their devotees with protection, wisdom, and success and who guide devotees in times of crisis. Most Ifáconsultations prescribe some form of sacrifice to one or several of the Orishas. These offerings may range from simple presentations before home altars to elaborate feasts in the Orishas' honour." The illustrations of this video are from a set of seventeen lithographs of Orisha by Alberto del Pozo from about the 1980s, courtesy of University of Miami Digital Libraries. Visual artist Alberto del Pozo (1945-1992) was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. With his parents, he was exiled to the United States in 1961. He attended Coral Gables High School in Miami and Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. From 1970 to 1975, he worked as ...

SANTERIA , "YEAR OF THE KNIFE" (LOUISIANA) - Brother Dege

SONG: "YEAR OF THE KNIFE" from the album Year of the Knife (2008) ARTIST: SANTERIA (Brother Dege Legg, Primo, Krishna Kasturi, Chad Willis) BIO: Born in the murky swamplands of Louisiana and comprised of members from the India to the backwoods of the Deep South, Santeria was birth in 1994. For 10 years, they defied expectations by releasing three exceptional records (Santeria in 1998, Apocalypse, Louisiana in 2000, and House of the Dying Sun in 2002) on their own label (GolarWash Labs) while banging out hundreds of gigs in Nowheresville towns across America. By some miracle or supernatural force, they somehow retooled the basics of southern rock and modified it into a new and inspired form—relatively free of Confederate clichés and beer guzzling drunkenness - concentrating their creative energies on expressing the isolation and loneliness of the modern south - at times loud and overbearing and alternately quiet, subdued, and withdrawn. Rumored to have been cursed by voodoo practitioners upset at the band appropriating the name Santeria, the band soldiered on through countless setbacks—freakish car crashes, cow hearts stuff in their mailboxes, knife and gun fights, eviction from their band house, paranoia, mental illness, police harassment, and numerous unexplained phenomena. In 2002, they caught a break by hooking up with 4x Grammy Award winning producer, Tony Daigle (Sonny Landreth, Dr. John, Gatemouth Brown), to record the critically acclaimed House of the Dying Sun ...

Tribo de Jah- Santeria (cover)

Best Reggae band from Brazil. From Brazil Tribo De Jah About tribo de jah Once upon a time not so very long ago, a group of young men met each other deep in the wilds of Brazil at the Maranhão School for the Blind. Four of them totally without any sight, the fifth only partially seeing. Their mutual love of music brought them together, and they began to develop their passion for music by creating instruments whenever they could and by discovering the tunes that floated in their heads and all around them everyday. After long, hard, and constant practice they became proficient enough to begin playing at popular dances, playing their own particular brand of Brazilian rhythms like 'serensta' and 'lambada' until one day they discovered the heartbeating rhythm of reggae. The reggae culture had become an unexplained phenomenon in Maranhão State, first invading its ghettos then proceeding to take over the whole interior of the state and beyond its borders, just as the music had around the world. During this time broadcaster 'Fauzi' Beydoun, who had been born in Sao Paulo to Italian-Lebanese parents, had returned to Brazil from the Ivory Coast of Africa with the rhythm of reggae pounding in his heart. As God would have it, Fauzi came across the others playing at a small club and he was greatly affected by the culture that had sprung up around the group and its music. Joining forces, Fauzi & Tribo De Jah decided to take on the world. It was also during this time that the group ...
