SETI Talks Archive: seti.org Iapetus is historically the most intriguing satellite of Saturn because of its color dichotomy. A major advance in the understanding of the origin of the dichotomy has come recently from two fundamental pieces of information. The first was the discovery by Verbiscer et al. (2009) of a ring of dark material that originates in the Phoebe's neighborhood and spirals down to Iapetus collecting on its leading side. The second fundamental piece of information comes from thermal modeling of Iapetus' surface. This has demonstrated that the darkening of the leading side results in a temperature rise of a few degrees on that hemisphere of Iapetus. Consequently, the higher temperature causes the H2O ice to sublimate and effectively migrate to cooler regions of the surface making them brighter and colder. A variation in the color of the dark material in different regions of the surface of Iapetus has also been reported, suggesting differing properties possibly related to the nature and origin of the material. Dr. Dalle Ore used a statistical tool to explore a mosaic of 30 spectral image cubes of a portion of the surface of Iapetus observed in 2007 with the Cassini Visible-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS). She has identified the spectroscopic signature of the dark materials and she will compare it to the spectra of dark materials detected on the surface of other satellites in the Saturn system to trace their theoretically predicted origin.

An avalanche in Annapurna Mountain Range triggers massive flood in Seti River in Pokhara on Saturday Morning (5th May 2012). The Seti River viciously came to life in Pokhara with full force that swept nearby settlements, villages and even vehicles. Two picnic bus carrying students have also been swept away. The disaster also swept away four trucks at Bhujrung Khola of Kaski. So far at least 14 people are said to have perished in the flood with over 50 missing. Settlements on river banks have been evacuated by the Nepal Police and Nepal Army foreseeing the possible threat. The flood that has taken everyone by surprise is believed to have been caused by an avalanche upstream, deep in the Annapurna mountains. God bless Pokhara.!!

The myriad internal surfaces aboard ISS and the various crew compartments on drawing boards today are viewed as a liability due to contamination and fouling. Yet, if such surfaces operate synergistically with life support systems, these same surfaces become an asset with practically no increased load weight penalty. Virtually all of these surfaces are coated. Bio-based, non-toxic additives to such coatings, many of which are already being marketed for 1XG applications, will create the functionalized surfaces needed.

The idea is to store the oxidizer as a liquid and the fuel as a solid producing a design that is immune to large-scale chemical explosion. The fuel is contained within the combustion chamber in the form of a cylinder with one or more channels called ports hollowed out along its axis. Combustion takes place between vaporized oxidizer flowing through the ports and fuel evaporating from the solid surface. While the hybrid rocket enjoys many safety and environmental advantages over conventional systems, large hybrid rockets have not been commercially viable. The reason is that traditional systems use polymeric fuels that evaporate too slowly making it difficult to produce the high thrust needed for most applications. To compensate, the surface area for burning must be increased, and as the size of a hybrid rocket increases the number of required ports also increases leading to poor volumetric loading and poor fuel structural characteristics. Recent research at Stanford University has led to the development of a class of paraffin-based fuels that burn at surface regression rates that are several times that of conventional polymeric fuels. These new fuels form a thin, hydro-dynamically unstable liquid layer on the melting surface of the fuel grain. SETI Talks archive: seti.org Fullerenes are a class of large and remarkably stable carbonaceous molecules in the shape of a hollow sphere or ellipsoid; the best known member of the class is the archetypical "buckminsterfullerene" C60 that resembles a soccer ball (and is therefore often called "buckyball"). Dr. Cami and colleagues have recently discovered the unmistakable spectral signatures of the fullerene species C60 and C70 in Spitzer observations of a young planetary nebula, and these are now the largest molecules known to exist in space. Since this discovery, fullerenes have been reported in a wide variety of astronomical objects at abundances of typically 0.1—1.5% of the cosmic carbon. They are formed in carbon-rich evolved stars, survive in the interstellar medium and are also detected in the disks surrounding young stars. Fullerenes have many interesting properties and could play a unique role in the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium. In this talk, Dr. Cami will give an overview of what we have learned so far from observational analyses, with a special focus on the surprising aspects that have challenged our understanding of some of the physics and chemistry involved -- in particular about the formation and the state of fullerenes in space.

SETI Talks archive: seti.org One of major advances of string theory in recent years was an understanding that vacuum solutions with potentially viable four-dimensional cosmology come in a plethora of an incredibly large and rich 'landscape' of string theory vacua. The number of possible vacua and, in turn, types of Universes, may exceed 10 to the power 1000. This progress was enabled by finding ways to give mass to ('stabilize') the moduli. The moduli are the typically 100 to 1000 massless scalar fields which are associated with deformations of extra dimensions required by string theory. Moduli stabilization also gave rise to the first well-controlled string theory constructions of cosmological inflation, a very early burst of exponential expansion of the universe needed to produce its large scale and spatial flatness. Inflation seeds density perturbations, which are the source of all visible structure in our universe, as well as gravitational wave fluctuations. If the gravitational wave fluctuations are seen (eg by the PLANCK satellite), this would tell us that inflation took place at an energy scale only 100 times belowPlanck scale of quantum gravity and maybe string theory itself. We may then hope for leftover imprints from the fundamental theory in high-scale inflation. SETI Talks archive: seti.org We have numerically explored the obliquity variations of a hypothetical moonless Earth using a range of initial conditions and extending our calculations for up to 4 billion years. We find that while obliquity varies significantly more than that of the actual Earth over 100000 year timescales, the obliquity remains within a constrained range, typically 20-25 degrees in extent, for timescales of hundreds of millions of years. Retrograde planets' obliquities are more stable than that of the real Earth. So having a large moon may not be needed for a planet to be habitable.

He also discusses several techniques for the detection of circumbinary planets (CBP, planets that circle two stars at once). This involves detection by transits (which in the case of CBP produce a quasi-periodic signal), eclipsing binary (EB) timing, dynamical timing of EBs, and a new detection technique called the "eclipse echo" EE method. With all these acronyms the detection of CBP around EBs with the EE method should make NASA happy. : )

No one knows for sure what caused this signal. There is a slight possibility that it just might originate from an extraterrestrial intelligence. The bright colors on the blue background indicate that an anomalous signal was received here on Earth by a radio telescope involved in a Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). A search for these signals is ongoing by several groups including volunteer members of the SETI League. Time labels the vertical axis of the above plot, and frequency marks the horizontal axis. Although this strong signal was never positively identified, astronomers have identified in it many attributes characteristic of a more mundane and ultimately terrestrial origin. In this case, a leading possibility is that the signal originates from an unusual modulation between a GPS satellite and an unidentified Earth-based source. Many unusual signals from space remain unidentified. No signal has yet been strong enough or run long enough to be unambiguously identified as originating from an extraterrestrial intelligence.

It is now known that the composition of the Moon is too similar to Earth's mantle to be derived from the impactor, seriously questioning the giant impact theory. However, this is a problem only if we assume that little or no angular momentum was lost from the system since its formation. While lunar tides keep the angular momentum in the system, certain resonances can transfer angular momentum to Earth's heliocentric orbit. These resonances are important if the Earth-Moon system formed with a much larger angular momentum, and can evolve the system to the present state. Dr. Cuk will show how it is likely that the Moon likely formed in a impact-triggered fission different from the "classical" giant impact scenario.
