History of Albania Albanians call their country Shqipëria, and trace their roots to the ancient Illyrian tribes. Their language is descended from Illyrian, making it a rare survivor of the Roman and Slavic influxes and a European linguistic oddity on a par with Basque. The Illyrians occupied the western Balkans during the 2nd millennium BC. They built substantial fortified cities, mastered silver and copper mining and became adept at sailing the Mediterranean. The Greeks arrived in the 7th century BC to establish self-governing colonies at Epidamnos (now Durrës), Apollonia and Butrint. They traded peacefully with the Illyrians, who formed tribal states in the 4th century BC. Inevitably the expanding Illyrian kingdom of the Ardiaei, based at Shkodra, came into conflict with Rome, which sent a fleet of 200 vessels against Queen Teuta in 229 BC. A long war resulted in the extension of Roman control over the entire Balkan area by 167 BC. Under the Romans, Illyria enjoyed peace and prosperity, though the large agricultural estates were worked by slaves. Like the Greeks, the Illyrians preserved their own language and traditions despite centuries of Roman rule. Over time the populace slowly replaced their old gods with the new Christian faith championed by Emperor Constantine. The main trade route between Rome and Constantinople, the Via Egnatia, ran from the port at Durrës. The Albanian-born soprano Inva Mula will open the Paris Opéras 2009-10 season in the title role of Gounods rarely heard Mireille, a tragic story of farming folk in 19th-century Provence. Two arias from the work feature on this recital alongside favourite extracts from Faust, Thaïs and Manon, demonstrating Mulas credentials as one of the best French sopranos of today (she is Micaëla in the EMI Classics Carmen conducted by Michel Plasson); her achievements in the Italian repertoire are represented by arias from La Traviata, Rigoletto, La Bohème, La Rondine and Gianni Schicchi. Skenderbeu is the Nr 1 Great Albanian in History who did save Albanians from the Turkish Empire and also save the Europeans bums for not being the Turks's children and all Moslyms by now. But Europeans did not help and respect him and Albanians enough for saving their weak European nations from the strong Turkey's Empire.They even did work often against Albanians and pro Turks,to please them. Skenderbeg and Albanians were heroes who did fight and win against 10-20 times bigger armies of the Turks (for 25 years)who try to pass through Albania to occupy,spread,change and dominate all Europe. Somehow crazy Albanians (titans) did destroy the strong Turkish armies and save so the weak Europe.Cud Europeans do that crazy heroism? Never. So they own to crazy Albanians their (present) life, their kingdoms, their religion, their pope, and their civilization. In 1995 the team was renamed KS Olimpik Tirana; in 1997 they returned to their original name. In the 2006--07 first qualifying round for the UEFA Cup the club was eliminated by CSKA Sofia from Bulgaria (1--5 aggregate). Zoran Kastel was the goalscorer. After finishing third in the table in 2005/06, KS Dinamo Tirana named Faruk Sejdini as their new coach. One of Albania's best teachers of footballing fundamentals, he had a spell at the club last term before being dismissed by president Besnik Sulaj. Having returned following a spell at KS Shkumbini, Sejdini said: "It's nice to be back." On October 23, 2006, Faruk Sejdini was fired. The club was founded in the city of Korçë on 15 April 1909 under the name Vllazëria by politician and poet Hilë Mosi, making it the oldest club in Albania. During the years 1920 and 1922 there were football associations made in Korçë for the first time, such as Përparimi and Sport Klub Korça, in 1923 the Shpresa society was founded under the Albanian National Lyceum. But it was not until 1925 that Skënderbeu would be born, as football began to more popular in this city of Albania, almost every field would be used as a football ground for locals to play and enjoy the sport. This lead to many neighbourhoods in Korçës trying to form their own small football teams. In 1926 the Zhgaba society was created, and in 1927 many neighbourhood teams were finally set up, such as Leka i Madh, Pirro, Brekverdhit, Zjarri, Tigri and Diamanti.
