Like its arch-rival, the BMW Z4, this roadster majors on comfort rather than outright performance, but the 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine is responsive, and still offers an impressive turn of speed. The suspension irons out bumps, but switching it to Sport mode stiffens it up to improve cornering performance. The interior is good quality, but the highlight is the optional Magic Sky Control roof, which features special glass that allows the driver to adjust the transparency.

The R170-platform SLK 230 Kompressor was introduced in 1997 for model year 1998 to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3. Setting it apart was its folding hardtop, though its additional weight detracting from the performance of the 185 hp 2.3 L supercharged I4 engine and automatic transmission. The SLK was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 1997. A 5-speed manual transmission was added for 1999 along with the 215 hp 3.2 L V6 and 6-speed manual transmission in the 2001 SLK 320. An AMG model was added in 2001, with a 354 hp (264 kW) supercharged version of the 3.2 L V6. This SLK 32 AMG was the best-performing SLK ever, and was a direct rival of the BMW M Roadster and Porsche Boxster S. It is only offered with automatic transmission. The SLK AMG engine is also hand built. Not all Mercedes SLKs were built in Bremen, Germany, the SLK 320 being built in South Africa. The very first R170 Mercedes SLK was completed on January 29, 1997 and last on April 7, 2004. Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2012 SLK roadster. The most distinguishing feature of the new SLK, now in its third generation, is the panoramic roof with Magic Sky Control, whereby the the transparency of the 'vario-roof' can be changed from light to dark. The new front face of the SLK, with its more upright grill, references the SLS AMG as well as being in keeping with Benz's new design paradigm which is holding to that feature. But the new design still improves on the SLK's drag co-efficient, though - 0.30 compared to the previous model's 0.32. The SLK350 model comes fitted with a new 3.5 liter V6 doling out 302 bhp (225 kW / 306 PS) and powering the SLK to a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) sprint time of 5.4 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph (250 km/h). An SLK250 will be launched later in the year with a 1.8 liter unit producing 201 PS (148 kW). The SLK250 has a respectable 0 to 60 mph sprint time of 6.5 seconds and also features the same top speed as in the V6. R171 represents the second generation of Mercedes-Benz SLK. Compared with the R170, R171 has larger dimensions. The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a luxury roadster built by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. The name was chosen to reflect the company's intentions for the car - that it be Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light), and Kurz (short). There have been two generations of SLK cars from Mercedes-Benz. Like its predecessor, the second generation of the vehicle featured a retractable hardtop. Following the trend initiated by the R170 model, by the time the R171 was released, this had become an increasingly common feature in almost every new convertible introduced in the market, especially in Europe. The SLK was updated in 2004 with a new Formula One-inspired appearance and serious performance; the new model also took design cues from the Mercedes-Benz Vision SLA concept car, presented in 2000. The new Mercedes SLK hits the showroom just in time for summer.Mercedes has been the small SLK roadster for 15 years. That has led many to ask why the carmaker is still selling the SL. The somewhat larger model is 40000 euros more expensive than the SLK, even though it has a similar engine. The SLK 350 has a 3.5-liter engine under the hood, just like the SL 350, but it produces seven kilowatts less power. Still, it can go from zero to 100 kilometers half-a-second more quickly than the SL because it's lighter - so its 370 Newton meters of torque are applied more quickly. So which would you choose?
