Newegg TV: The SSD Tutorial

www.newegg.com | SSD Store bit.ly Looking for an SSD? If it's your first time stepping up from a legacy mechanical hard disk drive (hard drive, or HDD), you may have some questions. What type of connection is ideal? What capacity do I need? Is it better for an operating system installation or just for storage? What's the deal with TRIM? Stay tuned for our SSD tutorial, where you will learn far too much about SSDs for your own good. A warning though: once you start using an SSD-equipped computer, you will never want to wait for a hard drive to spin up again. SSD Program Performance VS. 7200 RPM HDD (Part 3)

I start up various programs to test the performance difference between a SSD and a regular hard disk drive. The reason I didn't reinstall XP on this computer was because it would have straight wasted my time.Windows 7 in my experience doesn't boot any faster than XP did in a fresh install.; usually took longer. Also I used Windows 7 for 2 weeks before I did the speed test; so this was not fresh install performance. Since SSDs don't degrade in performance like regular HDDs then this is the speed you should expect even after months of use. (Programs running aside.) There is a very large difference in performance; I would recommend getting a SSD for your computer. MacBook Pro SSD Upgrade (OCZ Vertex 3)

This video explains the process of upgrading the stock MacBook pro hard drive to an SSD. The SSD used in this install is an OCZ Vertex 3. The stock hard drive was moved to the optical drive bay using an optibay style adapter. Here are some more details on the SSD drive - OCZ Vertex 3 Solid State Drives unleash the performance potential of the SATA 6Gbps interface, leading the speed revolution in this next-generation solution. As the first SSD to feature the latest Sandforce controller design, OCZ designed the Vertex 3 to push the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates to blaze past the competition when every MB/s matters. With incredible 4k file writes up to 85000 IOPS, these latest drives take productivity, gaming, and multimedia applications to the next level to work in perfect symmetry with the latest enthusiast platforms. Built with the quality, reliability, and durability that lives up to the OCZ name, the Vertex 3 Series easily integrates into today's mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive's lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 companion. Vertex 3 SSDs are available in 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB capacities and come backed by a 3-Year Warranty.

OCZ Agility 3 SSD 120GB on a 2009 MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB of Crucial DDR3 1066

Upgraded my 2009 MacBook Pro recently with an SSD Drive as well as 8GB of Crucial DDR3 1066 RAM. Running OSX Lion 10.7.1 this configuration can boot up in 12 seconds. It shuts down in 2 seconds as well! Loading in and out of programs is extremely fast and is demonstrated on Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5 and Final Cut Pro X. These programs typically take forever to launch and manipulate on Core 2 Duo machines, but not with this amount of RAM and the amazing speed of an SSD hard drive. Wives tales suggest limitations on how much RAM the MacBook platforms will recognize. In this case all 8GB is recognized by the operating system. I was able to successfully disable all hard drive swap files as well as hibernation / sleep mode saving additional hard drive space that those features take up. Around 10GB of drive space saved there. This MacBook Pro is a SATA II platform, and the drive supports up to SATA III. This means the drive is future proof and will double in speed if you upgrade to a SATA III supporting model of MacBook Pro! TRIM support can be enabled in OSX Lion 10.7.1 (this is NOT available in Snow Leopard) by following instructions here: www.mactrast.com Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BC1067 www.newegg.com OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) www.newegg.com
