Adapting to climate change in the Sahel

Climate change is felt acutely in the Sahel region, where the population is largely dependant on agriculture and livestock. The 3-4 months of summer rains are vital to survival. If these alter, food shortages and disasters can follow. This film, developed by Christian Aid together with the "Centre Ecologique Albert Schweizer", the "Office de Développement des Eglises Evangéliques", and the "Réseau MARP", shows examples of measures that can be taken to adapt to the changing climate. www.christianaid.org

Food Crisis In Africa's Sahel Region

Drought has returned to the Sahel region of West Africa bringing hunger to millions for the third time in recent years. The quick recurrence of droughts means that people have had little time to recover. Savings are exhausted and livestock herds have not been replenished.

Water and Land in Sahel, The case of Burkina Faso. ITA

This video show the situation about the water and Land in Sahel. In particular show the case of Burkina Faso after Sankara died. After president Sankara's death and after the European interference reaffirmed, water and land are still two valuable resources for daily life. The uninterrupted exploitation carried out by multinationals is only making the problem worse. In 2005 -- 2006 about twenty years after the murder of Thomas Sankara, president of Burkina Faso, author of Burkinabe revolution and one of the most innovative African leaders, people could notice in Sahel some warning signs of a severe famine, such as the one occurred in Burkina Faso during the 70s. Some natural events made worse and worse the availability of resources. The cause is to be searched in agricultural politics carried out by the governments during colonial period and restarted after Thomas Sankara's assassination. Sahel inhabitants have always had a deep relationship with the two main resources for their support: water and land. Since always people interact with these resources through their work, moving and religion. Some parts of the country show important climate and territorial differences, but growers, thanks to their masterly use of agricultural techniques and a careful cultures selection has always got sufficient food resources. Unfortunately when colonial period began, the best lands, rich of water and minerals, started being exploited by private companies for the growth of cotton and ...

Raw Video: Sahel Kazemi's DUI Stop With Steve McNair

Patrol Car Video Shows (McNair's Girlfriend) Sahel Kazemi's DUI Stop With Steve McNair in the passenger seat. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NewsChannel5 Investigates reviewed the tape which shows Kazemi getting arrested and McNair taking a cab home just two days before they died. It all started when police pulled over the Cadillac Escalade on Broadway for going 54 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone. Kazemi was driving with Steve McNair in the passenger seat. After officer Shawn Taylor gets to th More..e window, McNair asked if Officer Taylor remembered him. "You remember me?" asked McNair. "Yep sure do," said Taylor. "Remember me?" They would remember each other because five years earlier Taylor pulled over McNair for DUI, but a judge threw the case out. This time officer Taylor went back to his patrol car and called a fellow officer seemingly surprised by who was in the car. "Guess who is with her? Yep. Drunk as, he's drunk as hell. She's not," said Taylor. Taylor then put Kazemi through field sobriety tests and determines she was impaired. Later police allowed McNair and someone else to get out of the SUV and take a taxi. In the back of the patrol car Kazemi asked for McNair to come over, but he was already gone. "He just left here. I told him and he was more than welcome to come back to the car and talk to you. He chose to get in a taxi and leave," said Taylor. Kazemi later called another friend to come and get the SUV. She then called McNair and asked that he get her out ...

Sahel Food Crisis, help is needed now

For more information: www.ifrc.org/sahel The food crisis in the Sahel is leading to increased humanitarian action by the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. In some parts of the Sahel region of Africa, the rains in 2011/12 have been below average. With malnutrition levels chronically high, the erratic rainfall, drought and damage to crops have taken vulnerable populations beyond their capacity to cope. Rising food and fuel prices, decreasing incomes and migration are all adding to the problem, putting pressure on community reserves and pushing more people into poverty. In response, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched a series of appeals and disaster relief emergency fund contributions.

SAHEL, THE WOUNDED FRONTIER: DJIBOUTI

In spite of the dryness and hopeless view, the Sahara is a territory of immense open lands in which life beats, irrigated by the rivers Senegal, Niger and Nile. Over the centuries, incredible civilizations have emerged here and black and white people, Coptic, Christian, Jews and Muslims, nomadic shepherds, fishermen and sedentary farmers have all cohabited. We travel across this land to narrate the stories of the men and women at Sahel, their trials for survival at the verge of desertification and the falling of their ancestral way of life.

The Warrior - Scenarios from the Sahel

A young warrior who loves his country hears about the devastation being caused by AIDS. He is under the misapprehension that AIDS is a human enemy and sets off to fight "him". In the course of his search, he encounters a beautiful woman who informs him about the epidemic... and demonstrates a truly effective way of fighting it! By Idrissa Ouédraogo, Burkina Faso, based on an original idea by Amy Badiane, aged 14, from Tambacounda, Senegal. Scenarios from the Sahel is a unique collection of 13 films exploring the issue of HIV/Aids in Africa. The films combine humour, drama and animation with information about the nature of HIV/AIDS and the best forms of prevention. They provide an insight into the daily experience of living with the disease as experienced by people of all ages in Africa. In 1997, thousands of young people under 25 in Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso took part in a contest inviting them to come up with ideas for short films on HIV/AIDS. The contest was so successful that a second contest was held in early 2000. Special emphasis in this contest was placed on encouraging girls/young women, rural youth, and young people who do not attend school to participate. Scores of organisations worked in partnership to bring the conteststo communities, and almost 22000 young people took part. Photoessay West Africa Food Shortage, Sahel Desert, by Carlo Heathcote

Irregular rains in 2009 have again led to a severe lack of pasture, water and a poor harvest. The worst affected country is Niger where 7.1 million people are at risk. Some 2 million people are threatened in Chad and a substantial number of people are expected to be affected in Mali in the coming months. Parts of Nigeria and Burkina Faso are also at risk. In Niger, the harvest has fallen by 26% as compared with the previous year, and some areas, especially the Diffa in the east of country and Tillabéry to the west, have had no harvest at all. In Chad, harvests have fallen by 34%. The areas of Hadjer Lamis, Batha, Kanem, Guera regions and eastern Chad are expected to be hit hard, especially from June 2010. Overall, the harvest in the Sahel has decreased by 9% with great disparities between East and West Sahel.
