What the "Tsunami" was like for the vast majority - boring to watch but an amazing event when you think of the power involved. This is about a mile fro the Yacht Harbor where the damage was done that made the national news. This shows the most extreme of the "surges" that occured it was the 3rd or 4th. They started at around 8:00AM and continued more or less all day.

This is the first of the waves that hit at about 8:30am(no sure exactly). You basically just see the tide dropping drastically and then coming back in. This happend 3 times while i was there, no dramatic damage was observed. at 1:30 of the video is when the lowest of the tide is. Before the tide drop, the rocks that you see exposed on the beach were covered completely(i was a little late at starting to record). . look at the water level at around 2 minutes and then fast forward to the end.

I watched the first 2 waves come in and drench people, so I pulled out my flip cam (instead of my expensive equipment which remained in a water tight case) and started shooting. I stood behind a log on a slightly elevated bit of ground and only got wet up to my knees. At 11:15 am, a large surge came through the Santa Cruz harbor and sent dozens of boats, some as big as 40-feet long, turning onto their sides and slamming into other boats that were tied up at nearby slips. Several boats sank and people in the crowd gasped loudly and yelled as the boats' masts hit the water. A tsunami-related surge severely damaged at least two docks and dozens of boats at the Santa Cruz Harbor in Santa Cruz. It's the one just south of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and is highlighted by the Santa Cruz Breakwater lighthouse. A Santa Cruz County official is estimating damage in the harbor at $14 million. Earlier this morning, the water started to pour into the harbor around 7:45 am and put all moorings to the test. The first surge knocked one boat and two dock-like objects free. Later surges knocked dozens of boats free as they began to slam into each other. Some capsized under the water's pressure. Some boats sank; others ran free in the harbor. The surge went both ways.
