Saudi Arabia: The Desert Railway

As we entered the Riyadh railway station, in Saudi Arabia; our starting point is the front box office. This is where passengers may buy their tickets for their journey. A list of ticket prices and destinations are made available for passengers to choose from. Depending on the class, tickets prices vary. A first class ticket costs one hundred and twenty riyals, equivalent to 32 USD while an economic ticket may cost as low as sixty riyals, 16 USD. The trains operate on a fixed schedule providing five daily trips between "Riyadh" to "Al Hofuf" and from "Abqaiq" to "Dammam." The journey between each station consists of a four hundred and forty-nine kilometers ride. The twenty-five year old train takes around three hours to travel from Riyadh to Hofuf. The train consists of three classes separated according to price and feature. The top seating class is "Al Rehab", which offers private seating but lacks entertainment servic. The second seating class is called "Al Talla'ea," has smaller seats. The third class seating is the "Qafela", seats passengers at the end of the train. Oil Discovery and Distribution of Wealth in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (1968)

thefilmarchive.org Saudi Arabian oil was first discovered in commercial quantities at Qatif in 1938. In 1922, King 'Abd-al'-Aziz met a New Zealand mining engineer named Major Frank Holmes. During World War I, Holmes had been to Gallipoli and then Ethiopia, where he first heard rumours of the oil seeps of the Persian Gulf Region. He was convinced that much oil would be found throughout the region. After the war, Holmes helped to set up Eastern and General Syndicate Ltd in order, among other things, to seek oil concessions in the region. In 1923, the king signed a concession with Holmes allowing him to to search for oil in eastern Saudi Arabia. Eastern and General Syndicate brought in a Swiss geologist to evaluate the land but he claimed that searching for oil in Arabia would be "a pure gamble." This discouraged the major banks and oil companies from investing in Arabian oil ventures. In 1925, Holmes signed a concession with the sheikh of Bahrain, allowing him to search for oil there. He then proceeded to the United States to find an oil company that might be interested in taking on the concession. He found help from Gulf Oil. In 1927, Gulf Oil took control of the concessions that Holmes made years ago. But Gulf Oil was a partner in the Iraq Petroleum Company, which was jointly owned by Royal Dutch/Shell, Anglo-Persian, the Compagnie Française des Pétroles, and "the Near East Development Company, representing the interests of the American companies. Saudi Arabia: Is protesting for democracy un-Islamic?-Islam & Life-09-22-2011

www.presstv.com Saudi Arabia, where popular democracy has never been considered a legitimate form of rule, has seen a number of protests calling for human right and political freedom. The move included online appeals for public demonstrations and requests addressed to King Abdullah made by intellectuals and human rights activists for changes to Saudi society and constitution. Protesters were aiming for a jasmine uprising similar to that of Egypt and Tunisia. As a response, Saudi Arabia denounced pro-democracy protests as 'un-Islamic'. The royal family struck quickly, adopting a ban on public demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience. The country's top religious leaders issued a statement, slamming as "un-Islamic" calls for demonstrations and pro-reform petitions. Regulations in the kingdom forbid categorically all sorts of demonstrations and marches as they contradict Islamic Sharia law and the values and traditions of Saudi society," the Saudi Interior Ministry statement said. This leads to questions about Saudi Arabia's inaccurate religious measures and its method in 'constructing religious rules' on demand. In this edition of the show we ask the following question: Saudi Arabia: Is it un-Islamic to protest for democracy?

Ethical Oil TV Ad - Saudi Arabia (The ad Saudi Arabia doesn't want you to see)

Fact. Last year we bought over four hundred million barrels of oil from Saudi Arabia. We bankrolled a state that doesn't allow women to drive. Doesn't allow them to leave their homes - or work - without their male guardians' permission. And a state where a woman's testimony only counts for a half of a man's. Why are we paying their bills... And funding their oppression? Today there's a better way. Ethical oil. From Canada's oil sands. Ethical Oil. A choice we have to make. --- UPDATE: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, an oil rich dictatorship, has moved to censor this Canadian television ad that educates Canadian consumers about the oppression of women in Saudi Arabia and the role played by Saudi oil exports in enabling this oppression. For more on this case, follow @jessradio on Twitter. Original translation by @FreeBenghazi, with help from Eman Al Nafjan (@Saudiwoman) and Errafat Thabet (@samwaddah). Video production by Maisie Cohen. Co-ordinated by Jess Hill (@jessradio). On Thursday May 19, Manal al-Sharif, a 32-year-old IT consultant, got in her car and drove through the streets of Khobar in Saudi Arabia. Sharif had a passenger with her -- Wajeha al-Huwaider, a women's rights activist. Al-Huwaider filmed al-Sharif driving, and the two women talked about the limitations they face as women in the Gulf kingdom. Manal al-Sharif uploaded the video on YouTube, and before it was taken down four days later, it attracted over 600000 views. The following day, al-Sharif drove again, this time with her family. The car was stopped by traffic police, and arrested al-Sharif and her brother. They were released later that evening. Around 2am the following morning, religious police arrived at al-Sharif's house, and arrested her again. Saudi authorities say she will be detained until June 5. Amnesty International has declared al-Sharif a 'prisoner of conscience', and is calling for her immediate release. (www.amnesty.org.au

Brutal fight !!!! Saudi Arabia Thailand 3-0 Soccer or Muay Thai !!!!! Al-Abed !!! RIYDAH: Saudi Arabia scored thrice in the second half for a crucial 3-0 win over Thailand in a Group D round four match of the Asian World Cup qualifier, which was played a the King Fahd International Stadium, Riyadh, on Friday night. Naif Hazzazi gave the hosts the lead with a 58the minute header. Ahmed Al-Fraidi doubled the score in the 78th minute and Mohammed Nour completed the rout ten minutes later. With this win Saudi Arabia move to second place in the group with five points thus keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, that will be held in Brazil, alive. Australia top the group with nine points while Oman and Thailand take the other two spots with four points each. Saudi Arabia finally found its missing magic on a magical 11/11/11 day to defeat the dark horse of the group. Ironically, on 9/9/09, Saudi Arabia suffered an embarrassing exit against Bahrain at the same stadium in the qualifying matches of World Cup 2010 after the team drew 2-2. Saudi Arabia needed to win in order to qualify to the next round to play against New Zealand. In front of large crowd, the Saudi team entered the match with only one thing in mind - to win. The Saudi team was quick to attack in the first ten minutes in order to establish an ascendancy in the match. An early goal would have changed the face of the match. The Saudi attacks, though incisive, were blunted by the well-organized Thai ...

The phrase Tal3mrak in Saudi Arabia literally translates into "May God Prolong Your Life" - and its used as aa sign of respect when addressing royalty or influential business men in the Gulf region. But a new use of the expression in the form of a hashtag on twitter marks an outpouring of criticisms of the government from netizens in Saudi Arabia and the wider Arab World who claim the royal family ignores Saudi Arabia's poor and are quelling the spirit of dissent and self-determination across the region.
