This is my own arrangement of selections from George Fenton's score to the 1988 LWT motion picture "A Handful of Dust" (based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh). The arrangement is for solo piano, and I performed it as part of my performance unit for A2 music this year. LEON KIRCHNER: Interlude No. 1 for Solo Piano (1989) - Peter Serkin

Peter Serkin, solo piano from TROY906 (2007) www.albanyrecords.com The complete works for solo piano by this distinguished American composer. Albany is proud to present this generous selection of piano music by one of America's most important composers. Leon Kirchner was one of the last of that stalwart breed who first came to prominence in the late 1940's and early 1950s. A pupil of Bloch, Schoenberg and Sessions at the University of California, Berkeley, Kirchner's music definitely shows affinities with Schoenberg in outlook and temperament. No less than Schoenberg, Kirchner is both an ardent modernist and a volatile Romantic, a composer whose sophisticated awareness of the past informs a restless search for authenticity. A classic example would be his Piano Concerto No. 1, first recorded over 50 years ago by the composer himself with Dmitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic. Like much of the music on this disc, there is edginess and a tough demeanor, but there is real music present, in the "traditional" sense. This significant new release reissues classic performances by Leon Fleisher and Peter Serkin as well as presenting important recent pieces such as the Sonata No. 2 and The Forbidden. Piano Selections on Canon IXUS 80IS

I've finally bought a new camera! I have heard many complaints on my videos about the poor sound quality of my old camera, the Pentax Optio S6, and whilst on holiday in Australia over the summer, it broke. Since then I bought a Canon IXUS 80IS, and today I tested it for the first time with my piano playing. As you can hear, the results are a vast improvement on before, so for your listening delight, here is a small compilation of extracts to demonstrate my repertoire, and the recording quality of the camera. Philip Glass Solo Piano played by Philip Glass 1 Full Hour 10/4/2011 Hidden Valley, Carmel CA

www.daysandnightsfestival.com This was the closing night, September 4th, 2011 at the Carmel Valley Theatre, Carmel CA. I saw the night before with my parents, with a full ensemble, and decided I needed to come back the next day by myself. Hard to believe Mr. Glass is 74 years old, go Philip. This video is dedicated to the woman I was dating back in 1985 who suggested we drop acid and watch a movie called Koyaanisqatsi. I've never been the same since. I'm still in love with that woman to this day. I strongly urge anyone and everyone to watch Philip Glass' masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi, I saw it performed live by Philip with the movie behind him 10 years ago, it was just as mindblowing then. Helios - Coalescence

Circle Into Square Compilation Vol. 2 (2011) Keith Kenniff: Keith's other projects: Mint Julep Goldmund Meadows (children's music) Raised in rural Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Keith started playing drums, guitar and bass at a very young age. He played in a variety of touring bands, from rock to jazz and classical, and took influence from each situation, learning from the successes and inevitable failures, discovering his musical likes and dislikes. He was finally drawn to study percussion at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music. He took a keen interest in film, taking time to study it whenever he could to broaden his knowledge of independent and world cinema and filmscore. Through his interests in music and film, Keith developed a sense of space and restraint, which are evident in his musical projects. His primary musical venture is the solo project 'Helios', showcasing his skill in percussion, his delicate touch on the guitar, his measured and spacious songwriting, and his self-taught electro-acoustic production. Miami-based label merck released his first album entitled 'Unomia' which went on to receive international acclaim. Less than a year after Unomia had hit the shelves, another of Keith's projects, 'Goldmund', saw the light of day with the release of 'Corduroy Road', a selection of solo piano recordings released on the young British label Type Records. This album was also well received internationally, and some of its tracks have been used in films and major ...

Secret Garden - "Heartstrings" piano solo (Barbra Streisand's "I Dreamed of You" based on this)

Secret Garden - "Heartstrings" Music by Rolf Lovland Arranged by me Everyone seems to be familiar with Josh Groban's version of "You Raise Me Up." However, many people are unaware that the music was written by Rolf Lovland of Secret Garden and that Secret Garden recorded the original (with Brendan Graham as vocalist). Secret Garden has recorded a wealth of music and much of it pays homage to great classical composers. I plan to post a number of my solo piano arrangements of some of their works, and I hope that you will enjoy their music as well. This particular selection, "Heartstrings," was even adapted into a song entitled "I've Dreamed of You" by Barbra Streisand (she sang it at her wedding). Heartstrings first appeared on the album "Songs from a Secret Garden." I use the music scores from the Secret Garden Collection book (ISBN: 0757937063). Most of the music in this book is written for violin with piano accompaniment. But as I hope to demonstrate in this video and future uploads, much of the music can be played as piano solos with a little creativity. If you like this video, you may want to check out my piano arrangement of Secret Garden's "Song from a Secret Garden" as well. Thanks for watching! -Rick

Beethoven - Für Elise (piano solo)

Für Elise, by Ludwig van Beethoven, played by Stephen Malinowski, with bar-graph and conventional scores. FAQ Q: Where can I get the music for this piece? A: The score in the video is available for free here: www.musanim.com And here's a version for a solo melody instrument (like flute): www.musanim.com Q: What does "Für Elise" mean? A: For Elisa; read more about it here: en.wikipedia.org Q: I am trying to learn this piece, but the rhythm is confusing. Help! A: You are right, the rhythm is confusing. I had the same trouble when I was first trying to learn the piece. The reason for this is that Beethoven is playing a rhythmic trick on us; the piece is notated in 3/8 time, but the notes sometimes form 3/8 groups and sometimes form 3/4 groups (or, at the beginning, 2/4). I've made a version of the score that shows how this works; you might find that it is easier to learn from this: www.musanim.com Q: I want to learn to play the piano; what advice can you give me? A: I've put some suggestions here: www.musanim.com Q: Did Beethoven write this when he was deaf? A: Beethoven started losing his hearing in 1796, when he was about 26 years old; Carl Czerny said that he could hear music in 1812, but he was almost completely deaf by 1814. He wrote Fur Elise 1808 and 1810, so he probably could hear it, at least a little. In any case, he could certainly hear it perfectly "in his head," since he could read music (and hear in it his "mind's ear") just as easily as most people can read ...

Reminiscence - solo piano composition by Michael Martel (tehmikuji)

I just realized my small collection of uploads on Youtube did not include any examples of my musical endeavors, err, well I mean, piano-wise (there is the whole rap chop remix thing and the murlocks and the mGLAYVin... anyway most of that stuff is just more for fun anyway). This is a piece I wrote some-odd years back. It's called Reminiscence and is the eponymous title track of my album, 'Reminiscence'. The real places to go for more of my work though would be: www.soundclick.com/michael.stuart.martel and www.facebook.com/pages/Michael-Stuart-Martel-pianistcomposer/189518491080781 (that's directly to the artist page) or more simply: www.facebook.com/michael.stuart.martel (to get to my personal page, from which there should be a link somewhere to my artist page... one would think). That said, I do (slightly) warn ye, I haven't updated the music content in quite some time. (Damn you, composer's block!) And to answer a potential question: It is self recorded, meaning it's I who am performing the piece, as well as handling all the recording and post-processing and such, however due to either Youtube and/or probably more likely my ineptness at video editing (I'm still learning), you are not getting the full audio quality. I believe it's been reduced to MP3 112kbps. For some reason, that was the highest MP3 quality selection I could find while exporting from Sony Vegas. Video program tips are always welcome, as the whole video thing is not my primary hobby, and like I said, I ...

Michael Nyman - Big My Secret (Scent of Love) from the Piano

Michael Nyman's (awkwardly entitled) Big My Secret was written for the Jane Campion film The Piano. Despite the high praise the film received from both critics and the public, I disliked it. However, much of Nyman's film score caught my ear (eg, the Heart Asks Pleasure First, Big My Secret, the Embrace, Lost & Found, All Imperfect Things, and a Wild & Distant Shore). I gave up piano lessons around 7th or 8th grade (a group of well-meaning people inadvertently removed the joy of music-making). It wasn't until I was a sophomore in college that I gradually started playing the piano on a regular basis again. Big My Secret is the first piece I learned when I returned to piano, so it is personally significant. If you enjoy this music, I recommend that you check out Nyman's music scores for Gattaca (one of my all-time favorite films), the End of the Affair, and Wonderland. Since this comes up quite a bit on Youtube, the sheet music is available in The Piano (ISBN 9780711933224) and the Revisiting the Piano (ISBN 0711968845) music books. I prefer the selections in the latter of the two books. The next piano solo I plan to post is Secret Garden's "Heartstrings." Thanks for watching! -Rick

Clearing Mists (contemporary classical composition, piano solo)

This is my latest composition, which I recently completed, notated and recorded. It is for piano solo and is entitled "Clearing Mists". Although it is not directly inspired or influenced by any particular composer, there are notable nods to Messiaen, Debussy, Schoenberg and Ozzard-Low which can be heard in retrospect. It was "Highly Commended" in the BBC Young Composer Competition 2011. If you would like a copy of the score, or a basic analysis, just send me a message. Programme Notes: Although the title of this work came only after its completion, it holds relevance not just for the musical content but also for the circumstances surrounding it. I had been looking into serialism and systematic methods of pitch selection, and although I have great love for much music based on these principles, its aesthetics and formal structures were getting me down; I felt restricted and did not feel I could compose freely the music that was part of myself under such bases. So one day I was in a small practice room in London at a rather ropey grand piano, and I simply played and wrote down what I liked. It was through this intuitive approach that Clearing Mists was created, and interestingly for me I would analyse parts sometime after their initial birth, and notice connections and theoretical patterns which were inherent; form developed through juxtaposition of apparently unrelated ideas, and occasional repetition helped give the piece shape. Although fairly simplistic in some ways ...

YUNDI - In That Place Wholly Faraway

ORDER YOUR COPY HERE: links.emi.com ... Yundi, the charismatic pianist with a rock star following in China, is releasing his first CD devoted to music from his homeland. Recorded on a red Steinway grand in Beijing's dazzling National Performing Arts Centre in July 2011, Red Piano commemorates the centenary of the 1911 Chinese Revolution and the 90 year anniversary of the foundation of the Chinese Communist Party. Red is the traditional colour of China. "Red is also the best colour to show my love to my country," Yundi says. The centrepiece of Red Piano is one of the best-known works in the Chinese orchestral repertoire, Yellow River Piano Concerto, performed with the China NCPA Concert Hall Orchestra under conductor Zuohuang Chen. The concerto is followed by a selection of virtuosic, classical pieces for solo piano based on traditional Chinese melodies and songs, several of them arranged, and one newly composed for the disc, by the contemporary Chinese composer Zhang Zhao. A bonus DVD contains two solo piano songs and a "behind the scenes" mini-documentary. "I hope Red Piano opens a new gateway for music lovers in the West," Yundi said recently. "They may better understand the folk features of Chinese music and it may spark their interest to know more about China. ... Music is the best communication tool that does not need language and can bring people from different cultures together. My new album is an opportunity to win glory for Chinese music."

Dawn- Pride and Prejudice (piano solo)

Please read this for info/sheet music! I just checked my comments for the first time in YEARS since I first posted the video. To answer simple questions: I was 17 when I recorded this, this was indeed inside my house and the view is my backyard (I am blessed with a beautiful view!) I have been playing piano since I was 5 soo I am currently at (hopefully) an advanced level. I was NOT naked while filming hahaha.. thats gross. My piano is a Yamaha but it is slightly out of tune.. my apologies. I also usually do not mess up when playing, but when I was recording, I got really nervous and kept screwing up.. This was my 10th take and though I did mess up, my fingers were tired and stiff and I just posted it anyways. I hope to make a tutorial WHEN I have time, but since I am a bio major at UCI, I don't have much time on my hands to play/make videos :( And lastly, THANK YOU to all the people who viewed and who commented such sweet things on this video! It means the world to me. It really warms my heart to read your comments! Have a great day! :)

Mozart Piano Concerto, K. 488 (Zoltán Kocsis) movement 1

The great A Major Piano Concerto, K. 488, number 23, Zoltán Kocsis at the piano with the Virtuosi di Praga under Jirí Behlohlávek, recorded live At The Rittersaal Of Palais Waldstein, Prague, 29 August 1990. Figured bass and the "col basso" In Mozart's day it was expected that the soloist in these concertos would play in the tuttis, realising a figure bass. In most of Mozart's autograph scores of these piano concertos, the orchestral bass line was carefully figured, and in tutti passages, the piano staves are almost always marked 'col basso'-- instructing the the copyist that the bass line for tutti sections must be copied into the solo part. Leopold supervised many scores where he put in the figuring himself after the copies were made--so there is no doubt that he and his son expected the soloist to perform a 'continuo' role outside of the solo selections. There is one example in Mozart's hand, thought to be prepared for an inexperienced pupil, of this continuo part for piano--the C major concerto, K. 246. You can find it in Paul Badura-Skoda's Eulenburg edition of K.246 of 1968 (no.1269)...it's mostly 3 or 4 part harmony, in chordal fashion. Sometimes just octaves, sometimes just left hand doubling the bass line at cello pitch ('tasto solo') It was later in the Romantic era, especially after Beethoven's death, that the soloist performing in all piano concerti was conspicuously silent, to highten the dramatic effect of the lone voice versus the group.

In the days before radio, with acoustic recordings limited to wax cylinder and Victrola, reproducing piano rolls of opera and orchestral works were popular as the only practical way for many to hear such music in high fidelity. Armbruster was employed by Aeolian, and produced many rolls for them, including popular, salon, opera, and classical selections.
