The Sentex KyleMod 555 Oscillator DC to AC Inverter (12VDC - 120VAC) 1 Watt Lamp
Here's a great little inverter from www.sentex.net (C)2002 Tony van Roon - that I modded slightly that I find a lot of fun for running 100 VAC LED lamps on a 12v battery. I call it the Sentex KyleMod All parts are easily had by recycling dead stereos / UPS's etc. No Centre Tap Transformer needed. I learned that by modding the oscillation frequency and filter capacitance you can get this little inverter to really be conservative on the amp draw, quite cool! She puts out pretty good light at 12.8 volts / 70 mA (under 1 watt). There is lots of room to optimize this further :) I want to push the frequencies and voltages higher yet, work with some ferrites if possible :) Build one and let me see what you got! PT. 2 The Sentex KyleMod 555 Oscillator DC to AC Inverter (12VDC - 54VAC) 1 Watt Lamp
I'm not sure how you actually get a full 120 VAC out of this lamp, but I have found a mod that makes it pretty useful incorporating smaller components and a more versatile arrangement making it a great RV lamp that you can still run on an extension cord, given the AC. A small trickle charger solar panel (12v 120 mA) goes on sale at Canadian Tire for $9.99 a few times a year that would be suffice to keep this setup regenerated. The circuit when run with (3) 120 VAC (2 watt) LED bulbs in parallel (WALMART's cheapest household LEDs) offers a HI and LO mode, ranging from 70mA (.9 watts) to 130 mA (1.6 watts) depending on HI/LO, and 1,2 or 3 bulbs running. There is no heat produced and if you are crafty, you could fit the whole package back into the wall adapter case, a standard 120VAC - 6VDC 300 mA adapter, very easily found.

12 Volt 1 or 2 Watt CFL Driver - 555 Oscillator / Inverter - Sentex Kyle Mod II
A while back I played with a circuit by Tony Van Roon I coined the Sentex Kylemod, given that the circuit was hosted at sentex.net. I just heard that Tony is no longer with us, so rest in peace Tony, and thank you for your cool contributions to the electronic web. Anyhow, here is a variant, quite likely done by someone before, no doubt, but I stumbled across it, and it is close to Tony Van Roon circuit, so I'll called it The Sentex Kylemod II for now, if someone holds a copyright (I doubt it, but you never know...) let me know. It is a nice, if not completely efficient, useful way to take garbage and drive a CFL, ac powered. You can find 6V adapters in any garbage dump, or thrift store... mine was a typical 4 lead 300 mA. The circuit is enough to put a warm glow on the room, and would provide a nice outdoor solar lamp set up, cabin/camp light. Not a battery burner, just 70 - 80 mA on a 12V, so less current than a typical AC inverter uses during idle, even. Maybe you could get more power out of it by lowering the value of the resistor. * note: If your not happy with the output, take another 103 capacitor and place it in series with the one on the pin 2 to ground, This will double the current to about 130 mA, and give you substantially more light, I'll show that in a second video. Ok, one more LOL. The last video was really not the setup one wants to build... I don't think... I may delete it. She's a recipe for destruction. Like so many of my circuits are...LOL This is pretty good though and I'm gonna call this final and build it. Scope shots and more accurate measuring on this one. A continuation of the same circuit with 0.03 uF of capacitance on the collector / positive junction and the same 0.005 uF on pin 2 to ground. In this one, I used a different 6V transformer, this one being rated at 700mA. I also added a heatsink to the mosfet, as it is now getting hot, so this circuit needs some additional work, I'm not so sure it as stable as the others. It seems a bit less efficient.
