Now that "Purim" (the Feast of Esther, holiday of gift-giving) is over, it is time to prepare for "Passover" (the holiday commermorating the Exodus from Egypt). The "Matzohs" are being baked, the stuffed leaves prepared. Grandmother leads her troops against every crumb, every drop of dust, even the ceilings are not safe. And then comes the Rabbi to inspect our efforts, and to remind old aunts not to eat bread for eight days. Purim is over and Passover approaches. May Almighty God give us good fortune.

10 Minute Topics: Sephardim Jews

The next in a weekly series of 10 minute topics teaching about various topics within Judaism. This week's topic is: Sephardim Jews. The Sephardim are the descendants of the Jews who were disbursed as slaves and exiles from Israel by the Roman Empire. Once the Roman Empire dissolved, the descendants of these Jews migrated throughout Europe. Many of them settled in Spain and Portugal where they thrived until the Spanish Inquisition and Expulsion in 1492 and the Portuguese Inquisition and Expulsion in 1497. Música Sefardí/Sephardic Music "Yo en estando"

I lay in my bed, anana, sleeping as usual. I picked up my little vihuela, onono, plucked its strings as usual. to pluck the vihuela I went, anana, to the house of my girlfriend. Open, I said, my soul , anana, open, I said, my life. I'm holding the child in my arms, onono, If I opened, it would awaken. Put a fig in its hand, onono, and the problem will take care of itself. I have doors of pine wood, onono, if I opened, they would squeak. Put vinegar on the hinges, onono, and they will open by themselves. The wicked old man is sleeping, onono, if I opened, he would awaken. Throw covers over the old man, onono, and sleep will triumph over him. As these words were spoken, onono, the old man awakened. What is the matter, my wife, onono, that I see you so disturbed? With the child of my neighbor, onono, who gave me burnt bread. I see you, my wife, onono, on a slippery pavement. Wicked old man, I wish, onono, that you, with a hundred logs With a hundred logs, onono, would burn in the oven! This song tells the story of a young man who cannot sleep for his desire of a woman who is married to an old man. The historical Spanish version in the Cancionero de Palacio, set to music by Juan del Encina, contains only the first four lines of the account, while in the Sephardic version from Tetouan (Morocco) the entire story has been preserved. The two versions are basically different in melody and structure, but exhibit several corresponding melodic elements. Performers: Sarband

המוסיקה היהודית האנדלוסית يهود الأندلس Jewish Sephardic music

Mor Karbasi You wait 500 years for a Ladino singer to mix medieval Sephardic songs with a twist of flamenco, and then two come along at once. Following hard on the footsteps of Yasmin Levy comes the London-based Mor Karbasi. Songs such as "Shechahoret", a traditional wedding song in Hebrew and Latin, have the familiar Ladino swoops up and down the octaves; the modern songs, with music by Karbasi and her musical partner, Joe Taylor, and many with lyrics by Karbasi's mother Shoshana, are recognisably their descendants

Los Desterrados Sephardic Flamenco

Los Desterrados -- 'The Exiles' -- are a London sextet who have created their own radical, rousing and rootsy take on the ancient folk music of the Sephardic Jews. As the Gypsy Kings reinvigorated flamenco and the Gotan Project revitalised tango so Los Desterrados have brought vibrant new life to Sephardic music. Fusing Spanish Flamenco and the fiery Gypsy melodies of the Balkans and Greece, with the rhythms of Morocco and Turkey, Los Desterrados have created a rootsy Mediterranean sound that is wholly their own. Featuring traditional instruments such as the cajón and 'oud with vocals in Ladino, the language of the Sephardic Jews, or Hebrew, the unconventional arrangements and rousing rhythms Los Des wield are heavily influenced by the music they've all grown up on as native North Londoners - rock 'n' roll, jazz, folk, flamenco, funk and soul.

Ringworm Children:Mass Radiation Poisoning of Sephardic Jews

Alongside Palestinians, Mizrahi (Sephardi) Jews are Zionism's "other" victims www.sott.net This is a trailer for a documentary detailing the mass radiation of thousands of Sephardic Jews. The video can be ordered here: www.filmbaby.com Clips from The Ringworm's Children video on YouTube: www.youtube.com Exerpt from IsraeliInsider.com "In 1951, the director general of the Israeli Health Ministry, Dr. Chaim Sheba, flew to America and returned with seven x-ray machines, supplied to him by the American army. They were to be used in a mass atomic experiment with an entire generation of Sephardi youths to be used as guinea pigs. Every Sephardi child was to be given 35000 times the maximum dose of x-rays through his head. For doing so, the American government paid the Israeli government 300 million Israeli liras a year. The entire Health budget was 60 million liras. The money paid by the Americans is equivalent to billions of dollars today." Sephardic Chant; Psalm 92: 1-5 (Panpipe)

Another version of this piece, with better audio quality, has been uploaded to: ca.youtube.com (The acoustical space is much better as well.) A free-form interpretation of an old Sephardic chant. I don't think such pieces were meant to be played in too strict a time, and embellishment was expected. (Once again, no expertise in this sort of music, but I DO have a lot of sheet music. :) ) (*Please pardon the open shirt and my posture. It was a very hot, muggy night, I did not have this piece memorized & needed the music in front of me.)

Sephardic Songs: A la nana

Vocal music was very important during the Renaissance years and many vocal pieces were secular. Some surviving popular music may be heard in the music of a new Jewish diaspora, the music of Spanish Jewry, the Sephardim, expelled from Spain in 1492 as Ferdinand and Isabella consolidated their power. Those thus displaced often found a welcome in the lands of the Ottoman Empire, to which they brought linguistic and cultural traditions that still survive. Nani Nani (Sephardic Lullaby) with lyrics ~ Hadass Pal-Yarden

This romansa represents the story in a dialogue between a woman and her treacherousb husband who returns at nights from his lover. While putting her son to sleep she is revealing her sorrow to him and tells about the deeds of his father. Nani Nani sometimes starts also with the text: durmete mi alma, durmete mi vista [sleep my soul, sleep my life] and often has a refrain muevo amor, muevo dolor (new love, new pain). Its origin is an old romance of Hispanic Christian origin. This lullaby has melodic parallels in Turkish and Greek cultures and carries melismatic, non-metric, musical characteristics. A related melody refers also to another romansa which deals with a queen who finds her lost sister (Hermana reina y cuativa): two sisters who were captive during the Reconquista, brought together again, one as a Moorish queen and the other as a Christian slave. When they both gave birth on the same day, the queen recognized her sister by the lullaby she sang and by her birthmark. /Yahudice Hadass Pal-Yarden
