David Beckham has condemned Sepp Blatter's comments about racism in football as "appalling". The former England captain has weighed into the row over the Fifa president, who sparked a row by downplaying the issue earlier this week. Beckham, who plays for LA Galaxy in the US, insisting this was wrong and said the statement had been damaging to the sport. He said: "The comments were appalling... I don't think the comments were very good for this game. "It [racism] is still there and it can't just be swept under the carpet and it can't just be sorted out with a handshake." Mr Blatter, 75, claimed on Wednesday that racist incidents during matches could be settled with a handshake at the end of the game. In a follow-up interview on Thursday, he reiterated his views and described some comments as simple "foul language". "I'm not saying about discrimination, but it's foul language, it's a foul play. At the end of the match, if you have foul play [when] the match is over you shake hands now because it's what we want to do," he said. "Before the match and at the end of the match, everyone shall shake hands and therefore also forget what has been on the field of play. But Blatter insisted that he was a committed anti-discrimination campaigner, and suggested critical players such as Rio Ferdinand and Andrew Cole should show "more understanding" of Fifa's work to tackle racism. From BBC News: Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor says Sepp Blatter should resign as Fifa president over his comments on racism. Blatter claimed that football does not have on-field problems with racism. However Taylor told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme: "When you see the corruption they've had at Fifa, I just feel it's the straw that broke the camel's back. "The comments he made about homosexuals not going to Qatar; it's time to move over for [Uefa chief] Michel Platini." Taylor was reacting to comments made by Blatter in two separate television interviews when the Swiss leader of football's world governing body was asked whether he thought racism on the pitch was a problem in the modern-day game. Gus Poyet has maintained his defence of fellow Uruguayan Luis Suarez saying he would go to court to prove the Liverpool striker is not a racist.
