Russian Foreign Minister - Sergey Lavrov :Blames west for 'provocation' over Syria

From: Russia Today Russian FM blames west for 'provocation' over Syria Published: 21 November, 2011, 16:19 Russia has accused the west of exacerbating the already tense situation in Syria. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says calls for the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime are nothing but a provocation. "In Syria we are now seeing a situation where the Arab League is calling for a halt to violence and the beginning of dialogue, and western countries and the capitals of some countries in the region are making calls to the contrary, expressly recommending the opposition hold no talks with the Assad regime," Lavrov announced. "It looks like a political provocation on an international scale. Yes, violence has to be stopped, but this demand has to be addressed to the authorities and armed groups in the Syrian opposition," he argued. The Russian government has established trustworthy relations with both Assad's regime and armed opposition groups. Moscow is potentially the only third force capable of forcing the sides to strike a deal. But as the Russian FM warns, the position of certain foreign states is likely to prevent peaceful negotiations. "A kind of liberation army of Syria has appeared and created a Temporary Military Council, proclaiming as its aim toppling the regime in Syria," Sergey Lavrov says. "Some European capitals are preparing to discuss the issue at the UN Security Council, equating the military actions of Syrian renegades to the manifestation of democratic ...

Russian FM Defends UN Charter As Dynamic Duo of Deplorable Diplomats Continue Attacks Over Syria

What is the difference between Sergei Lavrov, Hillary Clinton and William (Jefferson) Hague? One of them is a Diplomat, the other two are a very poor duo of English-speaking wannabes who insult the thinking part of the international community with every word that comes out of their mouths and who betray their countries with each and every act. Hague's claim made last Monday (13.03.2012) that there have been diplomatic consequences for "Russia and China" over the decision to veto the more intrusive impulses of the FUKUS-Axis (France, UK, US and Israel) is a telling example of his arrogance, insolence and top-down, know-it-all, break-wind-in-your-face approach to diplomacy, not his middle name. For a start, get the countries right. It is the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China. Secondly, what "diplomatic consequences"? There have been diplomatic consequences for the NATO and its puppets states for sure, after their lies on Libya and their wholesale act of slaughter, arming and financing terrorists and sending them into Libyan society to do what they did. And now the diplomatic consequences for the United Kingdom and the United States of America are that their governments sided with those who sliced the breasts off women in the streets, who sliced the throats of North Africans because they were black, who committed ethnic cleansing, who raped children, who tortured people, sodomised detainees, torched buildings, went looting and stealing. Russia warns West it risks war over Syria, Iran

January 19, 2012 -- MOSCOW -- The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has warned outside encouragement of anti-government uprisings in the Middle East and north Africa could lead to "a very big war that will cause suffering not only to countries in the region but also to states far beyond its boundaries." Mr. Lavrov's annual news conference on Wednesday was largely a critique of Western policies in Iran and Syria, which he said could lead to a spiral of violence. He said Russia would use its position on the United Nations Security Council to veto any UN authorisation of military strikes against forces loyal to the government of Syria's President, Bashar al-Assad. The UN has called for the government to end a crackdown on opposition demonstrators, which Arab League monitors say resulted in hundreds of deaths over the past month. "If someone conceives the idea of using force at any cost -- and I've already heard calls for sending some Arab troops to Syria -- we are unlikely to be able to prevent this," Mr. Lavrov said. "But this should be done on their own initiative and should remain on their conscience. They won't get any authorization from the Security Council." Mr. Lavrov said a military strike against Iran would be a "catastrophe"' and that sanctions proposed against Tehran had been couched in terms of nuclear non-proliferation but were "seriously intended to have a smothering effect on the Iranian economy." -SMH

Russia's FM slams West's stance on Syria

Russia's foreign minister has accused the West of taking an "immoral" stance on Syria by pressuring President Bashar al-Assad while refusing to condemn violence by what he called "armed extremist groups" trying to oust the Arab leader. Sergei Lavrov also rebuffed calls on Moscow to back sanctions against Syria, where a nine-month-long government crackdown on a popular uprising is estimated to have killed more than 5000 people. He did, however, back the Arab League's push to send observers to the country, which some fear is on the verge of civil war.

Lavrov says boths sides to blame for Syria violence

www.euronews.com Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, says the Assad regime should not be solely blamed for violence in Syria. During a heated meeting in Cairo, Arab league countries pressed Moscow to join their attempts to Isolate the Syrian President, but Lavrov said they should instead focus on getting aid into the country: Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister: "I believe that we all agree when we talk on Syria that the immediate task now is to end violence irrespective of the sources - like the Arab League initiative from 2nd November says - and allow humanitarian assistance to all those who are in need of it" Russia, a long standing ally of Damascus - and its main arms supplier - has vetoed two UN security council resolutions that blamed Assad's regime for the violence. Along with China the two countries have shielded Damascus from its Western and Arab critics. Lavrov is also said to have held a meeting with Kofi Annan, the special envoy for Syria appointed by the UN and the League, ahead of his visit to Syria on Saturday. The EU is preparing to further toughen sanctions on Syria in a bid to crank up pressure on the country's regime. The decision came after Russia and China vetoed the latest draft UN resolution on Syria. Moscow and Beijing say the wording took sides in the Syrian conflict, as it solely blamed the government for violence, without mentioning armed extremist groups. In Syria, opposition leaders claim at least 50 people have been killed in a fresh wave of attacks by the army on the city of Homs. The government denies the assault, and amateur footage showing the alleged shelling cannot be verified. Russia has apparently signed a contract to sell combat jets to Syria in a show of support for President Bashar Assad's regime. The $550-million deal ensures the delivery of 36 Yak-130 aircraft. If confirmed, the deal would mark an open defiance of international efforts to put pressure on Assad's regime. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow doesn't consider it necessary to offer an explanation or excuses over suspicions that a Russian ship had delivered munitions to Syria despite an EU arms embargo. Russia has been a strong ally of Syria since Soviet times when the country was led by the president's father Hafez Assad. It has supplied Syria with aircraft, missiles, tanks and other modern weapons. The Yak-130 is a twin-engined combat trainer jet that can also be used to attack ground targets.
