After several years of absence, the DVD "Sergiu Celibidache's Garden" is finally available again exclusively at www.celibidachegarden.com. An intimate portrait of the world famous and revered classical conductor and composer Sergiu Celibidache. This ambitious cinema docu-drama follows the maestro through rehearsal with the Munich Philharmoniker and on tour. The film crew's main objective was to re-create Celibidache's universe on the widescreen and although he usually avoided publicity, he made himself extremely available for the film. Indeed we were able to shoot over one hundred hours of Super 16mm and record more than two hundred hours of digital stereo sound.

In other words, this was perhaps the first "baroque" rendition of the chaconne (1977 recording), which some of you may like. Rumanian film "Dacii" (1966) directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu. la atac Fuscus (portrayed by French actor Georges Marchal) orders a disastrous cavalry charge by the "Rhine Legion" into a Dacian trap, against the better judgement of Severus (Pierre Brice). Marcus (played by Sergiu Nicolaescu himself) is among those executed in the decimation that followed as punishment for losing Severus and the legionaire eagle.

Richard Wagner - Siegfried Idyll
Conductor: Sergiu Celibidache & Münchner Philharmoniker Apart from the operas, Wagner composed a small number of pieces; this stems from his reluctance to conceive music which didn't belong to the sacredness of the drama, fundamental expression of his thought. The "Siegfried Idyll" is a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra, composed by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen. Wagner's opera "Siegfried", which was premiered in 1876, incorporates music from the Idyll. It was once thought that the Idyll borrowed musical ideas intended for the opera, but it is now known that the opposite is the case: Wagner adapted melodic material from an unfinished chamber piece in the Idyll and later incorporated it into the love scene between Siegfried and Brunhilde in the opera.

Dacii (1966) - Decebal vs Severus
Rumanian film "Dacii" (1966) directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu. iata steagul This is the ending where Severus (portrayed by French actor Pierre Brice) and Decebal ("The Bravest", portrayed by Amza Pellea) fight to the death in front of their respective troops. Since the film deals with the Roman invasion into Dacia under Domitian, this final battle scene seems to depict the Dacian victory at Tapae (the irongate into Dacia) where historically Fuscus was killed, Legio V Alaudae got crushed and its eagle captured. Severus appears to be a purely fictional character with no historical basis, since here he is elevated to command the invading Roman army after killing Fuscus (portrayed by Georges Marchal) in a duel. Notice the Dacian standard is the Draco.

Dacii (1966) - Roman cavalry charge
Rumanian film "Dacii" (1966) directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu. This scene depicts an increasing senile and reckless Fuscus (portrayed by French actor Georges Marchal) ordering Severus (portrayed by Pierre Brice) and Marcus to lead what turns out to be a disastrous cavalry charge into a Dacian trap. It appears the Dacians lay this ploy to destroy the numerically superior Roman cavalry, before engaging the Roman infantry in a showdown. The eagle of a Roman legion would be captured. According to some articles I found on the net, the legion was Legio V Alaudae, although other sources claim this legion was destroyed during the Batavian rebellion in a different era.
