Doc Severinsen - In the Court of the Crimson King

From the album "Doc Severinsen's Closet" (1970). Tonight Show trumpeter Doc Severinsen's bizarre take on the King Crimson classic, with a little Tijuana Brass-y flavor and some Bond/modish tinges thrown in. This album also has a medley of Abbey Road songs on it. Never reissued.

Doc Severinsen - Werle Concerto No 3

This is one of four concertos that Floyd Werle wrote for Doc Severinsen. The performance here, from June 4, 1976, was under the baton of Doc's long-time friend Charles Forque. Doc and Charles commissioned many pieces for trumpet and band, and they would typically have a concert in Texas once a year where they could premier newly-written solos. The band playing with Doc is the Robert E. Lee High School Band of Baytown, Texas. Doc is enjoying a very long and brilliant career. He started at an early age to play professionally, including with big bands led by luminaries such as Charlie Barnett. He was a first-call studio player in New York City and was lead trumpet on a great many albums. Doc made his first solo album in the very early 1960's (Tempestuous Trumpet) and continued making such albums until farily recently. He was lead trumpet with the Tonight Show Band while the band was led by Skitch Henderson, and upon Herderson's retirement Doc became the leader of that outstanding big band. Floyd E. Werle (1929-2010) Floyd Werle retired after 32 years as Chief of Composition and Arranging of the United States Air Force Band, Symphony Orchestra and Singing Sergeants. He has been hailed as one of the nation's foremost composers. His works for symphonic band and symphonic orchestra have been acclaimed throughout America, especially the three Concerti for Trumpet written for Doc Severnson and performed by most of the major orchestras in the United States. If someone knows otherwise let me know. The DVD is titled "Jazz Festival, Vol. 2" by Storyville Films and is available at various online vendors. It also features sets by Duke Ellington and Bobby Hackett. Volume 1 features Louis Armstrong, Eddie Condon and again Bobby Hackett, all filmed in similar fashion in high fidelity stereo.

Doc Severinsen - I Wanna Be With You

Funk/Soul music by Doc Severinsen & Orchestra Severinsen was born in Arlington, Oregon, the son of Minnie Mae and Carl Severinsen, who was a dentist.[1] He was nicknamed "Little Doc" after his father, and had originally wanted to play the trombone. But the senior Severinsen, a gifted amateur violinist, urged him to study the violin. The younger Severinsen insisted on the trombone, but had to settle for the only horn available in Arlington's small music store — a trumpet. A week later, with the help of his father and a manual of instructions, the seven-year-old was so good that he was invited to join the high school band. At the age of twelve, Little Doc won the Music Educator's National Contest and, while still in high school, was hired to go on the road with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra. However, his stay with the group was cut short by the draft. He served in the Army during World War II.

Doc Severinsen plays a Tribute to Harry James Aug 2, 1988

I was in attendance at this concert in 1988. It was 105 degrees at concert time at Riverbend outdoor amphitheater in Cincinnati, Ohio. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops presented "Big Band Hit Parade". The soloists included Buddy Morrow, Dave Brubeck, Eddie Daniels, Gerry Mulligan, Ray Brown, Ed Shaughnessy, Cab Calloway, and Doc Severinsen. Doc played a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to his all-time hero Harry James by playing "You Made Me Love You". Doc hits the final double-high A "flat" but lips it in tune and recieved an great ovation.

Doc Severinsen - The world's gone home (1975)

This is the second upload in my series of the "Best Soul Records Of All Time". Recorded this on a C120 audio tape from a radio show in 1976 - possibly Mike Raven's. I still have the tape and it plays! Finally got the LP it came from on Ebay a few years back and transferred this track to my PC - the rest of the album is OK for trumpet enthusiasts, but it's not for me. Not many single tracks I would buy an album for but this is definitely one of them. I got rid of any glitches and as it wasn't long enough, I extended it by 2 mins! Vocals are by Earl Moss. If I ever get married again (!) this is the track I would play for the last dance at the evening bash. Just about perfect. Enjoy!
