Conserving Shackleton's Historic Hut in Antarctica
Conservators with the Antarctic Heritage Trust talk about their work at the historic 1908 Shackleton hut at Cape Royds in Antarctica. Video by Mary Lynn Price, WomenInAntarctica.com. Built 100 years ago in 1908 as part of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition, the hut is filled with the effects and furnishings from that "heroic era" expedition. Because of the hard work and diligence of the Trust, the hut and its historic contents have been restored for future generations of visitors and scholars to enjoy, learn from and be inspired by. Just two years after the legendary RMS Titanic sank, Sr. Ernest Shackleton, a celebrated polar explorer, coordinated the British Imperial Trans-Atlantic Expedition. His goal: the first crossing of the Antarctic continent, a feat that he considered to be the last, great polar journey of the Heroic Age of Exploration. The expedition would become the greatest survival story ever told for Shackleton and his 27-man crew. Early in the expedition, they encountered unusually harsh ice conditions that trapped their ship for 10 months before crushing it, forcing them on a harrowing journey to safety that would last over 14 months. www.cosi.org

Amy Shackleton - Painting Timelapse #2
I paint representational works with a drip technique normally reserved for abstraction. I don't use paintbrushes, I apply the paint with squeeze bottles and rotate my canvas to guide each drip as it falls down the stretched surface. Thorough planning, measuring and layering is involved, but I'm at the mercy of gravity. The natural force of gravity allows for a refreshing unpredictability that helps illustrate the organic elements in my work. To combat the natural, I use a rotating easel and a level—creating straight lines, controlled curves, and eventually, concrete buildings. "Waterworks" is currently on display until April 29 at The Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto, as part of my solo show "Terraces: A Series of Steps to a Sustainable Future." With this show, I demonstrate the significance of urban agriculture for sustainable development.
