Frankly Mr Shankly - The Smiths

The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey (vocals) and Johnny Marr (guitar), the band also included Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums). Critics have called them the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s, and the group has had a major influence on subsequent artists. Morrissey's lovelorn tales of alienation found an audience amongst youth culture bored by the ubiquitous synthesizer-pop bands of the early 1980s, while Marr's complex melodies helped return guitar-based music to popularity in Britain. The Queen Is Dead is the third studio album by the English rock band The Smiths. It was released on 16 June 1986 in the United Kingdom by Rough Trade Records. Sire Records released the album in the United States on 23 June 1986. The album reached number two on the UK charts, maintaining a chart residency for 22 weeks, and number 70 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold by the RIAA in late 1990, and it has sold consistently well ever since. The album is popularly regarded as The Smiths' best album. With its unique blend of musical styles (including jangle pop, British Invasion, music hall, rockabilly and punk rock), it quickly became a British sensation and established The Smiths as one of the biggest bands of their era. Both Morrissey and Marr disagree, however, citing its 1987 successor (and unexpectedly final Smiths LP ...

50 years of Bill Shankly (facebook group)

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Bill Shankly to Liverpool Football Club. This group is set up to pay thanks to the man from the Scottish mining town of Glenbuck who took one club from the second division of English football and laid the foundations of what is now the most successful football club in British history. Liverpool and Bill Shankly were made for each other. When they joined forces In December 1959, the club was a slumbering mass of unfulfilled potential, the man a football boss of only moderate success. But Bill had a vision, and when he set eyes on Anfield he knew he had found the setting for his life's great work. The stadium was a mess and the training ground a wasteland, the team mediocre and the bond complacent - but those fans, their spirit and that all-consuming thirst for a football team worthy of the name... ah, now they were really something. The story of Bill's transformation of the Reds has passed into folklore, but what was his secret? How did he do it? Well, to begin with, he was a motivator and psychologist supreme. His players respected him, and some of them might even have feared him a little bit. Eventually, most of them loved him. Above all, no one wanted to let him down. Often outrageous, eternally indomitable, the Ayrshire miner's son built up his men until they felt like giants. Before the 1965 FA Cup Final he told them: 'You are the best. Leeds are honoured to be on the same pitch.' And after watching his side be ...

Bill Shankly 50 years tribute night (Liverpool v Wigan Athletic 2009)

Legends from Liverpool's glorious past paid tribute to legendary manager Bill Shankly during last night's 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic. Players from the 1965 and 1974 FA Cup-winning sides were joined by members of Shankly's family as Anfield fell silent when two Scottish pipers played 'Amazing Grace' to which the Kop attempted to accompany with chants of the great man's name. Representing the team of '65 were Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan, Tommy Lawrence, Gerry Byrne, Tommy Smith, Chris Lawler, Ronnie Moran, Gordon Milne, Willie Stevenson and former captain Ron Yeats. Kevin Keegan, Steve Heighway, Phil Thompson, Brian Hall and the widow of Reds skipper Emlyn Hughes headed up the team of '74. Before kick-off, the Kop held up cards to form a mosaic proclaiming 'Shanks The Legend' as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Scot's arrival at Anfield as Liverpool manager.

Bill Shankly - A tribute to the Legend

A tribute to the Real LFC Legend who made a second-division team into the Premier League & European Power-house. A small compilation of the legend remembering You will never be forgotten at Anfield (Our Home). Some of his famous quotes being:- "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that." On derby day while waiting for Everton to arrive Bill Shankly gave a box of toilet rolls to the Anfield doorman and said: "Give them these when they arrive -- they'll need them!" "My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Had Napoleon had that idea he would have conquered the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in." "I was only in the game for the love of football -- and I wanted to bring back happiness to the people of Liverpool." "When you get the ball, I want you to beat a couple of men and smash the ball into the net, just the same way you used to at Bury," said Shankly. Lindsay replied: "But, boss, that wasn't me, it was Jimmy Kerr." Shankly turned to Bob Paisley and said: "Christ, Bob, we've signed the wrong player." "A football team is like a piano. You need eight men to carry it and three who can play the damn thing." "For a player to be good enough to play for Liverpool, he must be prepared to run through a brick wall for me then ...

Frankly Mr Shankly

Cover by Cursive (originally The Smiths of 1986), off the very, very, early album How Soon is Now?: The Songs of the Smiths. This version's hardly available anywhere, so I figured I'd post it. Lyrics: Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I've held, It pays my way, but it corrodes my soul. I want to leave. You will not miss me. I want to go down in musical history Ohh... Frankly Mr. Shankly, I'm a sickening wreck, I've got the twenty-first century, breathing down my neck. I must move fast, you understand me. I want to go down in celluloid history. Ohh... Fame, Fame, fatal Fame It can play hideous tricks on the brain. But still I'd rather be Famous Than righteous or holy, Oh any day, any day, any day. But sometimes I'd feel more fulfilled Making Chirstmas cards with the mentally ill. I want to live and I want to Love I want to catch something I might be ashamed of Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I've held, It pays my way, but it corrodes my soul. Oh, I didn't realise that you wrote poetry, I didn't realise you wrote such f*?#ing awful poetry But Frankly Mr. Shankly, since you do ask, You are a flatulent pain in the ass. I do not mean to be so rude, Still I must speak Frankly, Mr. Shankly Oh, give us money.
