NASA Video: Shuttle Discovery makes final flight over US

After three decades of space service, NASA's oldest and most traveled shuttle, Discovery, began its new life as a museum relic with one final takeoff. Discovery departed Florida's Kennedy Space Center at daybreak Tuesday aboard a modified jumbo jet bound for Washington, where it will become a Smithsonian exhibit. Riding the Booster with enhanced sound

From the upcoming Special Edition Ascent: Commemorating Space Shuttle DVD/BluRay by NASA/Glenn a movie from the point of view of the Solid Rocket Booster with sound mixing and enhancement done by the folks at Skywalker Sound. The sound is all from the camera microphones and not fake or replaced with foley artist sound. The Skywalker sound folks just helped bring it out and make it more audible.

Ascent - Commemorating Shuttle

Photographic documentation of a Space Shuttle launch plays a critical role in the engineering analysis and evaluation process that takes place during each and every mission. Motion and Still images enable Shuttle engineers to visually identify off-nominal events and conditions requiring corrective action to ensure mission safety and success. This imagery also provides highly inspirational and educational insight to those outside the NASA family. This compilation of film and video presents the best of the best ground-based Shuttle motion imagery from STS-114, STS-117, and STS-124 missions. Rendered in the highest definition possible, this production is a tribute to the dozens of men and women of the Shuttle imaging team and the 30yrs of achievement of the Space Shuttle Program. The video was produced by Matt Melis at the Glenn Research Center. Finally PAO uploaded a 720p version, not sure if we will get 1080p like you wanted, but at least we are making progress. www.youtube.com

Space Shuttle: The complete missions -- by Nature Video

NASA's 30-year Space Transportation System (STS) program came to an end on 21st July 2011. The Space Shuttle fleet delivered the Hubble Space Telescope, the International Space Station, and dozens of satellites, space probes, crew and supplies. Two Shuttles were lost: Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003. The touchdown of Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center marked the end of an era, after 135 missions. This video shows all of them in chronological order. www.nature.com Soundtrack: 'PX3' and 'Retreat! Retreat!' by 65daysofstatic.

Lego Space Shuttle

My name is Raul Oaida (from Romania) and this is my LEGO tribute to the end of the space shuttle era. Proving that although retired, this machine can still fly, albeit in toy form. The launch took place from central Germany (easy flight clearance) and reached a max altitude of 35000m. A 1600g meteo balloon filled with helium was used alongside a GoPro Hero, Spot GPS and of course Lego Space Shuttle model 3367. We launched it on the 31st of December 2011, the equipment was recovered via GPS tracking 240 km SE from a remote area. I wish to thank Steve Sammartino for the opportunity to do this project and the german airtraffic control for the understanding. Final Flight: Space Shuttle Discovery and carrier aircraft back out of mate demate device

NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with space shuttle Discovery on top will fly above sections of the Central Florida coastline and Brevard County on Tuesday, April 17, starting at about 7 am EDT. This will be the final time Discovery will take to the skies over Florida's Space Coast as the spacecraft will be headed to its new home at the Smithsonian in Virginia. The Space Coast flyover is expected to head south from Kennedy down the coastline past Patrick Air Force Base and then head back up north along the coast to Kennedy where it will make a pass over the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and shuttle runway one last time before the SCA heads out of the area. Discovery will be transported to Washington Dulles International Airport in Sterling, Va., and then offloaded and transferred to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., for permanent public display on April 19. Before landing at Dulles on Tuesday, the SCA and Discovery are expected to fly near a variety of landmarks in the metropolitan Washington, DC, area between 10-11 am While travelling north to Dulles, the SCA is expected generally to fly up the coastline in Georgia and the Carolinas before taking a more inland route over Virginia. The exact route and timing of the flight depend on weather and operational constraints. If the flight is postponed for any reason, an additional notice will be released.

Atlantis has blasted off on NASA's last space shuttle launch. The historic liftoff occurred Friday morning, 30 years and three months after the very first shuttle flight. Four astronauts are riding Atlantis to orbit. The shuttle is bound for the International Space Station, making one final supply run. Hundreds of thousands of spectators jammed Cape Canaveral and surrounding towns for the farewell. Kennedy Space Center itself was packed with shuttle workers, astronauts and 45000 invited guests, the maximum allowed. The flight will last 12 days. Weather permitting, Atlantis will return to Kennedy, where it will end up on permanent display. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Rare Amateur Video Of Challenger Shuttle Tragedy

A new amateur video of the 1986 Challenger disaster has surfaced, more than 25 years after the space shuttle broke up mid-flight, killing all seven crew onboard. The footage, revealed on the New Scientist website, is believed to be only the second such video known to exist. It was shot by Bob Karman of Hicksville, New York, whose daughter now works for the magazine. He and his family were on holiday in Florida at the time, and witnessed the tragedy from Orlando airport. On Jan. 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launching from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. It fell in pieces into the Atlantic Ocean. In Karman's home movie, it isn't immediately clear to onlookers that anything has gone wrong. "There it goes... They must be up there," one man can be heard to say, while others wonder what they are seeing and remark, "Look at the little tails coming down there." "After shooting the video, I had a sense that something went wrong but it wasn't until we were on the plane that the pilot confirmed the tragedy," Karman told New Scientist. He said he only recently realized the rarity of what he had captured and made a digital copy of the old VHS tape. Only one other amateur recording of the disaster has ever been made public before now, a four-minute recording discovered in a Florida basement in 2010. At the time, the Guardian described it as "the only amateur film in existence of the world's worst space disaster, recorded in an era before ...

NASA Transports Space Shuttle Enterprise to New York

On Friday, April 27 Enterprise, the first NASA space shuttle was transported atop a 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft from Dulles International Airport, near Washington, DC to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Enterprise eventually will be displayed at New York's Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Though Enterprise, the first space shuttle orbiter never flew in space, it was crucial to the Space Shuttle Program because its series of approach and landing tests in 1977 proved the orbiter could fly in the atmosphere and land like an airplane, except without power -- like a glider. Includes footage of Enterprise on the ground at Dulles and takeoff from Dulles.
