Lamar Queen is an 8th grade math teacher in Los Angeles, his methodology of teaching students includes writing and performing songs to reinforce lessons. When we discovered Lamar he already had a whole text book worth of songs and this video that he made with the help of teachers and students at his school. Although it is not polished, we believe in using art and music to teach children almost anything so we are happy to try and bring his mission of education through the arts to a wider audience. For example, to convert the equation x -- 3y = -12 to y = mx + b form, the first step is to subtract x from both sides to get --3y = -x -- 12. Notice that the x term is positioned before the number on the right side of the equation so that the equation will eventually match up with y = mx + b form. Next, divide both sides by --3 to get y = 1/3 x + 4. Now the problem is in y = mx + b form, with m = 1/3 and b = 4, and the line can be graphed using the slope and y-intercept.

In this lesson, students learn to graph a line using a given point and slope by first plotting the given point, then taking the given slope (rise over run) from the given point, plotting a second point, and connecting the points with a line. Students also learn that the x-intercept is the point where the line crosses the x-axis, and the y-intercept is the point where the line crosses the y-axis. And if the given slope is an integer, such as 5, it can be thought of as 5 so that it can be read as rise over run.
