Glass harp music - The Moldau - Smetana

The Moldau - Vlatva - by B. Smetana played on glass harp by Robert Tiso. The piece contains Smetana's most famous tune. It is an adaptation of the melody La Mantovana, attributed to the Italian renaissance tenor Giuseppe Cenci (also known as Giuseppino), which, in a borrowed Moldovan form, was also the basis for the Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah. The tune also appears in major in an old Czech folk song Kočka leze dírou ("The Cat Crawls Through the Hole") and Hans Eisler used it for his "Song of the Moldau".

Vltava (The Moldau) by Bedrich Smetana -- Vilem Tausky: Conductor

Vltava (The Moldau River) by Bedrich Smetana; Vilem Tausky conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Vltava (also known as Die Moldau in German) is the name of the longest river in Czech Republic and is also the title of the second of the six symphonic poems composed by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884), which are collectively known as Má Vlast (My Homeland). Through his music, Smetana attempted to celebrate Bohemia's history, mythology and landscape. In this tone poem, completed in 1874, Smetana tries to evoke the passage of the Vltava River as it flows from its origin until it merges with the Elbe at the German border. From the composer's notes we learn that the river begins as a single tributary represented by the sound of the flutes. The clarinets join the flutes to represent the second tributary. The violins, oboes, and bassoons unite to play the famous theme based on a Bohemian folk melody that keeps recurring throughout the piece as a way of showing how the river continues to gain strength as it flows. We hear the horns that portray the passage of the river through a forest where a hunt is in progress. We then hear the dance music, part polka - part march, reminding us that the river is flowing past a village where a rustic wedding celebration is taking place. A climax is reached, and subsides as the moon - represented by pianissimo woodwind figures - rises and sparkles in the rippling water. Fluctuating flutes lead to the "dance of the Water Nymphs". Bedřich Smetana - Die Moldau

"Die Moldau" (or The Moldau), was composed between 20 November and 8 December 1874 and was premiered on 4 April 1875. It is the second tone poem which comprises the cycle "Má vlast" (My Country), and it is in the key of E minor. In this piece, Smetana uses tone painting to evoke the sounds of one of Bohemia's great rivers. In his own words: "The composition describes the course of the Vltava, starting from the two small springs, the Cold and Warm Vltava, to the unification of both streams into a single current, the course of the Vltava through woods and meadows, through landscapes where a farmer's wedding is celebrated, the round dance of the mermaids in the night's moonshine: on the nearby rocks loom proud castles, palaces and ruins aloft. The Vltava swirls into the St John's Rapids; then it widens and flows toward Prague, past the Vyšehrad, and then majestically vanishes into the distance, ending at the Elbe". Conductor: Herbert von Karajan & Wiener Philharmoniker

Favorite Composers in Art - Bedrich Smetana

Bedrich Smetana is a Czech composer, teacher, and organist born in 1824. A gifted pianist, he gave his first public performance at the age of 6. He wrote a couple of operas, conducted at Prague's newest operatic theater. He was a unique source of pride for Czechoslovakia, but not without cost. In 1874, by the time he was 50, he was completely deaf. He continued to compose extensively, but a mental collapse in 1884 led to him being put away in a mental institution, and his eventual death. Music is from Smetana's opera "The Bartered Bride."

Bedrich Smetana: Louisa's Polka

Bedřich Smetana (March 2, 1824 -- May 12, 1884) was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style which became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent statehood. He is thus widely regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. When he was young, his father sent him to Prague to study in the autumn of 1839. After his father discovered that the young son was not paying much attention to his school, the father placed him temporarily with his uncle in Nové Město, where he enjoyed a brief romance with his cousin Louisa. He commemorated their passion in Louisa's Polka, Smetana's earliest complete composition that has survived. This is my way to commemorate Smetana's birthday (March 2, 1824) by combining his melodious dance music with some of the great dance clips from Hollywood films. Smetana String Quartet No.1 "Z mého života" 1: Allegro vivo appasionato (Amadeus Quartet)

"From My Life" After the deaf Smetana moved in 1876 from Prague to Jabkenice, he hoped, that his handicap wouldn't be permanent. In autumn of that year he began to compose a new, important work. It was to be the composer's intimate confession, a work depicting in notes the course of his life "... using four instruments speaking among themselves in something like a friendly circle" The first movement is the expression of composer's inclination to the romantic ideals in life and in his music. -Wikipedia
