World record speed set by Queens University Students - Red Bull Soapbox Race in Belfast 2008 Queens student Findhan Strain set the worlds fastest recorded speed in agravity-powered soapbox when he speed tested it on the hill at Stormont Estatein May, 2008 during the week prior to Red Bull Soap Box Race. The vehicle reached atop speed of 45 mph on the 550m steep decline. Red Bull Soap B oxes are limitedto gravity power only and have no propelling or driver assist devices of any kind. Queens University Belfast, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Findhan Strain (formerly from St. Eunans College, Letterkenny) and his team mates James Nixon (Campbell College), Fiona McCrea (Enniskillen Collegiate) and Robbie Stevens (Sullivan Upper) - were students in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering put over 250 hours of work into the design. They also brought their craft to the Red Bull Racing F1 team factory in Milton Keynes,where they received advice from the F1 teams chief de-signer Rob Marshall. Findhan commented, The design is based primarily onaerodynamic considerations and has similarities with thepre-supersonic land-speed record cars. We wanted tominimize the drag, therefore effectively we made the caras small and streamlined as possible, while still being ableto accommodate the driver but we never expected to reachsuch speeds. A member of the PSNI Traffic Division used aspeed gun to record the 45 mph speed.
