Creeping Robot Inspired By Sea Creatures 2011

A "soft" robot inspired by squid and starfish can crawl, undulate, and squeeze under obstacles. Built by a team at Harvard University, this robot has several advantages over those with treads, wheels and rigid parts - which have a limited repertoire of movements and may have trouble navigating difficult terrain. The sea creature-inspired creation was manufactured with soft materials and its motion is driven by compressed air. Professor George Whitesides, Robert Shepherd and their colleagues from Harvard University in Cambridge, US, said the work was inspired by animals such as squid and starfish that lack hard skeletons. The pneumatically-driven robot is built using flexible materials known as "elastomers". Contained within the elastomer layer is a series of chambers that inflate like balloons to enable motion. The robot can adopt different patterns of movement (gaits) during locomotion and its limbs are capable of fluid motions, the Harvard engineers explain. They put their creation through its paces on an obstacle course which, they say, would hinder some rigid, metallic robots. The flexible robot was made to squeeze underneath a glass plate elevated 2cm above the ground in less than a minute by executing a combination of co-ordinated movements. Soft robots are more resistant than more rigid designs to damage from some common hazards in a real-world setting, such as falling on rocks, or receiving bumps and scrapes from other hard objects. But the authors concede that ...

OctArm - a Soft Robotic Manipulator

This video was included in video the Proceedings of the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, Oct. 2007, San Diego, CA. See sites.google.com for related papers. Continuum robots are biologically-inspired by the invertebrate organisms such as octopus arms and elephant trunks. These robots with a backbone-less structure offer a superior performance in unstructured and cluttered environments such as collapsed buildings, unknown geographical terrain, holes and tunnels. This video features OctArm, a continuum robot that demonstrates its capabilities in whole arm manipulation, biologically-inspired maneuvering, and grasping. The video also depicts a 3D graphical model of OctArm in that can be rendered in real-time in MATLAB's Real-Time Workshop.

The Quality of Life Technology Center demonstrated a soft, inflatable robot arm at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show. Soft robots overcome critical safety barriers for human-robot interaction. A soft robot can assist with daily tasks such as bathing and grooming, feeding and dressing much more safely than a hard robot because the inflatable body reduces the risks of injury on unexpected or accidental impact. QoLT's Soft Robot researchers include Siddharth Sanan, Christopher Atkeson, and Michael Ornstein.

My Robot Friend Failure Soft-Core Shadowgate

My Robot Friend - Soft-Core - Waiting - My Robot Friend Remix (feat. Alison Moyet)

www.musicfordriving.com recommends My Robot Friend is no ordinary electro act. This is no ordinary act full-stop. Whereas science fiction (and indeed robots) have always played a part in the presentation and mythology of techno and electronic music, the figure on stage is far from being cliché. Looking like a character from the 80's computer-enhanced film Tron tangled up with a well-lit Christmas tree, My Robot Friend ambles around in front of his audiences powered by a neon-lit 30 pound battery pack. Seeing My Robot Friend live is an unsettling experience. It is instantly apparent that anything could, and probably will, happen, maybe even including a nasty accident. In fact My Robot Friends presence on stage, and the wonderfully subversive music that accompanies it, appears not only dangerously edgy, but outright dangerous too. The truth is no one can be sure whether there is a Wizard of Oz-like human behind the curtain, or if the mechanical man on stage is a carbon-based life form at all. When he hasnt got shards of Roman candle, or indeed confetti, pouring from his metallic anatomy, Howard Robot as he is also known, has been seen in New York. It seems likely that the robot isnt always deactivated after his performances but is probably put to use in a musical production setting. More clues can be derived from listening to the robots creative, other-worldly music. The seeds of a fondness for synth-pop as well as well-crafted rock are evident. Yet this man-machine is ...

Flexible keyboard types its first message

The next generation of electronics, computers, and robots will be all-compliant and hyperelastic. This keypad demonstrates a first step towards soft active materials that can be used for sensing deformation and contact pressure. Here, normal pressure allows the message "VE RI TAS" to be typed using an all-soft, stretchable, flexible and wearable device that is only 700 microns in thickness. The 12-key design mimics the functionality of a mobile phone keypad. Tactile Based Grasping Using The SDH-2 Hand

We demonstrate a "blindfolded" robotic scenario with the 7-DOF Kuka lightweight robot and the 7-DOF Schunk Dexterous Hand. We utilize the impedance control and torque sensing from the robot and the tactile sensing from the hand to pick and place different objects. The user can safely interact with the robot arm due to the soft robotics approach used in the robots control software.

Dielectric elastomer minimum energy structure ring

A minimum energy structure (MES) is a soft mechanism based on the two related design principles of differential growth and transfer of elastic energy. Elastomeric minimum energy structures are created when a thin rubber is stretched and adhered to an inextensible, but pliant planar frame (ie the frame begins flat and can bend, but not stretch). Because the film is stretched, it wants to shrink; being bound to the frame which cannot shrink, the whole system bends into 3D. Similarly we could think about this as the transferring of elastic energy from the film to the frame (ie from stretching energy to bending energy). This process was completed for two identical frames--which bent into pseudo-half circles and were glued together at the edges, forming the rest state shown at the start of the video. The white frame in the video is laser-cut from a 75 micron thick ABS plastic. There are two identical frames adhered at their edges. The black film is 250 micron thick VHB tape from 3M (F9473PC VHB) biaxially prestretched 6x and coated on each side in carbon grease from MG Chemicals. Coating a thin film dielectric elastomer (read: insulating rubber) with electrodes (read: conductive material) creates a dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) (read: compliant capacitor). Applying a voltage across the film causes positive and negative charges to build on opposite sides, creating an electrostatic pressure, causing the film to decrease in thickness and increase in area. When a dielectric ...

The Huggable Social Robot Probo

This social robot embodies a stuffed imaginary animal, providing a soft touch and a huggable appearance. Probo's purpose is to serve as a multidisciplinary research platform for human-robot interaction focused on children. In terms of a social robot, Probo is classified as a social interface supporting non-verbal communication. Probo's social skills are thereby limited to a reactive level. To close the gap with higher levels of interaction, an innovative system for shared control with a human operator is introduced. To facilitate interaction with children, Probo has an identity and corresponding history. Safety is ensured through Probo's soft embodiment and intrinsic safe actuation systems. At the moment a first prototype of the robot has been build (more info: probo.vub.ac.be Probo has already had significant media attention (some examples can be found here: probo.vub.ac.be
