The Bill - Solomon Islands

June 2003 Law and order has completely broken down in the Solomon Islands. Murders go unpunished and the government is being held to ransom by police gunmen. A virtual civil war erupted throughout the islands two years ago when militants from rival ethnic groups took up arms. In a peace deal, militants were made Special Constables but now their money has dried up and gangsters rule. The country is virtually bankrupt. Funded by EU money, a British Policeman has been brought in to restore order after the last Commissioner was murdered. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

SOS in Paradise. Solomon Islands—thinkEQUAL

thinkequal.worldbank.org - The Solomon Islands are among one of the world's most remote areas, with their inhabitants scattered around a large area in the South Pacific. Medical service is hard to come by and in emergencies, transportation to the next hospital is often not available or too expensive. Women often die during childbirth. The World Bank, the EU, AusAID, and IFAD are helping with the upgrade of one of the islands' defunct aid posts; a task that has emotions running high between men and women in the village. It's time to think EQUAL for women and girls.

Law and order in Solomon Islands

The once deeply troubled Solomon Islands police force has faced its sternest test in years and emerged with flying colours. Just over a decade ago, elements of the police took part in a coup. And five years ago the police were overwhelmed when mobs looted and burned Honiara's Chinatown. But now, after years training with the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, RAMSI, the police seem to have turned a corner. 100% Coral Cover, Solomon Islands 2006

I was amazed when I saw this vast area ahead of me completely covered by a thicket of stag horn (Acropora) corals. I was not kicking as I "flew" over this reef carried along by the current. The sound you hear at 58 seconds is me filling my BC so I could stay above the corals while holding my camera just above tops of the branches. I eventually veered to the left to get out of the current before it swept me off the island but I could see that the coral bed extended well beyond where I left off. This was videotaped at an isolated island in the Russell Islands, Solomon Islands, at Kisan. The GPS coordinates are roughly 9-degrees 05.8'S, 159degrees 20.9'E. This was videotaped on October 8, 2006 at about 9:00 am.

Solomon Islands-Lulumo Dance

2011.11.30 50th Anniverary of re-founding of Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan International Culture Night ○1The entrance song is about a typical Melanesian Greeting and Welcome; the dance connotes how the greeting and welcome is conducted. ○2The song that follows after the entrance song is about cutting down a coconut tree during a strong wind to avoid it falling on top of a house. It depicts how to cut down a coconut tree safely during a strong wind to avoid any dangers and destruction if it is blown down by the strong wind, the dance shows the chopping of the coconut tree with an axe from the top downwards, piece by piece, until it reaches the ground. ○3The next song is about the daily difficulties in life one has to endure in-order to survive, one have to work and sweat to make a living. The dance demonstrates that work must be done daily in-order to live ○4The next song is about self-expression of joy and relief after discovering a fountain of water and spreading the good news to others to join in the celebration of the discovery. The dance is an expression of such encounter. ○5The exit song is for farewell and saying goodbye as people parted and paddling back to their respective small isolated islands. Shell money - why it pays. Solomon Islands—thinkEQUAL

thinkequal.worldbank.org - Shell money is traditionally used as the currency of choice in bride price ceremonies and as jewelry all over the South Pacific. The wealth of shell money is exclusively created by women who collect the rare shells, trade them, and manufacture the shell money. With the support of a business database by the World Bank, these women entrepreneurs have the chance to upgrade their largely informal business to a regional trade network. It's time to think EQUAL for women and girls.

pipes Solomon Islands

Stamping tubes (or in this case 'stamping pipes') is a category of instrument in ethnomusicology, which up to now I only knew existed in parts of Africa. What this guy from the Solomon Islands on the western rim of the Pacific achieves, is amazing and sounds remarkably like magogodo xylophone playing from southern Malawi (see SWP 013 which can be bought via www.swp-records.com ). There is so much genius in folk musics, let's try to keep them alive. (thanks to hEuzz and Frans)

Sharzy - Sori Lewa (Official HD Music Video - Solomon Islands Music 2012)

What is it about Sharzy that makes his music so appealing? So attractive? I’m not a music expert in that I know the correct terms and descriptions that’ll enable me to pick at every detail of his album from lyrics to musical arrangements to confidently say that it’s this part mixed with that, or that section that blends with this – that makes Sharzy’s music what it is. His music is something you can listen to on just about any given day, in just about any circumstance. You can listen to any of Sharzy’s albums or songs while sipping on coconut juice, with the ocean breeze caressing your face, sand between your toes whilst the sun beams reflect off a crystal clear ocean or in the night club, when your groggy and tired of trying to keep up with the fast-paced techno beats, then the DJ pops in a Sharzy track and you’re off with the rest of the crowd… racing for a spot on the dance floor all the while lip-syncing in time with the song. Let’s face it… Sharzy and his music are, in a word, Magnetic.

Solomon Islands Adventure - diving, fishing and spearfishing trip

In July 2011 a mate and I travelled to the remote Solomon Islands for 2 weeks of diving, fishing and laying about in the sun. The majority of the trip was spent in the Western Province, a small collection of islands to the west of Guadalcanal. We also stayed in Honiara for a couple of days. The islands are an amazing place to explore, with remote beaches, incredible diving, hot hot tropical sun, great fishing and friendly locals. I hope you like the video; it's kind of a summary of the trip. If anyone has questions about travelling to the Solomon's send me a message, I'd be happy to share my knowledge. All of the footage was shot with a GoPro HD camera with an Eye Of Mine flat lens housing for the underwater shots.
