Soupy

Yeah....Soupy. That's the name of this song recorded by Maggie Thrett in 1965. She's also an actress. You might have seen her on original Star Trek as well as other appearances in the late 60s. So, groove to this funky soul tune and imagine you're in outer space!

At first I was gonna edit this post down to just the song, but I decided to leave the whole segment intact, since I found it interesting watching Soupy stall/ad-lib while someone was apparently cueing-up the record!! I'll always remember Soupy's line, "Be true to your teeth, or they'll be false to you"...

I've Got a Secret - Soupy Sales demonstrates the fine art of pie throwing

I havent seen this clip on any YT sites after searching +"Soupy Sales" +"I've Got a Secret", so I figured I'd do it myself. So in the words of Soupy, "If it turns up on other channels, you seen it here first, folks!". In this clip, Soupy, identified as 'Mr X' plays with his secret, 'In the past 7 years I've had 14000 pies -- Thown in my face!' . Afterwhich he and Gary go center stage to allow Soupy to explain the art of pie throwing. RIP Soupy

Soupy Sales Climbs the Pyramids

I have a friend named Ernie who loves game shows even more than me, if you can believe that. Soupy was a guest on Ernie's radio show once and Ernie took the opportunity to mention how much he enjoyed Soupy's appearances on game shows. Soupy boasted about his prowess with "Pyramid," telling Ernie, "Bob Stewart once told me this...he said according to the records that the show kept, I cost them more money than any other celebrity who appeared on that show." So here's Soupy doing one of the things that he did best...making life a little better for the ordinary folks lucky enough to be his partner that day.

The Soupy Sales Show - opening and closing cues

These are the opening and closing cues to the 1978 version of "The Soupy Sales Show", remade using Soupy's original theme, "Flying Fingers", which I think best reflects the talents of this comic legend. On a side note, the 1965 NYC version of the show used the theme "Dancing Ivories" (in the opening credits only), which had the same motif, but not quite the same tune as "Flying Fingers".

Soupy Sales - "Santa Claus Is Surfin' To Town" (1966)

Soupy Sales (January 8, 1926 -- October 22, 2009) was an American comedian, actor, radio-TV personality and host, and jazz aficionado. He was best known for his local and network children's television show, Lunch with Soupy Sales; a series of comedy sketches frequently ending with Sales receiving a pie in the face, which became his trademark. From 1968 to 1975, he was a regular panelist on the syndicated revival of What's My Line? and appeared on several other TV game shows. During the 1980s Sales hosted his own show on WNBC-AM in New York City. Sales was born Milton Supman, in Franklinton in Franklin County, North Carolina to Irving and Sadie Supman. His father, a dry goods merchant, had immigrated to America from Hungary in 1894. Sales had two siblings, Leonard Supman (deceased) and Jack Supman (born 1921). His was the only Jewish family in the town; Sales joked the local Ku Klux Klan bought the sheets used for their costumes from his father. Sales got his nickname from his family. His older brothers had been nicknamed "Hambone" and "Chicken Bone." Milton was dubbed "Soup Bone," which was later shortened to "Soupy." When he became a disc jockey, he began using the stage name Soupy Hines. After he became established, it was decided that "Hines" was too close to the Heinz soup company, so he chose the Sales, in part after comedian Chic Sale. Sales graduated from Huntington High School in Huntington, West Virginia in 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and ...

Soupy Sales Meets the Rat Pack

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Consciously or not, Soupy Sales was greatly influenced by Ernie Kovacs. While his brand of humor may not have been as cerebral as Ernie's, many of the sight gags appear to have similar inspiration. This clip is not the best representation of a Kovacs-Sales connection, but it probably one of Soupy's most famous. The sketch begins with Soupy, as the restaurant waiter "Pierre" at "The Chez Bippy" (Rowan and Martin obviously ripped off from the Soupman this euphemism for the word "penis" for their comedy series "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In"), greeting a series of guests. The first two are WNEW-AM New York radio personality the late William B. Williams (of "The Make Believe Ballroom" fame) and Soupy's New York sidekick Frank Nastasi (the voices and arms of White Fang, Black Tooth, and Pookie the Lion) dressed in a Little Lord Fauntleroy outfit. During the course of the sketch, singers Trini Lopez, Sammy Davis Jr., and none other than Frank Sinatra make an appearance. For the "Italian dressing" gag, Soupy brings into camera view the late New York City restauranteur, and Sinatra crony, the late Jilly Rizzo. By the end, everyone, including the Chairman of the Board, gets pied. I just caught the You Tube posting of outtakes from this sketch on the YT site of Ira "TV DAYS.com" Gallen. You can catch it at www.youtube.com . While watching it, I was able to recognize the maitre d' as WNEW-AM radio personality the late Ted Brown.

Soupy Sales - Archive Interview Excerpt

Soupy Sales (1926-2009) was interviewed for one hour at the Friars Club in New York, NY. Sales talked about breaking into television in 1950 at local station WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, with The Soupy Soda Show, a teenage dance show. He talked about other local markets where he worked including Clevelands WXEL-TV where his show Soups On provided him the opportunity for getting the first pie in his face— which would become his trademark gag. Sales talked about his several year run with WXYZ-TV Detroits Lunch with Soupy Sales, a childrens show, which also had an adult following. Sales described the series in detail including the look of the set and the characters who appeared (including lion puppet Pookie and dog puppet White Fang, whose great white hairy arm was all that was seen). Sales described his network break, with a replacement series at ABC in the mid-50s. He talked about his work as host/ performer on The Soupy Sales Show that ran on ABC, first originating in Detroit, then in Los Angeles. He also described his shows second primetime incarnation on ABC in 1962. Sales detailed the celebrities who appeared on his show, which famously included Frank Sinatra. Finally, Sales described reviving his series at WNEW in New York (and talked about the incident which got him suspended— when he told children to send money to him care of the station). The interview was conducted by Charles Salzberg on July 24, 2002.

Soupy Sales Dies

THIS IS MY TRIBUTE TO SOUPY SALES!! Sales is best known for his daily children's television show, Lunch with Soupy Sales. The show was originally called 12 O'Clock Comics, and was later known as The Soupy Sales Show. Improvised and slapstick in nature, Lunch with Soupy Sales was a rapid-fire stream of comedy sketches, gags, and puns, almost all of which resulted in Sales receiving a pie in the face, which became his trademark. Sales developed pie-throwing into an art form: straight to the face, on top of the head, a pie to both ears from behind, moving into a stationary pie, and countless other variations. He claimed that he and his visitors had been hit by more than 20000 pies during his career. He recounted a time when a young fan mistakenly threw a frozen pie at his neck and he "dropped like a pile of bricks --In 1960, Soupy moved to the ABC-TV Studios in Los Angeles, California. ABC dropped the show from the network schedule in March 1961, but it continued as a local program until January 1962. The show briefly went back on the ABC network as a late night fill-in for the Steve Allen Show in 1962 but was canceled after three months. All of the puppets on the show during its Los Angeles run were also operated by Clyde Adler. In 1964, Sales found a new weekday home at WNEW-TV in New York City. This version was seen locally until September 1966, and 260 episodes were syndicated by Screen Gems to local stations outside the New York market during the 1965-1966 season. This ...

The kid shows were piped in like utilities: you turned on the set just about any time a kid would want to watch TV, and there these guys were. For many of us, the great Sandy Becker WAS New York TV. Fred Scott read the news following his kids show; once he forgot who he was talking to and said, "This is the Channel 5 News, Uncle Fred Scott reporting."
