Space Shuttle: The complete missions -- by Nature Video

NASA's 30-year Space Transportation System (STS) program came to an end on 21st July 2011. The Space Shuttle fleet delivered the Hubble Space Telescope, the International Space Station, and dozens of satellites, space probes, crew and supplies. Two Shuttles were lost: Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003. The touchdown of Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center marked the end of an era, after 135 missions. This video shows all of them in chronological order. www.nature.com Soundtrack: 'PX3' and 'Retreat! Retreat!' by 65daysofstatic.

Lego Space Shuttle

My name is Raul Oaida (from Romania) and this is my LEGO tribute to the end of the space shuttle era. Proving that although retired, this machine can still fly, albeit in toy form. The launch took place from central Germany (easy flight clearance) and reached a max altitude of 35000m. A 1600g meteo balloon filled with helium was used alongside a GoPro Hero, Spot GPS and of course Lego Space Shuttle model 3367. We launched it on the 31st of December 2011, the equipment was recovered via GPS tracking 240 km SE from a remote area. I wish to thank Steve Sammartino for the opportunity to do this project and the german airtraffic control for the understanding. Final Flight: Space Shuttle Discovery and carrier aircraft back out of mate demate device

NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with space shuttle Discovery on top will fly above sections of the Central Florida coastline and Brevard County on Tuesday, April 17, starting at about 7 am EDT. This will be the final time Discovery will take to the skies over Florida's Space Coast as the spacecraft will be headed to its new home at the Smithsonian in Virginia. The Space Coast flyover is expected to head south from Kennedy down the coastline past Patrick Air Force Base and then head back up north along the coast to Kennedy where it will make a pass over the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and shuttle runway one last time before the SCA heads out of the area. Discovery will be transported to Washington Dulles International Airport in Sterling, Va., and then offloaded and transferred to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., for permanent public display on April 19. Before landing at Dulles on Tuesday, the SCA and Discovery are expected to fly near a variety of landmarks in the metropolitan Washington, DC, area between 10-11 am While travelling north to Dulles, the SCA is expected generally to fly up the coastline in Georgia and the Carolinas before taking a more inland route over Virginia. The exact route and timing of the flight depend on weather and operational constraints. If the flight is postponed for any reason, an additional notice will be released.

Space shuttle Atlantis final launch: NASA video of last take-off

Atlantis has blasted off on NASA's last space shuttle launch. The historic liftoff occurred Friday morning, 30 years and three months after the very first shuttle flight. Four astronauts are riding Atlantis to orbit. The shuttle is bound for the International Space Station, making one final supply run. Hundreds of thousands of spectators jammed Cape Canaveral and surrounding towns for the farewell. Kennedy Space Center itself was packed with shuttle workers, astronauts and 45000 invited guests, the maximum allowed. The flight will last 12 days. Weather permitting, Atlantis will return to Kennedy, where it will end up on permanent display. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Shuttle Discovery moved from its processing hangar, Orbiter Processing Facility-1 (OPF-1) and parked while Atlantis was moved out of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to take Discovery's place in OPF-1. The two shuttles passed each other while en route to their new locations. The move was scheduled to be the final time that Discovery will roll out of an OPF. Discovery will remain temporarily in the VAB until mid-April. Discovery is set to be transported atop a modified 747 jet to Dulles International Airport in Virginia on April 17. It then will be moved on April 19 to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles for permanent public display. In OPF-1, Atlantis will undergo preparations for public display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and is scheduled to roll over to the complex in November. The visitor complex plans to open its display of Atlantis in July 2013.

Atlantis is being prepared for public display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in 2013.
Space Shuttle

The Space Shuttle was a partially reuseable launch system and orbital spacecraft operated by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for human spaceflight missions from 1981 to 2011. The system combined rocket launch, orbital spacecraft, and re-entry spaceplane with modular add-ons. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981 leading to operational flights beginning in 1982, all launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The system was retired from service in 2011 after 135 missions; on July 8, 2011, with Space Shuttle Atlantis performing that 135th launch - the final launch of the three-decade Shuttle program. The program ended after Atlantis landed at the Kennedy Space Center on July 21, 2011. Major missions included launching numerous satellites and interplanetary probes,[2] conducting space science experiments, and servicing and construction of space stations. Enterprise was a prototype orbiter used for atmospheric testing during development in the 1970s, and lacked engines and heat shield. Five space-worthy orbiters were built—two were destroyed in accidents and the others have been retired. It was used for orbital space missions by NASA, the US Department of Defense, the European Space Agency, Japan, and Germany. The United States funded Space Transportation System (STS) development and Shuttle operations except for Spacelab D1 and D2 — sponsored by West Germany and reunified Germany respectively. In addition, SL-J was partially ...
