Spain Police attack on Student protestors in Valencia 2012 - Censured in European Media

Police have attacked protestors at a student demonstration in the Spanish city of Valencia and made several arrests. The clashes broke out on Monday after students protesting against education budget cuts held a demonstration outside a school and came up against police barricades. Witnesses at the scene said that baton-wielding police in helmets and body armor charged the protestors, beating and dragging people along the ground. Spanish media outlets reported that up to 21 people, including several minors, were arrested in the incident. However, Valencia regional police chief Antonio Moreno told reporters that police used "proportionate physical force." A Valencia police spokesman said that arrests had been made but could not confirm how many. "There were demonstrators acting aggressively and so there were arrests," the spokesman said, adding that police acted to "restore order." Last week, clashes also broke out in Valencia during student demonstrations against government austerity measures. On Monday, Spain's opposition issued a statement demanding that the interior minister and chief of police explain the "heavy-handed repression" of last week's demonstrations. Battered by the global financial downturn, the Spanish economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008. Analysts say Spain's economy is expected to enter into a new recession in the first two quarters of 2012.

www.presstv.com Recent clashes in the Western Sahara have highlighted a 35-year-old dispute over a mineral rich area in the northwest of Africa. In 1975, Morocco's king Hassan occupied Western Sahara when former colonial power, Spain, withdrew. There has however been a ceasefire and an agreement to hold a referendum since 1991. Indeed UN sponsored talks were just about to resume when the protesters were attacked by Moroccan security forces. This week's Africa Today revisits the largely forgotten Western Sahara and asks how Morocco has managed to continue its domination over a sovereign nation for so long.

Spain Battles Illegal Muslim Immigration / España Batallas Inmigración Musulmana Ilegal

The bodies are anonymous, rotting in the shallows of the Straits of Gibraltar. The fortunate ones are dragged out for a hasty burial. They are Africans trying to make it to Europe, betting their lives on a nine-mile ride, thousands losing that bet each year. Spain used to be an open door for illegal immigrants. An estimated one-quarter of all smuggled immigrants into Europe came through the Southern coast of Spain, most setting off from Morocco. The sticks and stones of frustrated border guards had little effect against a rising tide of human traffic. But all that changed on March 11. Most of the terrorists who killed 190 people on commuter trains in Madrid were Moroccan. Suddenly, the immigrant problem was a security problem. Under pressure at home and from other European nations, rubber batons at the border were replaced by speedboats but success, so far, is limited. "The numbers are down here by 50 percent," said Lt. David Oliva of the Spanish Border Guard. "But the smugglers are just moving to other parts of the coast." Although only nine miles separate Africa from Europe, that stretch contains some of the most dangerous currents in the world. Now, some people in Africa are so desperate, they are ready to pay $1000 a head just to get across, and they'll take their chances on anything that floats. Seventy-five people from the Moroccan village of Tangier drowned trying to cross the waters last month. When FOX News approached families of the victims, they started to cry ...

Spain pursues Israeli war criminals

Israel is bracing itself for a series of war crimes cases in European courts against its politicians and soldiers. Several European countries exercise "universal jurisdiction". This means they reserve the right to pursue the most serious cases - such as torture or genocide - even if they do not involve their nationals or took place outside their borders. Spain is the latest country to investigate Israeli officials, as Roshan Muhammed Salih in Madrid reports.

Gaza Child Used for Propaganda by Media In Spain

In an unprecedented wave of xenophobic, anti-Morocco, reporting by the press in Spain, on the Western Sahara conflict, a new milestone has occurred. A photo of a child victim from Gaza was presented as a [Western Sahara] "sahrawi" child, a " victim of Moroccan Violence" during the latest clashes between Moroccan Security forces and protesters. The crude propaganda gambit was circulated by Spain's elite media sources, such as the main News agency, EFE, the largest daily newspaper in the country, el Pais. and most other media outlets both from the left to the neo-fascist right. Spanish television stations, took the matter further and produced news programs, complete with eye witnesses that claimed to know this particular child and spoke at length, with teary eyes, (see Video) about the child victim, his siblings and parents, all supposed victims of violence by Moroccan Law enforcement services, in Western Sahara. However, Research by Moroccan bloggers showed that the images were not from Western Sahara. On June 21, 2006 an Israeli missile struck a house in the Gaza Strip, which killed a woman and wounded several other people, including two small children who were treated at a local hospital. These image were released by leading Spanish media in their propaganda war to mislead public opinion on the conflict. Spanish Metal Workers Strike Over Pay

Angry steel workers filled the streets of Vigo in northeastern Spain. Across town armed riot police prepare to head them off. Protests such as this have been taking place across the region for almost a week. Unions representing around 30000 metal workers are fighting for better wages. But on Tuesday talks with management reached deadlock. It's been a hard time for steel workers in Spain in general. Earlier this month ArcelorMittal cut back its Spanish operations. The global recession has taken its toll on the construction industry. And Spain's unemployment rate is currently the highest in Europe. On Wednesday, the Spanish government signed a deal with Arcelor allowing temporary layoffs among it's 12000 Spanish workers. They say the move is necessary to combat weak demand and soft prices, by temporarily cutting production. Similar deals have been struck elsewhere in Europe. At Thursday's clashes, a TV cameraman was injured, after a firecracker hit him in the leg. The workers say they'll continue to protest unless an agreement is reached.
