My relatively unconventional, but simple design for a toy (but still useful) HF spectrum analyser using a VHF super-regenerative detector as a logarithmic IF. www.vk2zay.net Fits in an Altoids tin, runs from 9 volts, and pulls 21 mA. Front-end is a JFET cascode mixer, the LO a JFET Hartley. Log IF is self-quenched common-gate JFET oscillator. Uses LM555 IC with PNP current source and LED modified threshold point for the linear sawtooth VCO tuning/X sweep voltage generation. Another (7)555 implements a frequency to voltage converter that resolves the log detector's quench signal. An LM358 op-amp level shifts and amplifies the output of the F2V converter to something more convenient for a CRO Y channel input. Sweeps 22 MHz chunks of spectrum to beyond 55 MHz (limited largely by front-end LPF, IF is around 150 MHz), and gives a resolution bandwidth of about 250 kHz. Log range is better than 50 dB and quite linear. Frequency sweep is a bit compressed at the bottom end because of VCO varicap non-linearity. Tolerates 10 dBm signals, but IP3 is not expected to be very good as mixer stands only 2 mA.

If you are fortunate enough to have experienced the sound of a vacuum tube amplifier with CD wav, reel or vinyl input source; then you probably realize what you are missing with MP3 audio. This device shows high frequency loss of music by MP3. This 16F877A Microchip PIC powered spectrum analyzer finally works in both dot and bar mode. Response time and accuracy has been optimized over the previous version. All 33 I/O lines of the 40 pin PIC are utilized, many with multi-mode. That is, any of the logic outputs are switched to logic inputs, tri-state and analog inputs on demand. So one I/O pin can become output, digital input and analog input. If software/hardware designed correctly, one logic I/O can be equivalent of 3 or even four I/O. No external switching logic required. My favorite digital caliper is connected with alligator clip to the touch sensor input to toggle between modes. Any metal object will work.

Here is my most recent work, definitely the most impressive. Microprocessors are all written in Arduino and the laptop is running Processing. This is actually three different pieces of code running on a total of 8 processors: the 'slave' code running each 8x8 LED matrices' backpack, the 'master' code running on a dedicated arduino which sends out data to the 6 backpacks, and some 'analyzer' code running on the laptop which does the playback and FFT frequency analysis which is sent to the 'master.' This was a bear beyond belief to debug. The 'slave' code has been on a stable build for a while, so at least I had to debug on only two processors, except on two software platforms. Normally, Arduino debugging is done via printing to the serial interface, but I had to use the serial to communicate with the computer for the FFT data. Luckily Processing runs it's own 'print' box, so I mostly did server side debugging. Learned a lot more about OOP (object oriented programming) and event based code than I thought I would need, but I guess that's all for the better. I curse modern languages (ie Processing) for no longer supporting unsigned variables. Do you have any idea how much of a headache and how much wasted time there was because my variables from PC to Arduino weren't consistent? and since when does mapping from 0 to X return negative numbers? It was mostly stuff like that that held me up. The eagle eared (and those who've followed my other videos) will be able to figure out <b>...</b>

This video shows the unique key-up characteristics of two different hand-held radios. The radios are a pair of multi-band HTs that are designed for the amateur/ham radio market. One is a Yaesu FT-470 Dual-Band (2m/440MHz), and the other is a Kenwood TH-F6A Tri-Bander (2m/220/440). The key-up, or transmitter turn-on characteristics are captured and analyzed on a real-time spectrum analyzer (Tektronix RSA5106A). It's quite surprising to see how differently these two transmitters behave, and how the transient characteristics of the transmitter turning on create very unique signatures that would make identification of these devices very easy simply by capturing their output over the air.

I was always curious to know what the RF signatures of the different 2.4 GHz RC radio implementation look like. I've done some research and read discussions on how they work/perform but never really "saw" them in action - until now. Using my trustworthy IBM Thinkpad I set up a 2.4 GHz spectrum analyzer system designed to monitor the 2.4 GHz bandwidth for WIFI applications. Turns out the system works very well for RC radio systems as well ! I am not an electrical engineer but I do understand RF theory and have experience working with radio transmitters and antennas (ahh the DXing days...). Having said that, these are what I observed about the differences in the modules. a) channel coverage b) tendencies of the peaks to be more concentrated on section/s of the band c) number of well defined peaks d) shape of the peaks - base vs height e) power output and relative presence of ambient noise I am no expert and cannot determine which is the good, better or best module based on what I observed. What I can say is that all the radio/modules I used performed very well in the field. Thanks for dropping by and fly safe!

This video takes a very brief look at the basic noise floor and sweep speed performance of the spectrum analyzer portion of the new Tektronix MDO4000 Mixed Domain Oscilloscope to a basic entry level swept spectrum analyzer. Both analyzers are set to the same set of settings, and the sweep speed / spectrum update rate are compared. The integrated spectrum analyzer in the MDO is intended to be comparable to the performance of conventional entry level class spectrum analyzers similar to the Agilent ESA-L E4411B that is used in this video for comparison. The Tek MDO is shown to be considerably faster at narrow resolution BW, while also featuring a noise floor that is more than 10dB lower. The Tektronix MDO is a new class of instrument - it is a 4-channel oscilloscope which also includes 16 digital channels (mini logic analyzer), and one dedicated RF channel (spectrum analyzer).
