Pat Boone - Speedy Gonzales (Original Stereo)

This novelty tune written by Buddy Kaye, Ethel Lee and David Hess would be Pat Boone's last recording to enter the pop Top 40, peaking at #6 during the summer of 1962. Pat's version is actually a cover of a recording by David Dante a year earlier with Mel Blanc's voice (the actual voice of Speedy Gonzales in the Warner Brothers cartoon) added for additional effect. Robin Ward is the female voice you hear singing "la, la, la...".

With his trademark white buck shoes, perfectly combed hair and gleaming smile, Boone was the very essence of wholesome American values, and at a time when the rise of rock & roll was viewed as a sign of the apocalypse, he made the music appear safe and non-threatening, earning some 38 Top 40 hits in the process. It's fitting that his achievements rank closest to those of Presley; after all, both claimed the sound of the black R&B culture for their own, in the process straddling both sides of the color line and popularizing a form of music which otherwise might never have gained widespread acceptance. Of course, while Elvis -- with his flashy suits, swiveling hips and suggestive leer -- remained persona non grata throughout many corners of mainstream America, Boone was embraced by teens and parents alike; his music polished rock's rough edges away, making songs like "Tutti Frutti" and "Ain't That a Shame" palatable to white audiences raised on the soothing pop traditions of a vanishing era. When I listen to a Spanish Tune I can feel my blood gushing through my veins .... hahaha ... lol (Spanish-guitar-strumming intro) Spoken: It was a moonlit night in old Mexico. Speedy Gonzalez-Here Today ,Gone Tamale (1959)

Sylvester is guarding a ship full of cheese. Among the ways Speedy defeats him: when trapped in a butterfly net, he runs Sylvester into a railing; he lures Sylvester into a Limburger storeroom and locks him in (Sylvester emerges, blue); Sylvester lures Speedy, hoping to smash him with a mallet, but smashes his own hand; Sylvester rigs a hair-trigger guillotine on the main entry, but Speedy comes up the mooring line -- then lures Sylvester out past the guillotine, which shaves his back; Sylvester blocks the gangplank except for a pipe leading into his mouth -- Speedy runs in to the tip of Sylvester's tail, then out the other end. Finally, the mice are dancing, and Sylvester decides, if you can't beat them, join them: He puts on some mouse ears and joins the dance.
