Anthony Quinton on Spinoza and Leibniz: Section 1

The ideas of rationalist philosophers Baruch Spinoza and Gottfried Leibniz are examined in this program by philosophy Anthony Quinton. Spinoza favors a pantheistic God who has matter and mind as two attributes, and who is the ultimate substance and explanation of the world. Leibniz sees the real world as consisting of an infinity of things purely spiritual, where everything, including space, is a phenomenon—a by-product of areal world with an infinite array of spiritual centers. Both philosophers construct a world that is very different form what the average person perceives, and both reject Cartesian duality.

Spinoza (1632-1677)

www.philosophybites.com Baruch de Spinoza was among the most important of the post-Cartesian philosophers who flourished in the second half of the 17th century. He made significant contributions in virtually every area of philosophy, and his writings reveal the influence of such divergent sources as Stoicism, Jewish Rationalism, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Descartes, and a variety of heterodox religious thinkers of his day. For this reason he is difficult to categorize, though he is usually counted, along with Descartes and Leibniz, as one of the three major Rationalists. Given Spinoza's devaluation of sense perception as a means of acquiring knowledge, his description of a purely intellectual form of cognition, and his idealization of geometry as a model for philosophy, this categorization is fair. But it should not blind us to the eclecticism of his pursuits, nor to the striking originality of his thought. Among philosophers, Spinoza is best known for his Ethics, a monumental work that presents an ethical vision unfolding out of a monistic metaphysics in which God and Nature are identified. God is no longer the transcendent creator of the universe who rules it via providence, but Nature itself, understood as an infinite, necessary, and fully deterministic system of which humans are a part. Humans find happiness only through a rational understanding of this system and their place within it. On account of this and the many other provocative positions he advocates, Spinoza has ...

Spinoza - The Apostle of Reason (Espinosa - O Apóstolo Da Razão)

An excellent and quite accurate film on Spinoza. The scenes showing Spinoza reading/writing letters is very accurate. They picked two of the funniest of his letters, especially the one on the existence of male apparitions and ghosts. Those writing to Spinoza were Albert Hurgh and Hugo Boxel. I highly recommend that people read Spinoza's letters. There is some excellent philosophy in his correspondence, and lots of laughs. Steven Nadler talk on Spinoza - Part 1 of 2

Steven Nadler, Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, gives a talk on Baruch Spinoza at Beyond Belief 2006, touching on Spinoza's conception of God and morality. Spinoza heavily influenced Einstein's beliefs about God and ethics. He said: 'It seems to me that the idea of a personal God is an anthropomorphic concept which I cannot take seriously. I feel also not able to imagine some will or goal outside the human sphere. My views are near to those of Spinoza: admiration for the beauty of and belief in the logical simplicity of the order and harmony which we can grasp humbly and only imperfectly. I believe that we have to content ourselves with our imperfect knowledge and understanding and treat values and moral obligations as a purely human problem — the most important of all human problems.' Baruch Spinoza (Hebrew: ברוך שפינוזה‎ Baruch Shpinoza, Portuguese: Bento de Espinosa, Latin: Benedictus de Spinoza) and later Benedict Spinoza (November 24, 1632 -- February 21, 1677) was a Portuguese descendant Dutch Jewish philosopher. Revealing considerable scientific aptitude, the breadth and importance of Spinoza's work was not fully realized until years after his death. Today, he is considered one of the great rationalists of the 17th-century philosophy, laying the groundwork for the 18th century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism. By virtue of his magnum opus, the posthumous Ethics, in which he opposed Descartes' mind--body dualism, Spinoza is considered to be one of Western philosophy's most important philosophers. Philosopher and historian Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said of all contemporary philosophers, "You are either a Spinozist or not a philosopher at all." Spinoza was raised in the Dutch Jewish community, where he received an excellent Jewish education from a number of leading contemporary rabbis. He emerged extremely well-versed in the Hebrew Bible and other Jewish texts. In time, however, he developed highly controversial ideas regarding the authenticity of the Hebrew Bible and the nature of the Divine, which it is believed led Jewish ...

Spinoza (1632-1677) is now remembered mainly as a philosopher. But he was also deeply concerned with religious and theological questions. In this video, Professor Agata Bielik-Robson argues that he has to be seen as presenting a particular view of the divine and as representative of a distinctive spirituality.

Borges: Spinoza's Sonnet

English translations: 1 (literal). The translucent hands of the Jew Work in the penumbra, crystals & the evening, dying, is dread & chill. (Evenings to evenings are equal.) The hands & space of hyacinth Waning in the confines of the Ghetto Almost do not exist for the man so quiet Who is dreaming a clear labyrinth. He's not perturbed by fame, that reflection Of dreams in the dream of another mirror, Nor by the timorous love of maidens. Free from metaphor & myth He works a hard crystal: the Infinite Map of That which totals His stars. 2. The Jew's hands, translucent in the dusk, polish the lenses time and again. The dying afternoon is fear, is cold, and all afternoons are the same. The hands and the hyacinth-blue air that whitens at the Ghetto edges do not quite exist for this silent man who conjures up a clear labyrinth— undisturbed by fame, that reflection of dreams in the dream of another mirror, nor by maidens' timid love. Free of metaphor and myth, he grinds a stubborn crystal: the infinite map of the One who is all His stars. "In that sonnet, I refer specifically to the philosopher Spinoza. He is polishing crystal lenses and is polishing a rather vast crystal philosophy of the universe. I think we might consider those tasks parallel. Spinoza is polishing his lenses, Spinoza is polishing vast diamonds, his ethics."

Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, AKA Theologico-Political Treatise Written by the philosopher Baruch Spinoza, the Theologico-Political Treatise or Tractatus Theologico-Politicus was published anonymously in 1670. It is an early criticism of religious intolerance and a defense of secular government. In particular, it was a preemptive defense of his later work, Ethics (published posthumously in 1677), for which Spinoza anticipated harsh criticism. It was written in New Latin. In the treatise, Spinoza put forth his most systematic critique of Judaism, and all organized religion in general. To Spinoza, all "revealed" religion had to be analyzed on the basis of reason, not simply blind faith. Baruch Spinoza (Hebrew: ברוך שפינוזה‎ Baruch Shpinoza, Portuguese: Bento de Espinosa, Latin: Benedictus de Spinoza) and later Benedict Spinoza (November 24, 1632 -- February 21, 1677) was a Portuguese descendant Dutch Jewish philosopher.
